Chapter 16 - The Beginning of the Spark

Kaizen emerged from the fusion chamber after seven full days of continuous dissolution. He no longer walked like a man, but like a shadow moving with mechanical precision. His body had grown thinner, his bones sharp beneath pale skin, and his eyes had sunk deep into dark sockets. Yet they no longer carried any trace of the past. He looked at the world as if it were a vast machine—and he was merely a small gear within it.

Severus led him to a different hall, less cold and more spacious. Its walls were dark gray, and at the center stood a round table with three chairs. On the table lay an old map of a barony, along with several papers covered in fine writing.

"Sit," Severus said.

Kaizen sat. His movements were efficient, precise—every motion stripped of excess.

Severus stood before him, studying him with a new kind of interest.

"You have passed the fusion stage with relative success. You did not completely collapse—that is rare. Now you enter the stage of the Spark. Here begins true observation. You are no longer dust, nor an empty function. You are now a spark. You will learn to see patterns, understand mechanisms, and carry out simple tasks that require thought—not just physical endurance."

He pointed to the map.

"This is the Barony of Silk, ruled by Duchess Isolde. She is skilled in economic betrayal and shadow trade. Your first task outside this place is to observe one of her trade caravans. You will go with a small team. You will not speak. You will not be seen. You will write a precise report on everything you observe: number of guards, type of goods, methods of protection, any unusual signals, any individual who seems out of place. Every detail matters. The report must be cold, objective—free of emotion."

Kaizen looked at the map and memorized it quickly. He did not ask why. He did not ask about risk. He simply said, in a calm, dry voice:

"When do I begin?"

"At dawn tomorrow. You will be given plain clothing, a small dagger, and paper and pencil. You will be under Elias's command. He will oversee the mission. Remember: you are not there to fight. You are there to see. Seeing is the first step of the Spark."

At dawn the next day, Kaizen left with a team of four: Elias, Jett (a former mercenary turned Spark), Dorian (a silent observer), and himself. They wore plain gray travel clothes that drew no attention. They rode thin but resilient horses and headed toward the main trade road between the Barony of Silk and the Barony of Iron.

The journey was long and rough. Throughout it, Kaizen spoke only when spoken to. He observed everything: the gait of the horses, the change in soil color, the distant sounds of birds, even the breathing patterns of his companions. His mind worked with mechanical coldness—recording, storing, connecting.

They reached their observation point after two and a half days. It was a small hill covered with low trees overlooking the main road. They hid there and waited.

On the third day, the caravan passed.

It consisted of eight large wagons, surrounded by twelve armed guards. The guards wore light armor and carried short swords and composite bows. The fourth wagon carried sealed wooden crates marked with a red eagle stamp. Kaizen noticed that the guards paid particular attention to that wagon. He noticed one guard was more tense than the others—gripping his sword too tightly, frequently looking behind him. He also noted the caravan moved slower than usual, as if carrying something unusually heavy.

Kaizen recorded everything precisely:

Number of guards: 12

Weapons: short swords and composite bows

Fourth wagon: crates sealed with red eagle mark, heavily guarded

Guard #7: tense, frequently looking back, excessive grip on weapon

Caravan speed: approximately 20% slower than expected

On the second night of observation, something unexpected happened. A single man from the caravan approached their position in search of water—the same nervous guard. The team remained hidden, but he came dangerously close. Elias signaled Kaizen to remain completely silent.

Kaizen stood in the darkness, gripping his dagger—but did not act immediately. He let the man approach within a few steps. Then, with precise cold efficiency, he struck the back of the man's head with the dagger's handle—knocking him unconscious without killing him. The team dragged him back and took a small amount of water and the message hidden In his boot.

Kaizen wrote in his report:

"Guard #7 carried a concealed message addressed to 'The Eagle.' Content: 'The deal is delayed due to increased surveillance.'"

After six days, they returned to the gray structure. Kaizen handed the report to Severus. Severus read it slowly, then looked up.

"Excellent. You noticed details others missed. The message is significant. This means the Barony of Silk is planning something larger than we assumed. You are now a true Spark. But remember: a spark dies easily if it becomes visible."

Severus studied him for a moment before adding:

"In the coming weeks, you will take on more complex tasks. You will learn to infiltrate networks, to listen without being heard, to understand the conflicts between baronies as if they were pieces on a chessboard. You will begin to see the Contract of Ash more clearly. But understand this: every piece of knowledge will cost you more. You will lose more of the man you once were."

Kaizen did not respond. He simply nodded.

That night, he lay on his bed, staring at the ceiling. He no longer tried to recall memories. He no longer felt emptiness as something negative. Emptiness had become a tool. It allowed him to focus. It allowed him to see clearly.

He felt something small ignite within his chest. Not a burning fire—but a cold, precise, steady spark. The spark of observation. The spark of understanding.

He knew he was no longer the slave of the mine.

No longer the man who struck Draven.

He was now a spark in a vast darkness.

And the darkness was beginning to reveal Its true shape.

The Contract of Ash was waiting.
