Chapter 9 - Chapter 9:Into the Trial

The morning arrived earlier than usual.

Not because the sun rose faster, but because the outer sect had already begun to stir before dawn. What had once been a quiet routine was now filled with movement, anticipation, and an undercurrent of tension that could be felt even in the air.

Today was different.

Today was the day of the trial.

Lin Chen stepped out of his room as the first light spread across the courtyard. The corridor that had once been filled with whispers now fell silent the moment he appeared. Conversations paused, eyes shifted, and though no one spoke, the awareness was unmistakable.

They were watching him.

Not openly.

Not boldly.

But carefully.

Lin Chen ignored it.

He walked forward at a steady pace, neither hurried nor slow, his expression calm and unreadable. The token rested within his sleeve, its presence a constant reminder of what lay ahead.

The outer sect trial.

A stage.

A selection.

And perhaps—

A test he had no choice but to pass.

The gathering point was located at the edge of the outer sect, a wide, open platform surrounded by stone pillars. By the time Lin Chen arrived, dozens of disciples had already gathered, forming small groups as they spoke in low voices.

The atmosphere was different from the usual.

No casual laughter.

No idle chatter.

Only tension.

Everyone here understood the importance of this trial. It wasn't just about resources or ranking—it was about opportunity. Those who performed well would gain attention, access, and a path forward.

Those who failed…

Would remain where they were.

Or worse.

Lin Chen stepped onto the platform.

And immediately, he felt it.

Attention.

Not scattered.

Focused.

Several gazes turned toward him at once, sharper and more direct than anything he had experienced before.

He didn't need to look to know.

These were not ordinary disciples.

These were the ones who stood at the top of the outer sect.

The ones who had nothing to prove—

Except to each other.

"...So that's him."

A voice broke the silence.

It wasn't loud, but it carried clearly.

Lin Chen turned slightly.

A young man stood a short distance away, arms crossed, his posture relaxed but his gaze anything but. There was a faint hint of amusement in his eyes, as though he had already formed an opinion.

"You're Lin Chen, right?" the man continued.

Lin Chen looked at him.

"Yes."

The answer was simple.

Direct.

The man smiled faintly. "He doesn't look like much."

A few people nearby chuckled softly, though none of them fully relaxed.

Because they were watching too.

Waiting.

Lin Chen didn't respond.

He had no interest in meaningless words.

The man seemed slightly disappointed by the lack of reaction, but he didn't press further. Instead, he tilted his head slightly, as if reassessing.

"Name's Han Wei," he said. "Remember it."

Lin Chen didn't answer.

But he didn't look away either.

For a brief moment, the air between them tightened.

Then—

Another presence cut through it.

"Enough."

The voice was calm, yet carried an authority that immediately silenced the area.

An elder stepped forward onto the platform.

His robes were darker than the instructors', his presence heavier, more grounded. The moment he appeared, even the more confident disciples straightened slightly.

"Since everyone is here," the elder said, his gaze sweeping across the crowd, "we will begin."

No unnecessary explanation.

No delay.

That alone told them everything.

This trial would not be simple.

The elder raised a hand.

The ground beneath the platform began to tremble slightly.

A low hum filled the air as a formation activated, lines of faint light spreading outward before converging at the center. The space distorted subtly, as if something beyond it was being revealed.

"The trial ground lies beyond this formation," the elder continued. "Inside, you will compete for resources."

A pause.

"Everything you obtain—belongs to you."

A longer pause.

"But remember…"

His gaze hardened slightly.

"Only those who endure will leave."

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Intentional.

No one asked questions.

Because none were needed.

This was not a test of rules.

It was a test of survival.

One by one, the disciples stepped forward.

No one hesitated for long.

Han Wei moved first among the top group, his earlier casual demeanor gone. Without another word, he stepped into the formation and disappeared.

Others followed.

Some confidently.

Some cautiously.

But all of them went.

Lin Chen watched for a moment.

Then—

He stepped forward as well.

The moment he entered the formation, the world shifted.

Space twisted briefly, and the ground beneath him changed.

When his vision cleared, he was no longer on the platform.

He stood within a forest.

Dense.

Quiet.

The air carried a faint, unfamiliar pressure, different from the outside world. It was richer, but also heavier, as if every breath came with weight.

Lin Chen remained still.

Listening.

Feeling.

The forest was not silent.

It was watching.

After a moment, he moved.

Not quickly.

Not recklessly.

Each step was measured, controlled.

Because he understood—

This was no longer a place of observation.

This was where everything changed.

A sudden sound broke the stillness.

Movement.

Fast.

From the left.

Lin Chen reacted instantly, shifting his body as a shadow burst from the trees.

A beast.

Low to the ground, its body tense with aggression, its eyes fixed on him with instinctive hostility.

It didn't hesitate.

It attacked.

Lin Chen stepped aside, his movement precise as the creature passed him by. In the same motion, his hand struck downward, targeting the point where its movement would end.

The impact landed.

Clean.

The beast collapsed almost instantly, its body sliding across the ground before going still.

Silence returned.

Lin Chen looked down at it briefly.

Not surprised.

Not impressed.

Just—

Noted.

Then, faintly—

He felt it.

A small shift within him.

The system responding.

Not as strongly as when defeating a cultivator—

But present.

He understood immediately.

Everything here—

Was a resource.

He lifted his gaze.

The forest stretched endlessly ahead.

Unknown.

Unpredictable.

And filled with opportunity.

A faint smile appeared on his lips.

"Good."

Then—

He moved forward.

Deeper.
