Chapter 36 - Chapter 36: The Hidden Blade

The night was thick with mist, curling through the palace corridors like a living thing. Liora's footsteps were quiet, deliberate, echoing faintly against the marble floors. After Selene's reckless display at the feast, the Princess knew her rival's desperation had reached a dangerous peak. Selene would no longer rely on manipulation alone—she would strike directly.

Arion fell in step beside her, his presence steady, his hand occasionally brushing hers in quiet reassurance. "I've instructed the guards to double patrols," he murmured. "But this… feels different. Selene isn't merely challenging you anymore. She wants to wound, personally."

Liora's gaze hardened. "Then we must anticipate every possible move. Every corridor, every chamber, every shadow… Selene will find nothing she can exploit if we are ready. She may have cunning, but I have foresight."

The Crown Princess had been tipped off by one of her spies: Selene had arranged a secret meeting with a rogue faction of palace guards. Their aim was subtle but lethal—an ambush that would humiliate Liora and undermine her authority. But Liora had already planned a counter. She would attend, but on her own terms.

The moonlight spilled across the deserted gallery where the meeting was to take place. Liora and Arion arrived together, silent as shadows. There was no hesitation in Liora's steps; every detail had been accounted for.

Selene emerged from the darkness, her face a mask of controlled elegance. "Princess Valerien," she said sweetly, "I wondered if you might join us. A private discussion… for the sake of clarity."

Liora's eyes met hers, steady and unflinching. "Clarity is best served in full light," she said. "And in truth."

Selene signaled, and a few guards stepped forward—blades glinting. But Liora had already anticipated this. Arion moved with silent precision, disarming two guards before they could reach her. Liora, calm as ever, drew the attention of the remaining faction with subtle gestures and commanding words.

"You see," Liora said softly, "every attempt to harm me only reveals your desperation. You act with anger, not strategy. That is your weakness, Selene."

Selene's eyes flared, but she faltered as Liora's loyal allies emerged from hidden positions, neutralizing the rogue faction without violence. The ambush was foiled before it began, and Selene's carefully orchestrated trap collapsed in the open night.

Arion reached for Liora, his voice low, a mixture of relief and admiration. "You anticipated everything. Every shadow, every threat. Even Selene's boldest attempt… failed because of you."

Liora allowed herself a faint, private smile. "Preparation and foresight," she murmured. "The only way to survive—and thrive—in a palace of whispers and shadows."

He held her hand a moment longer, their fingers entwining naturally. "And if danger rises again," he said, voice husky, "I will be there, by your side. Always."

Her gaze softened, a rare flicker of warmth. "Then remain, Arion. This palace is my battlefield, but it is not without allies. You… are my most trusted one."

The moonlight danced on the fountains as the night air grew still. Selene's ambition and desperation had escalated dangerously, yet Liora remained calm, composed, and several steps ahead. The game was far from over, but tonight, the shadow of betrayal had been met with unyielding strategy—and the quiet promise of shared strength with Arion.
