Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: The Poisoned Gift

The first rays of dawn cast pale light over the palace, yet the corridors already buzzed with whispers. Liora moved through the halls with quiet precision, her mind sharp and alert. After Selene's repeated public failures, the rival princess had grown desperate. Liora knew that the next move would not be subtle—it would be personal.

Eveline approached, her expression tight with worry. "Milady… Selene has arranged for a private delivery, claiming it is a gift for you from a foreign noble. Rumors suggest it may contain a trap—poison, or worse, a message meant to disgrace you."

Liora's eyes narrowed. "Then we will uncover the truth before it touches my hands. No gift is innocent if delivered with deceit, and no enemy is subtle when desperate."

Arion, arriving at her side, placed a reassuring hand on hers. "I will remain with you," he said quietly. "Nothing reaches you that I do not see first."

The gift arrived as a small, ornate box, its surface etched with delicate patterns of silver and gold. Selene's mark was evident in the craftsmanship, a signature meant to tempt, charm, and intimidate all at once.

Liora examined the box carefully, tracing the patterns with gloved fingers. "Every detail," she murmured, "is designed to provoke curiosity… to exploit hesitation. But curiosity without caution is dangerous."

Arion leaned close, his voice low. "Shall we open it together?"

She met his gaze, a flicker of warmth in her otherwise composed expression. "Together," she agreed.

Inside the box was a folded letter, accompanied by a small, delicate dagger. The letter was written in flowing script, each word carefully chosen.

"Princess Valerien,You have grown bold and confident, but beware—the game you play is not without cost. Those who rise too quickly may fall even faster. Trust is fragile… loyalty fleeting. Consider this a warning."

The dagger gleamed under the light—a threat, elegant yet lethal. Selene had escalated her tactics. No longer content with public manipulation, she had moved to intimidation and fear.

Liora's gaze hardened, her mind already racing. "Selene believes that fear can control me. But fear is only effective if one allows it to be. This… is merely another opportunity to reveal her desperation."

Arion's hand brushed hers once more. "Then we face it together," he said, voice steady. "Whatever her intentions, we will turn them to our advantage."

By evening, Liora had arranged a subtle counter. The letter was discreetly circulated among trusted nobles, its contents framed not as a threat to Liora, but as evidence of Selene's increasing recklessness. The dagger, carefully displayed, became a symbol of the danger posed by unchecked ambition.

Selene's plot, meant to intimidate and destabilize, instead reinforced Liora's reputation as both vigilant and unshakable. Her courtly allies rallied closer, their loyalty deepened by her calm response and strategic brilliance.

As the moon rose over the palace gardens, Liora and Arion walked quietly among the fountains. The tension between them was palpable, a mixture of admiration, trust, and quiet intimacy. Selene's next move would surely be bolder, more personal, and more dangerous—but tonight, Liora had once again proven that every shadow could be anticipated, every threat countered, and every challenge met with poise, strategy, and unwavering strength.
