Chapter 37 - The Journey Beyond

The world felt different this morning. As we packed our small bags for the journey toward the northern ruins, I could feel the weight of my brothers eyes following me. Ammar was sitting by the window, his strength almost fully back, but his face was clouded with a worry he couldn't hide. He knew that Omar and I were going to find the source of the voices, and he knew that our peaceful days in the village were behind us. I walked over to him and squeezed his shoulder. You stay here and keep the fountain running, Ammar, I said softly. We will be back before the next full moon. He didn't say a word; he just took my hand and pressed it to his cheek for a long moment, a silent goodbye that broke my heart.

Omar was waiting for me at the edge of the valley, his pack slung over his shoulder and his knife cleaned and ready. He didn't look like a scavenger anymore; he looked like a man who had a purpose beyond just finding his next meal. We started walking through the long grass, leaving the safety of the houses behind. For hours, we didn't speak, the only sound being the crunch of the dry earth under our boots and the distant hum of the wind. I kept touching the spot behind my ear, wondering if the chip was already sending signals to the station, telling them that Subject 014 was on the move. Every shadow looked like a drone, and every gust of wind sounded like a command.

When the sun reached its highest point, Omar stopped by a cluster of dead trees. He sat down and pulled out a small piece of dried bread, breaking it in half and handing the larger piece to me. You are thinking about it again, aren't you? he asked, his voice gentle but firm. I took the bread and nodded, looking back at the tiny speck that was our village. I feel like I'm leading the danger straight to us, Omar. Maybe I should have just gone alone. Omar moved closer, sitting so near that I could feel the warmth of his shoulder against mine. We already talked about this, Sarah. You are not a weapon, and you are not a project. You are the girl who taught me that the ruins are not the end of the world. If we find out who did this to you, we find out how to stop them once and for all.

He reached out and took my hand, his fingers intertwining with mine. I felt the rough texture of his skin and the solid strength in his grip, and the fear in my chest began to fade just a little bit. We are going to find the truth, Sarah, and then we are going to come back and build a life where no one ever has to look over their shoulder again. I looked at him and finally managed a real smile, the first one since I discovered the secret. You always know what to say, I whispered. He smiled back, a rare, genuine expression that reached his eyes. That's because I've spent a long time watching you be the strongest person I've ever known. It's my turn to be the strong one now. We stood up together and continued our walk, heading deeper into the unknown, two souls walking through the dust, ready to face the ghosts of the past for a chance at a real future.
