Chapter 39 - The Steel Echo

The morning sun didn't bring warmth; it only revealed the skeletal remains of a city that once reached for the clouds. We were deep in the outskirts of the northern sector now, walking through streets where the asphalt had cracked and swallowed entire cars. Every step felt like we were walking over the bones of a giant. Omar was silent, his hand never leaving the hilt of his blade, his eyes scanning the shattered windows of the skyscrapers above us. I tried to keep my focus, but the air here felt different—heavy with a strange, metallic scent that made my lungs burn. It was as if the world itself was still trying to scrub away the memory of the people who used to live here.

Suddenly, a high-pitched whine pierced the silence. It wasn't the sound of the wind or the groan of rusting metal. It was an electronic shriek that made the chip behind my ear vibrate so violently I fell to my knees. Sarah! Omar shouted, rushing to my side. What is it? I couldn't answer. My vision was swimming with lines of blue code, and the cold voice from the station was suddenly back, clearer than ever before. Distance from base detected. Security protocol initiated. Returning Subject 014 to containment. I looked up and saw it—a drone, but not like the ones we saw in the village. This one was larger, a silent silver triangle floating just above the ruins of a collapsed hotel.

It didn't fire. It didn't attack. It just hovered there, its red lens blinking in a rhythmic pattern that seemed to pulse in time with my own heartbeat. Omar stood in front of me, his body a shield, but I knew his knife was useless against something that could fly and see through walls. Run, Sarah! he hissed, pulling me to my feet. I can't leave you! I cried, my head spinning with the signals the drone was sending directly into my mind. You are not leaving me, he said, his voice calm even though I could see his hands shaking. We are going into the tunnels. If it can't see us, it can't track the signal. Move!

We scrambled into the dark entrance of a subway station, the smell of damp earth and old rot hitting us instantly. We ran down the stairs, our boots echoing like thunder in the underground silence. The whining sound outside faded as we went deeper, and the vibration behind my ear finally stopped, leaving me gasping for air against a cold concrete wall. We waited in the darkness for what felt like hours, listening to the metallic hum of the drone circling the entrance above. Omar was breathing hard, his hand resting on my shoulder to keep me steady. They found us, I whispered, my voice echoing in the tunnel. Even here, they found me. Omar pulled me into a brief, tight embrace. They found 014, Sarah. But they have no idea that Omar is here too. We are not going back.
