It was two o'clock in the morning. The shimmering lights of Tokyo filtered through the window of the apartment, casting long shadows across the floor, but sleep was the last thing on Aika's mind. She lay on her bed, staring fixedly at the ceiling, while her mind replayed old memories like a film strip.
The Echo of Kyoto
Aika had always been this way—stubborn, hardworking, and crystal clear about her dreams. From junior high to middle school, the title of 'Rank 1' had been permanently attached to her name. In her old school back in Kyoto, whenever the results were announced, everyone already knew who would be at the top.
"Aika, you're a machine!" her friends used to laugh. But Aika wasn't a machine; she was simply in love with her position. She craved the peace that came with being at the very top of the class. She had a kind heart, knew how to value friendship, and her interest in boys or romance was practically zero. Her real 'crush' was the 'A+' grade written on her report cards.
Moving from the quiet streets of Kyoto to the bustling heart of Tokyo was a massive decision. She had come here for higher studies, determined to build a successful career. Her parents sent her allowance every month, and she shared a small but cozy apartment with her childhood best friend, Hana. Everything was perfect... until she stepped foot into Hakuho High School.
The Reality Check
"Renji Hayasaka..." Aika whispered the name into the darkness of her room.
Until today, she had never accepted defeat from anyone. But in this new elite school in Tokyo, her 'Guroor'—her pride—had been shattered. A boy who spent half the class sleeping, who barely spoke to anyone, had surpassed her effortlessly. Aika felt as if her very identity was being stripped away. She was disappointed, even a little hurt, but then she clenched her fists tight.
"No! I didn't come to Tokyo to lose. In the next test, I'll show him what the Kyoto topper is made of!"
Fueled by this sudden burst of motivation, she finally rolled over and drifted into a restless sleep.
The Next Day: Observation and Strategy
The next morning, Aika's mission officially began. She was 'Analyzing' Renji. Everywhere he went, Aika followed a short distance behind, keeping a watchful eye. She noticed that Renji possessed a strange, magnetic 'aura' throughout the school. Girls stole glances at him, and boys looked at him with envy, but Renji seemed entirely oblivious to it all.
He was the definition of an introvert. His only friend appeared to be Takeo—a loud, cheerful guy who seemed to be the only person capable of talking to Renji without hesitation. To make matters worse, Renji wasn't just a genius in academics; he was naturally athletic too. During Physical Education, he made a perfect basket without even trying, yet his expression remained as cold and indifferent as ever.
"How does this guy's brain even work?" Aika wondered, frustrated.
The Library Incident
By evening, the school library was bathed in a quiet, golden light. The only sound was the faint rustling of pages. Renji, as usual, was tucked away in a corner seat, deeply engrossed in a thick, intimidating book.
Aika was hiding behind a nearby bookshelf, peeking through the gaps between the books. She was desperate to see what 'secret' book he was reading that made him such a genius.
Suddenly, someone slapped her shoulder hard from behind. "BOO!"
"AHHH!" A small scream escaped Aika's lips, but she instantly clamped her hand over her mouth. It was Hana, standing there with a mischievous, wide grin.
"What's the matter, Aika-chan? You've been following Renji like a ghost all day. What are your intentions?" Hana teased, nudging her with her elbow.
"Shut up, Hana! I was just... I was just checking what book he's reading. I'm doing research!" Aika whispered frantically, her face turning pink.
"Really? Research or stalking?" Hana winked.
Aika glared at her and leaned in further to get a better look at Renji's desk. In her nervousness, her hand accidentally brushed against a heavy, old hardcover book sitting on the edge of the shelf.
THUD!
The book hit the floor, the sound echoing like a gunshot in the silent library. Renji instantly turned his head. Aika's heart skipped a beat. She and Hana were caught red-handed.
Renji adjusted his glasses slightly, looking at them with a questioning, stoic gaze. "Do you two need something from me?" his voice was flat, devoid of any emotion.
Aika's face turned as red as a ripe tomato. Panicking, she grabbed Hana's arm and pushed her forward. "N-No! Not me, actually... Her! Yeah, Hana wanted to ask you something!"
Hana's eyes widened in total shock. "Me? When did I say—"
Aika squeezed Hana's hand hard, signaling her to be quiet, and turned to leave. "Yes, she had something to ask, but she forgot! Let's go, Hana!"
Renji stood up from his seat. "If you two want to sit here and study, feel free. I'm finished anyway; I was just about to leave."
Aika stopped in her tracks. Her ego flared up again. She turned around, looking at Renji with a slight pout and defiant eyes. Tilting her chin up arrogantly, she snapped, "No! I have no desire to sit in your seat. You keep your thick books and study. I'm leaving!"
With a huff, Aika turned on her heel and stomped out of the library. Hana stood there, baffled. She turned to Renji, looking embarrassed, and gave a shy, apologetic smile. "S-Sorry, Renji-kun! Bye-bye!" Then, she went scurrying after Aika.
Renji stood there for a moment, watching them leave. He shook his head slightly and muttered to himself, "What a strange girl..." Then, he sat back down and vanished into the world of his book once more.
The Next Day: The Announcement
The following day started like any other. During the morning lecture, Renji sat in his usual window seat, staring outside. A few birds were chirping on a branch nearby. Looking at them, Renji muttered under his breath, "What was the name of that bird? I saw it in a book this morning..."
Right at the desk next to him, Aika was busy taking meticulous notes. Her focus was entirely on her work, but her ears were tuned sharply toward Renji.
Suddenly, the teacher entered the room, and the class fell silent.
"Attention, class! I have an important announcement," the teacher said, writing 'MONDAY' in large letters on the board. "Next Monday, you will all be taking a major Surprise Test. This test will count toward your final grades, so make sure you come fully prepared. All the best!"
The moment she heard the word 'Test,' Aika's pen stopped. Her heart began to race. 'A Test!' This was it—her chance. She felt a mix of nervous anxiety and fierce motivation.
Just then, a voice came from the seat next to her.
"I remember now!" Renji said, his voice slightly louder than usual as he stared out the window.
Aika looked at him in sheer disbelief. Her mind began to whirl. She assumed Renji was talking about the test—that he already remembered the entire syllabus or that he was effortlessly ready for the challenge. She glared at him, thinking, "How overconfident can this guy be? He's already reacting to the test like it's nothing?"
But Renji was still just staring at the birds. He hadn't even heard the teacher's announcement. He had simply finally remembered the name of the 'Bird' he had been searching for all morning.
Aika sat there, fuming and staring at him, while Renji remained lost in his own little world. The battle for next Monday had been set, and only one of them knew the stakes
