Chapter 4 - Chapter 4. The Shadow behind the Genius

The lunchtime rush at Tokyo High School was as chaotic as ever. The cafeteria was a symphony of clattering trays, the savory aroma of steaming ramen, and the incessant chatter of hundreds of students. But in a secluded corner table, the atmosphere was far from festive.

Aika snatched a piece of sushi from her bento box with a ferocity that suggested she was settling a blood feud. She chewed it slowly, her eyes narrowed, as if the rice and fish were merely a proxy for her true target. Across from her, Hana, her best friend, watched her with a mixture of concern and exhaustion.

"Aika... honestly? You're starting to scare me," Hana said, letting out a long, heavy sigh. "Are you really going to keep chasing after Renji like this? The entire school is talking about nothing but the two of you. Ever since you challenged him at the school gate, some people are praising your guts... but others? They're making fun of you."

Aika swallowed her sushi and replied in a sharp, defensive tone, "Let them talk! I don't give a damn what they say!"

Hana leaned forward, lowering her voice to a cautious whisper. "But look at the facts, Aika. You've come in second to him three times now. If you place second again in this math test... that's the fourth time in a row. It hurts me to see people mocking you. Maybe... maybe it's time to just accept it and move on."

Hana's words hit a nerve. Aika's eyes flared with a sudden, intense fire. She bolted upright in her seat, slamming her palms onto the table with a loud thud that caused a few nearby students to jump. She leaned in so close to Hana that their foreheads almost touched, her voice trembling with sheer determination.

"Listen to me, Hana! I don't care what those people think! I don't care if I come in second four times... or forty times! I will never give up. Just once... if I can break the ego of that 'Cold Prince' just once, every single one of them will shut their mouths forever. Just you wait and watch. I'll make sure Renji is the one crying in a corner after he tastes the bitterness of second place! I will grind that arrogance of his into the dust!"

Hana pulled back, stunned by the raw intensity in Aika's gaze. "You've completely lost it. But seriously... where does he get that brain from? He sleeps through half the classes. I'm convinced he must be going to some high-level secret tuition or something. Nobody can be that much of a genius without some extra help. It's logically impossible!"

"Tuition...?" Aika froze. The word echoed in her mind like a bolt of lightning hitting a bell. A slow, predatory light began to glow in her eyes as if she had just stumbled upon a forbidden secret.

Hana gulped nervously. "W-W-What's wrong? Did I say something weird? Why are you staring at me like that?"

Without a single word, Aika snapped her bento box shut, slung her bag over her shoulder, and stood up. A wicked, triumphant smirk played on her lips. "No, Hana... you just said the smartest thing you've ever said in your life! My lunch is done. See ya!"

Hana shouted after her, but Aika had already vanished into the crowd. Hana shook her head, muttering to herself, "That girl is a disaster waiting to happen. I dread to think what she's planning now."

Evening (Outside the School Gates):

The final school bell had rung long ago, and the students were drifting away toward their respective homes. Renji, as usual, walked out of the school gates with his bag slung lazily over one shoulder. He let out a quiet yawn, looking as bored and indifferent as ever, and began his leisurely stroll along the sidewalk, lost in his own thoughts.

He was completely unaware that a very "strange" figure was tailing him from a distance.

This person was wearing a large, brown detective cap pulled low over their forehead. A thick black mask covered the lower half of their face, and a pair of dark sunglasses shielded their eyes. To top it off, despite the mild weather, they were wrapped in an oversized trench coat that reached down to their knees, effectively concealing their entire frame.

This 'Detective' was eerily silent. They didn't speak, didn't mutter, and barely made a sound. Whenever Renji accelerated, the detective mirrored his pace with light, stealthy footsteps. Whenever Renji turned a corner, the detective would immediately dive behind a wall or a mailbox, peeking out with exaggerated caution.

Renji turned into a quiet, narrow alleyway. The detective paused at the corner, waited a beat, and then crept forward with the precision of a professional spy on a high-stakes mission. The tension in the air was palpable.

The two of them continued deeper into the residential district. Renji's gait remained steady and rhythmic, showing no sign that he suspected a shadow was following his every move.

Suddenly, without any warning, Renji came to a dead halt.

The detective, caught off guard by the sudden stop, panicked! Fearing they would be spotted, the figure scrambled frantically to the side to find cover. There was a cold, iron utility pole standing right there.

But in the rush and the blur of the oversized sunglasses, the detective completely miscalculated the distance.

THWACK!

Their forehead collided violently with the solid iron pole.

"Ouchhh! Dammit..."

A soft, pained cry escaped the detective's lips. It was unmistakably the voice of a girl—high-pitched and filled with genuine hurt.

The force of the impact knocked the sunglasses right off the detective's face. The figure doubled over, clutching their throbbing forehead in agony. In the chaos, the mask slipped down to their chin, and the brown cap tumbled to the pavement.

As the fading golden light of the sunset hit the alleyway, the detective's identity was finally revealed. With wide, teary eyes and a face as red as a ripe tomato, the mystery person stood exposed.

It was none other than our very own Aika.

She stood there, frozen against the pole, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She scrambled to pick up her glasses, her eyes darting toward Renji's back, praying with every fiber of her being that he hadn't turned around to see her spectacular failure.
