Chapter 7 - 7

He started walking again. Faster this time.

The sound of his own footsteps grew louder, more defined against the pavement. The rhythm of it filled the space where everything else had been.

Step. Step. Step.

Predictable.

Controlled.

He focused on that instead.

On the pattern. The consistency.

On something that didn't change.

A figure appeared ahead, stepping into the light from between two houses.

Adrian slowed again.

It was just someone walking. Head down, hands in their pockets, moving at their own pace.

Normal.

Nothing unusual.

Still, his attention locked in without him meaning it to.

The way they moved. The rhythm of their steps. Slight limp in the left leg. A pause at the curb before crossing.

Details.

Small things.

Easy to miss.

Easy to learn.

Adrian's eyes followed them as they passed under the next streetlight.

Then into shadow.

Then gone.

He stood there for a moment longer than necessary.

Something about it stayed with him.

Not the person.

The pattern.

The predictability of it.

The way everything lined up if you just… watched long enough.

Adrian tilted his head slightly, like he was trying to hear something just out of reach.

The night stretched around him.

Wide. Open. Quiet.

Not empty.

Never empty.

Just… waiting.

He turned back the way he came. Not because he was tired. Just because it felt like the right time.

By the time he reached his street again, the house lights were lower. Fewer cars. Less movement.

The world settling.

Adrian stepped back onto his porch and paused.

The silence here felt different than inside.

Less heavy.

Less… expectant.

He stood there for a second, listening.

To the wind.

To the distant hum of the city.

To the way everything fit together without asking anything from him.

Then he went inside.

************************************************

Adrian noticed it the next morning. Not right away. Not when he woke up, or when he got dressed, or even when he stepped outside.

Everything felt the same at first—dull, predictable, heavy in that familiar way.

But something was… quieter.

Not around him.

Inside.

The usual noise—the replaying voices, the constant low pressure sitting in the back of his thoughts—it was still there.

Just… farther away.

Like it had been turned down.

He walked to school the same way he always did. Same streets. Same turns.

But he wasn't bracing himself the way he usually did.

That was new.

The hallway felt louder than usual.

Or maybe he was just noticing it more.

Lockers slammed. Someone shouted across the hall. A burst of laughter cut through everything, sharp and sudden.

Adrian kept walking.

A shoulder brushed his.

Then another.

"Watch it."

He didn't stumble this time.

Didn't react at all.

He just kept moving.

That was new too.

At his locker, nothing fell out when he opened it.

No note. No paper.

For a second, he just stood there, staring at the empty space like something was missing.

Then he realized—They hadn't gotten to him yet.

The thought settled in strangely.

Not relief.

Something else.

Like waiting for something you knew was coming.

"Hey."

The voice came from behind him again.

Same one from yesterday.

Adrian closed his locker slowly before turning.

The guy leaned against the lockers, arms crossed. Two others nearby, not even trying to hide that they were watching.

"You almost said something yesterday," he said.

Not mocking this time.

Observing.

Adrian didn't answer.

Didn't look away either.

That was different.

The guy tilted his head slightly. "So you do talk."

A small smirk pulled at the corner of his mouth. "You just don't want to."

Silence stretched between them.

Adrian could feel it—the expectation, the waiting. That same pressure from before.

But it didn't hit the same way.

It didn't get under his skin as quickly.

It just… sat there.

The guy pushed off the lockers.

"Alright," he said. "Keep your secrets."

He walked past, shoulder brushing Adrian's again.

Harder this time.

Adrian didn't move.

Didn't tense.

Didn't react.

He just stood there until the footsteps faded.
