Cherreads

Chapter 9 - 9

After school, the air felt colder than the day before.

Or maybe he just noticed it more.

He stood outside the building for a moment, watching people move past him in clusters.

Same patterns.

Same rhythms.

He could see it now.

Who walked with who. Who talked the most. Who followed. Who led.

It was all there.

Obvious.

He just hadn't been looking at it like this before.

That night, he didn't hesitate at the door.

He didn't pause.

He didn't think about it.

He just grabbed his jacket—and left.

Adrian didn't remember deciding to go out.

One moment he was in his room, the dim light from the street slipping through the blinds. The next, he was halfway down the stairs, jacket already on.

It felt automatic.

Like something his body had learned faster than his mind.

Outside, the night settled around him easier than before.

Not unfamiliar.

Not something he had to adjust to.

It fit.

The air was colder tonight, carrying that same edge—but it didn't bite the way it had yesterday. If anything, it felt… clearer.

Quieter.

Adrian stepped off the porch and started walking.

The streets weren't empty.

They never were.

But they felt like they belonged to something else now. Something slower. Something that didn't rush or crowd or press in on you from every side.

A car passed.

Headlights washed over him, then moved on.

No one looked.

No one slowed.

Adrian kept walking.

He didn't take the same route as before.

Not exactly.

His turns came a little later. His pace a little more deliberate. Less wandering. More… choosing.

He noticed that.

Didn't question it.

Up ahead, a figure moved along the sidewalk.

Not far. Not close.

Just there.

Adrian's gaze fixed without him meaning it to.

Same as before.

Pattern.

Rhythm.

The way their arms moved. The slight turn of their head every few steps, like they were checking something behind them without fully committing to it.

Aware.

But not enough.

Adrian's pace slowed.

Then matched.

Not consciously.

It just… happened.

The distance between them stayed the same.

Step for step.

Turn for turn.

The sound of their footsteps blended with his, just offset enough that it created something new.

A rhythm that didn't belong to either of them alone.

Adrian focused on that.

On how easy it was to follow it.

They passed under a streetlight.

For a second, everything sharpened.

Their outline clearer. The space between them defined.

Then shadow again.

Gone.

Still there.

Adrian's fingers flexed slightly at his sides.

Not tense.

Not relaxed.

Just… aware.

He could feel his heartbeat, steady but present. Not racing. Not out of control.

Controlled.

That was new.

The thought came back.

Clearer this time.

Closer.

'What would it take to stop it?'

Not the laughter.

Not the voices.

This.

The movement. The pattern. The sound.

Right in front of him.

Adrian's steps slowed.

The distance shortened—just slightly.

Enough to notice.

Enough that it changed something.

The figure ahead shifted again, a small glance over their shoulder.

Adrian looked away instantly.

Not panicked.

Just… adjusting.

The moment passed.

They kept walking.

So did he.

His mind didn't race.

That was the part that stood out the most.

No flood of thoughts. No panic. No spiral of second-guessing.

Just one idea.

Held steady.

Examined.

Turned over slowly, like it had weight to it.

Like it mattered.

'What would it take?'
