Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: Breaking Point

Chapter 16: Breaking Point

The fragile peace in Kuoh Town was beginning to fracture.

Over the next few days, the Emperor kept the peerage on a tight, disciplined schedule. Training sessions grew more rigorous, with a clear emphasis on coordination against holy energy. Kiba spent extra hours refining his demonic swords to counter light-based attacks, while Akeno practiced combining her lightning with defensive barriers that could blunt holy strikes. Asia focused on expanding her healing range and efficiency, and Koneko worked on raw power output that could disrupt enemy formations.

The Emperor oversaw everything with calm, unrelenting authority. He rarely raised his voice, yet his presence alone pushed every member to perform at a higher level. His interactions with each of them were deliberate — never rushed, always calculated to build loyalty through consistent demonstration of control and vision.

One afternoon, during a private sparring session with Akeno, the tension between them reached a new depth. Lightning crackled around her as she pressed an aggressive but controlled assault. The Emperor met each strike with precise boosts from the gauntlet, his movements economical and dominant. When he countered with a crimson energy wave that forced her back, Akeno landed gracefully, breathing heavier than usual.

She lowered her hands, violet eyes locked on his. "Issei-kun… every time we train like this, I feel the difference more clearly. You don't just fight — you decide how the fight will go. It's intoxicating."

The Emperor stepped closer, his voice low and commanding. "Power without direction is wasted, Akeno. You have immense talent. But talent alone is not enough. I need to know that when the real battle comes, your loyalty will not waver."

Akeno's cheeks flushed slightly. She took a small step forward, closing some of the distance. "I've been thinking about that a lot lately. My past… my bloodline… I've always kept parts of myself hidden. But with you, I find myself wanting to let those walls down. Not all at once. But steadily. If you'll have me."

The Emperor studied her for a long moment, letting the silence add weight. The Charm Theft had been working consistently, creating a slow but genuine pull. "Then continue showing me through your actions. When your commitment matches your power, I will accept it fully. Until then, train harder. Prove you belong at my side."

Akeno nodded, a soft, determined smile forming. "I will. Thank you for not rushing me… and for making me want to earn it."

Their moment ended there, another layer added to the slow-building bond.

Rias watched such interactions with quiet pride. In their private evenings, she and the Emperor spoke at length about the empire they were constructing. Their connection had grown deeper and more intimate, not through haste, but through shared ambition and his steady dominance. Rias had fully embraced her role as the first queen, her loyalty absolute.

Meanwhile, Ravel Phenex's visits had become a near-daily occurrence. She no longer pretended the meetings were purely academic. During one extended discussion, she openly shared sensitive political insights about how the Phenex clan and other houses might react if Kokabiel succeeded in provoking war.

"You've changed the board," she admitted quietly, looking at the Emperor with a mix of admiration and hesitation. "My brother's defeat was humiliating, but it also exposed weaknesses in how we've operated. I… find myself thinking about what it would be like to be part of something that actually shapes outcomes instead of just reacting to them."

The Emperor regarded her with measured interest. "Then keep thinking, Ravel. Intelligence like yours is rare. When you're ready to step beyond observation, there will be a place for you."

Ravel blushed but did not deny the possibility. Her fate thread continued to advance steadily.

Raynare provided regular updates from the fallen angel side. Dohnaseek was weakening further, offering more fragments of information under pressure. Kokabiel's agents were growing impatient, and signs pointed to an imminent move on the Excalibur fragments.

The breaking point arrived sooner than expected.

On the fifth day after the Church agents' arrival, Kiba returned from reconnaissance with urgent news. "Xenovia and Irina are moving toward an old warehouse district on the eastern edge of town. They've detected a strong fallen angel presence there. It looks like Kokabiel's agents are making their move tonight."

The Emperor's expression remained calm, but his eyes sharpened. "We intervene. Not as allies of the Church, but to prevent Kokabiel from gaining the fragments. We strike from the shadows, disrupt their operation, and extract what advantage we can. Kiba, you take point on countering any holy sword activity. Akeno, provide long-range support and crowd control. Rias and I will lead the main assault. Asia and Koneko will handle rear support and healing."

He turned to the full peerage. "This is not a full-scale battle yet. We test their strength, gather information, and retreat if necessary. Control is more important than victory tonight."

The peerage moved out under cover of darkness. Raynare had already positioned herself to monitor from above.

The warehouse district was dimly lit, abandoned buildings casting long shadows. Fallen angel agents — led by a mid-level commander — were attempting to secure a hidden Excalibur fragment when Xenovia and Irina arrived. Holy light clashed with dark spears almost immediately.

The Emperor's team struck from the flanks.

"Boost!" The gauntlet flared as the Emperor led the charge with Rias. Crimson energy met fallen angel light in a violent explosion. Kiba darted through the chaos, demonic swords flashing as he engaged agents trying to flank the Church exorcists. Akeno rained controlled lightning from above, disrupting enemy formations without revealing the full extent of her power.

Xenovia noticed the intervention immediately. "Devils?! What is your purpose here?!"

Irina called out, "Issei! You're helping us?!"

The Emperor's voice cut through the noise with commanding clarity. "We have a common enemy tonight. Focus on the fallen angels. We can settle differences later."

The battle was fierce but contained. The Emperor used short, powerful boosts to dismantle key enemy positions while Rias's Power of Destruction cleared groups efficiently. Kiba's swords proved effective against both fallen angels and the stray holy energy from Xenovia's Durandal. Akeno's lightning created openings that the team exploited with growing coordination.

One fallen angel commander tried to escape with the Excalibur fragment. The Emperor pursued, using enhanced speed and a well-timed Destiny Sever to disrupt the enemy's escape route. He struck decisively, forcing the commander to drop the fragment.

Xenovia seized the opportunity, securing the piece with a powerful swing of Durandal. "This belongs to the Church!"

The Emperor did not contest it. "Take it. But know that Kokabiel will not stop with one fragment. We will meet again."

The remaining fallen angels retreated in disarray. The Emperor signaled his team to withdraw before the fight escalated further, leaving Xenovia and Irina standing amid the aftermath.

As the peerage regrouped in a safe location, Kiba exhaled heavily. "We disrupted their plan tonight. But Xenovia now suspects we're hiding something significant."

The Emperor nodded. "Good. Suspicion is better than ignorance. We gained valuable combat data and prevented Kokabiel from securing the fragment. This was a successful test."

Akeno approached, breathing slightly heavier from the exertion. "Issei-kun… fighting beside you like that felt right. I want more opportunities to stand with you — not just as a member of the peerage."

The Emperor met her eyes. "You performed well tonight. Continue building that reliability. The path is opening, Akeno."

Rias stood close, her hand brushing his. "We controlled the battlefield tonight. But Kokabiel will respond to this setback."

Raynare appeared shortly after, confirming that Kokabiel had been informed of the interference. "He's angry. He's accelerating his plans. A direct move on Kuoh may come sooner than we thought."

The Emperor's expression remained cold and ambitious. "Let him come. Every setback we cause him is another thread we steal. We are no longer reacting. We are dictating the pace."

That night, as he reviewed the system status with Rias beside him, new notifications appeared:

**Side Quest: Church Agents — Progress: 79%**

**Battle Data Acquired: Improved countermeasures against holy energy.**

**Current EXP: 2,910 / 3000 (Level 5)**

The Emperor looked out into the night. The first real clash had occurred. Holy blades had met demonic power. Kokabiel's shadow was no longer distant — it was approaching rapidly.

The breaking point was here.

And the Fate Thief Emperor stood ready to turn the fracture into his greatest advantage yet.

**Chapter End Teaser**

Kokabiel's anger would bring faster, more dangerous moves. Xenovia and Irina would likely seek another meeting after tonight's events. Kiba's past with the Holy Swords threatened to surface fully. Akeno's loyalty was nearing a critical threshold. Ravel's involvement was deepening.

What would happen when Kokabiel decided to take direct action? Would the Church agents become temporary allies or new obstacles? And how would the Emperor respond when the warlord of the fallen angels finally stepped onto the board?

The fates were breaking — and he intended to steal the pieces before anyone else could claim them.
