Chapter 101 - Consequences

The next day....

In a hospital room in fortress Bragg, Kay was sleeping soundly on a bed. Machines beeped around him, monitoring his heart rate, breathing and others. An oxygen mask was attached to his mouth and his body was covered in a white blanket. Minutes passed in silence until Kay awoke. He slowly opened his eyes, seeing the roof of the room first. Confused he looked around, seeing the same plain white walls surrounding him.

He heard the machines beep, the wind flow and bird's chirp.

'Where are they…?'

He thought lazily, seeming remembering nothing. Then, he uttered one word that jogged his memory back.

"Harvey…"

Instantly, he remembered it. The massacre – the demons – the blood – the fireball and most importantly…Harvey's death. His memory streamed back into mind as he remembered everything. Kay's throat closed so hard he couldn't speak. It felt like someone had punched through his chest and left the fist there. He choked on his own words, taking in deep breaths with a crackling voice.

Then, tears silently streamed down from his eyes, sorrow washing over him. Right then, the door clicked open and a nurse entered the room. She approached Kay's bed and gasped when she saw him awake. Seeing his tears, her heart ached. She wiped them off and helped the enforcer to sit straight. Then, she removed his oxygen mask.

"Mr. can you talk?" The nurse asked gently.

"Yes…" Kay replied. "Can I ask you something?"

"Of course."

"Where are the other members of the expedition?"

The room froze. The nurse went silent – not knowing what to say. Kay waited patiently, he wanted to confirm all that happened was actually real. The nurse lowered her head and then, lifted it locking eyes with the enforcer.

"I'm not sure how to this sir but…we only found you, the supreme commander and the lieutenant general at the outer wall."

Kay nodded. Nyx had probably gotten them out of there somehow. He wouldn't know since he went unconscious almost immediately after the prince arrived.

"Where is the supreme commander right now?" He inquired.

The nurse smacked her lips. "Well…she's in a coma."

"A coma?" Kay repeated.

"Yes, the guild master says it's probably because of chaos backlash."

"I see…" Kay lowered his head. "And Arthur?"

"The lieutenant general is…um, how should I say this in a polite way?"

"It's okay. Just tell me."

"…He's lost his mind."

"Huh?" Kay blurted.

"You can see him for yourself but first can I run some tests on you?" The nurse assured.

"Okay…" Kay replied.

The nurse stood up and checked him thoroughly. She opened his eye and shone light onto it. Then, she opened his mouth and checked it with the flashlight as well. After a while of conducting such procedures, she finally stepped back, scribbled somethings onto her clipboard and put her pen down.

"All done, shall we get going?"

Kay nodded and hung her legs off the bed. He took a deep breath and placed them on the ground. Then, he slowly stood up. He smiled as he stood up for a moment. Then, the next instant, he crashed into the ground. The nurse rushed over to him.

"A-Are you okay?" She asked, crouching down.

"Yeah…" Kay replied. "Can you get me a wheelchair?"

The nurse stood up and headed out of the room. After a while, she brought back a wheelchair. She helped Kay onto it. The enforcer rested comfortably on the chair and pulled a screen towards him that was directly attached to the chair. Using the controls embedded into, he moved forward as the wheels spun. The nurse trailed behind him as they exited the room and strolled through the hallway.

The hallway was quite empty. The white walls made Kay feel even more dull then he already was. He stopped for a moment and tilted his head back.

"Where is Arthur?" he questioned.

"Um…I'd advise not to see him…especially right now."

"I'll only catch a glance. He's my captain after all. I must check up on him."

"…Fine." The nurse replied.

She led him towards a room farther away than the others.

"This is the inbuilt psych ward we have for mentally…disabled patients." She said.

"Should we go inside?" Kay asked.

"No…he'll get agitated when he sees you. It's best if I show you through the CCTV cameras." The nurse stated.

Kay nodded, understanding his captain's dilemma. The nurse once again, led him towards the surveillance room which was littered with cameras. Kay rolled up to the camera that was in Arthur's room and took a look.

Through the CCTV, he could see Arthur lying on a bed in a wooden room. A nurse was sitting beside him, monitoring him at all times. Arthur's eyes looked hollow as if he had lost the light that was once in him. Kay's heart clenched and he bit his lip.

'Harvey, Amelia, Maple…I'm sorry…'

He wiped the tears forming on his eyes, composing himself. He stared at the screen for a long while. The lieutenant general didn't do anything – he just…existed. Sometimes he just lighting chuckled and then, went back to his now normal stoic self. Eventually, Kay questioned the nurse behind him.

"How long had he been like this…?"

"Since he woke up." The nurse answered.

Kay blinked and rolled away from the TV screen. "Let's go. I wish to see the supreme commander."

"Okay." The nurse pushed the door open.

Kay drove through the empty, dull hallway that seemed to stretch for miles. After a few minutes, they arrived at a certain room. The nurse opened the door and let Kay in. Kay drove in without hesitation. Sunlight poured down from the open window as the cold breeze of the ocean flew through the atmosphere. Kay took it in for a moment – sense of relief washing over him. Then, he looked towards the bed in the middle of the room.

Many machines surrounded it like the ones that surrounded him. He rolled up to the bed and so did the nurse. He tipped his head forward, seeing Nyx's figure lying on the bed. Her eyes closed – breathing steady, an oxygen mask placed over her beautiful. Kay groaned and leaned back in his wheel chair.

He stared at her for a while, his heart aching. She looked like a sleeping beauty with her blonde hair and clear skin… but the machines kept beeping, reminding everyone she wasn't sleeping — she was fighting to stay alive. He sat back in his chair, sighing as he contemplated.

'Even the supreme commander…couldn't handle such a monster. Maybe we are doomed after all.'

Then, he chuckled, realizing his mistake. He shook his head, correcting himself.

"No…only Sir. Dante can take down such a monster." He whispered to himself, certain that this mysterious figure could take down what the supreme commander couldn't.
