Leaving behind the open plains that carried the beautiful promise between him and Butterfree, Ash, Misty, and Brock finally arrived in the bustling metropolis of Saffron City.
Towering skyscrapers stretched into the sky, and the city was famed for its thriving culture surrounding Psychic type Pokémon. At its very heart stood their destination, the Saffron Gym, a place that felt strangely solemn and heavy despite being surrounded by urban noise.
"So this is the Saffron Gym? It feels… so quiet. Almost too quiet. It's kind of scary," Misty muttered, unconsciously hugging her arms as she stared at the uniquely styled building that seemed completely isolated from the city's clamor.
"I've heard the Gym Leader, Sabrina, is a Psychic herself. Her personality is… very unusual," Brock said, flipping through his travel guide with a slight frown. "According to this, she rarely shows herself. Very few challengers succeed. And… there are rumors about challengers going in and coming out a little… strange."
Ash's Aura flared subtly as he sensed the atmosphere. The place felt oppressive, saturated with a deep, cold Psychic presence tinged with chaos and loneliness.
He drew a steady breath, eyes resolute. "No matter what, we have to win the Marsh Badge. Let's go."
Pushing open the heavy doors of the Gym, they stepped into a dimly lit interior. The space was vast, eerily empty.
At the far end of the battlefield sat a girl with long, straight black hair, wearing a red dress and holding a doll in her arms. She sat motionless in a high backed chair, her hollow eyes fixed on them.
This girl was the Saffron Gym Leader, Sabrina.
"Challengers?" Sabrina's voice was cool and devoid of emotion. "The rules are simple. Defeat me. If you lose… you'll stay here and play with me."
The doll in her arms suddenly rolled its eyes in an unnatural motion and let out a chilling giggle.
A cold shiver ran down Misty and Brock's spines.
Ash stepped forward, meeting Sabrina's gaze without fear. "I'm Ash from Pallet Town. I challenge the Saffron Gym!"
Sabrina said nothing more. She merely raised her hand lightly. A Poké Ball floated silently into the air, opened by an unseen force.
Inside was Abra.
"Abra, huh? Then I'll…" Ash began to choose his Pokémon, but before he could finish, Sabrina's Psychic power surged. In a flash of light, Abra instantly evolved into Kadabra. An overwhelming wave of psychic energy flooded the battlefield.
"It evolved instantly! That Psychic power is incredible!" Brock exclaimed.
Ash narrowed his eyes, sensing the forcibly stimulated strength within Kadabra and the cold reinforcement of Sabrina's will layered over it.
He had originally planned to send out Pikachu or Scyther, which had an advantage against Psychic types. But now, he changed his mind.
His Aura clearly told him something crucial. The true core of Sabrina was not merely the girl seated in the chair. It was the fusion of her and the doll in her arms, a vessel that carried fragments of her soul and emotions.
Simply defeating Kadabra would likely not mean truly defeating her.
"Looks like we'll need a special approach," Ash murmured, a faint smile tugging at his lips as he took out another Poké Ball. "Go, Gastly!"
"Hehehe~ The great me has arrived!" Gastly cackled as it emerged, twisting through the air and morphing into exaggerated, comical faces in an attempt to disrupt Kadabra.
But under Sabrina's absolute control, Kadabra remained unmoved. A powerful Psybeam shot forward in a blazing streak of light.
"Gastly, dodge! Then use Hypnosis!" Ash commanded.
Gastly slipped into the shadows with agile ease, evading the attack. Its eyes glowed with eerie light as it attempted to lull Kadabra into sleep. However, Sabrina's psychic barrier was extraordinarily strong, and the Hypnosis barely had any effect.
"It's useless," Sabrina said flatly.
Kadabra struck again, unleashing Psychic that surged like a tangible tidal wave toward Gastly.
"Don't take it head on!" Ash shouted. "Use your specialty, Gastly. Illusions! Show her what she cares about most, deep in her heart!"
Haunter understood instantly. A hazy glow spread from its body.
In the next moment, a blurry scene materialized above the battlefield.
A young Sabrina sat alone in a vast, empty room. Toys were scattered around her. She clutched a doll tightly, her eyes filled with longing as she gazed out the window at other children playing together outside. In the distance, her parents stood watching her, their faces marked not only with worry, but also with a trace of fear.
"That's…" Misty covered her mouth in shock.
Sabrina's hollow eyes flickered. For the first time, emotion rippled within them.
Kadabra's movements faltered for just a split second.
Clearly, the vision had stirred the memories she had long sealed away.
"Now's our chance! Gastly, Dark Pulse!" Ash seized the moment.
Gastly gathered a ring of malevolent energy and hurled it fiercely at Kadabra, whose defenses had weakened due to Sabrina's emotional turmoil. It was super effective!
Kadabra let out a sharp cry as it was blasted backward, crashing to the ground and losing the ability to battle.
Sabrina's body trembled slightly. The doll in her arms released a piercing wail.
She lifted her head, and when she looked at Ash again, her eyes were no longer hollow. They were filled with confusion, anger, and a trace of panic at having her heart laid bare.
Her immense psychic power began surging uncontrollably around her, and the entire Gym trembled faintly.
"You… how dare you…" Sabrina's voice quivered as she seemed ready to unleash an even greater force.
"Sabrina!" Ash suddenly shouted, infusing his voice with his Aura, letting it flow like a clear spring in an attempt to soothe the violent psychic vortex.
He walked toward her step by step, his gaze clear and resolute, devoid of hostility.
"I saw it," Ash said softly, his tone gentle and understanding. "You never wanted to hurt anyone. You're just… very lonely. Am I right?"
Sabrina froze. The raging energy around her faltered.
"Psychic power is a gift, not a curse. It shouldn't become a wall that separates you from others." Ash continued, his Aura now surging fully, not in opposition but like warm sunlight, seeping into the cold, closed off fortress around her heart, conveying acceptance, understanding, and kindness.
"Your parents love you. They just didn't know how to reach you. The world outside isn't frightening. There are plenty of people willing to be your friends. Including us." Ash gestured behind him. Misty and Brock immediately nodded vigorously.
"Try… stepping outside and taking a look, okay?" Ash extended his hand. It was not a challenge, but an invitation. "Use your power to protect and to connect, not to shut yourself away. I believe the real you doesn't truly want to turn people into dolls just to keep you company."
Sabrina stared at him blankly, at the pure sincerity and warmth in his eyes, and felt the Aura energy that shared the same origin as her psychic power yet was completely different, brimming with vitality.
The barriers she had built over the years began to crack.
The eerie smile on the doll's face gradually faded, becoming peaceful before dissolving into a faint light that flowed back into Sabrina's body.
The cold emptiness that had long filled her eyes completely vanished, replaced by a clarity of relief and a hint of shy embarrassment. A faint blush colored her cheeks as she lowered her head and said softly, "I… I understand now. Thank you… Ash."
She stood and walked toward him, gently placing a golden badge into his hand. "This is the Marsh Badge you've earned. You… and your Gastly are both very strong. Not just in battle…"

Ash accepted the badge with a smile. "Thank you, Sabrina. If you ever get the chance, you should come travel with us and see the world outside."
Sabrina nodded gently, her gaze lingering on Ash. Beyond gratitude, there was clearly a faint, hazy trace of affection and reliance in her eyes.
As they left the Saffron Gym, Misty leaned close to Ash and whispered, "Hey, Ash… don't you think the way Miss Sabrina was looking at you was… a little strange?"
Ash blinked in confusion. "Huh? Was it? She just went back to normal, right?"
Brock stroked his chin and smiled knowingly. "My, my. Looks like Ash isn't just charming when it comes to catching Pokémon. He's not bad at winning over hearts either…"
Ash: "...What are you even talking about?"
Pikachu: "Pika~" (Shrugging its shoulders.)
