CHAPTER 19: The Truth He Didn't Tell

The ride back was silent.

Too silent.

Elara sat beside Aiden in the car, her hands clenched tightly in her lap.

Her mind replayed Sophia's words over and over again.

"Ask your husband."

She didn't want to.

But she couldn't ignore it either.

Aiden leaned back slightly, his injured shoulder already bandaged.

His face was calm.

Too calm.

That made it worse.

"Say it."

His voice broke the silence.

Low.

Steady.

Elara blinked.

"What?"

"The question," he said, turning his head slightly toward her. "You've been holding it in since we left."

Her chest tightened.

Of course he knew.

He always knew.

She swallowed.

Then—

"Was she telling the truth?"

The air shifted instantly.

Aiden didn't answer right away.

His gaze returned to the window.

"That depends," he said quietly.

Her heart dropped.

"On what?" she asked.

"On what you think you heard."

Frustration flared instantly.

"Don't do that," she snapped. "Don't twist it."

Her voice rose slightly.

"She said Daniel isn't the one in charge," Elara continued. "She said I should ask you."

Her eyes locked onto him.

"So I'm asking."

Silence.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Then—

Aiden exhaled slowly.

"I knew about the network."

The words hit like a blow.

Elara's breath caught.

"You… knew?"

He nodded once.

Her chest tightened painfully.

"And you didn't tell me?" she whispered.

Aiden's jaw tightened slightly.

"I couldn't."

"That's not an answer," she shot back.

"It's the truth."

Elara shook her head.

"No… no, that's not enough."

Her voice cracked slightly now.

"You said you never lied to me," she continued. "You said I trusted you."

Her eyes burned.

"So what is this?"

Aiden finally turned to face her fully.

"I didn't lie."

Her laugh was hollow.

"You just left things out?" she said bitterly. "That's not better, Aiden."

His gaze didn't waver.

"If I had told you everything back then," he said, his voice low, controlled, "you would've been in even more danger."

"I was already in danger!" she snapped.

The words hung in the air.

Sharp.

Unforgiving.

"And I was trying to keep you alive," he said.

Silence followed.

Elara's chest rose and fell unevenly.

Her heart torn between anger and something else.

"Then explain it to me," she said finally.

Softer.

But firm.

"Explain how you knew about all of this… and didn't stop it."

Aiden's expression darkened slightly.

"I've been trying to stop it for years."

Her breath caught.

"What?"

"This network," he continued. "Daniel, the accounts, the money—it's bigger than all of them."

Elara's mind raced.

"How big?"

A pause.

Then—

"Government-level."

Her stomach dropped.

"No…"

"Yes."

The weight of it settled heavily in the car.

"You got involved before you met me," Aiden continued. "You were already digging into something you didn't fully understand."

Elara frowned.

"And you just… watched?"

His gaze hardened.

"No."

A beat.

"I protected you."

Her heart skipped.

"You think that accident was the first time they tried to silence you?" he added quietly.

Her breath caught again.

"What…?"

Aiden looked away briefly.

"There were threats," he said. "Warnings. People watching you."

Elara's head spun.

"And you didn't tell me?"

"You wouldn't have stopped," he said simply.

Silence.

Painful.

Heavy.

Because deep down—

She knew he was right.

"I thought I could handle it from the shadows," he added. "Keep you safe without pulling you deeper into it."

Elara shook her head slowly.

"And how did that work out?"

The question hit.

Hard.

Aiden didn't respond.

Because he didn't need to.

She almost died.

Silence filled the car again.

But this time—

It wasn't just tension.

It was something more fragile.

Trust.

Cracked.

But not broken.

"Elara…"

His voice was softer now.

Careful.

"I never used you."

She looked at him.

Really looked at him.

"And now?" she asked quietly.

A pause.

"Now," he said, "I'm done holding back."

Her heart skipped.

"No more half-truths," he added. "No more distance."

His eyes held hers.

Deep.

Certain.

"If you're in this… you're in it with me."

Elara's chest tightened.

This wasn't just about truth anymore.

It was about choice.

Again.

Just like before.

She exhaled slowly.

Then—

"Then don't hide anything from me again."

Aiden nodded.

"I won't."

A pause.

"And if I find out you are?"

His gaze didn't waver.

"You won't have to."

Silence.

But this time—

It wasn't heavy.

It was… different.

Stronger.

Because even though the truth hurt—

They were finally standing on the same side of it.
