Chapter 9 - chapter nine

CHAPTER NINE: THE ALPHA WHO CHOSE WRONGLY

The circle tightened.

One step at a time.

Kael's wolves—his pack—closed in around him.

Not cautiously.

Not uncertainly.

Deliberately.

Lyra felt it immediately.

That shift.

The loyalty in the air had changed.

It no longer pointed to Kael.

It pointed to fear.

And fear…

Was stronger than loyalty.

Kael didn't move.

Didn't flinch.

But something in his eyes hardened.

"You're making a mistake," he said quietly.

Darius stood at the front of the circle, unmoved.

"No," he replied. "You did."

A low growl rumbled through Kael's chest.

"You follow me," Kael said. "That's how this pack survives."

Darius shook his head slowly.

"We survive because we adapt," he said. "And right now… you're refusing to."

Kael's gaze sharpened.

"You're challenging me."

It wasn't a question.

Silence.

Then—

"Yes."

The word landed like thunder.

The pack stilled.

Because this—

Was no longer about Lyra.

This was Alpha law.

A challenge.

Lyra's breath caught.

"No…" she whispered.

But no one listened.

Kael stepped forward slowly, his presence darkening the air itself.

"You think you can lead them?" he asked quietly.

Darius didn't hesitate.

"I think I already am."

A ripple of tension moved through the wolves behind him.

And Kael saw it.

The truth.

They were already choosing sides.

"You'd tear this pack apart for fear," Kael said.

Darius's voice dropped.

"I'd save it from destruction."

His gaze flickered—just briefly—to Lyra.

That was enough.

Kael's control snapped.

The shift was instant.

Bones cracked.

Muscle tore and reformed.

The Alpha wolf emerged—

Massive.

Dominant.

Unquestionable.

The ground trembled beneath him.

"Then prove it," Kael growled.

Darius didn't hesitate.

He shifted too.

Faster than most.

Cleaner.

Deadlier.

And then—

They clashed.

The impact shook the clearing.

Claw met claw.

Fang met flesh.

This wasn't a fight.

It was dominance.

Survival.

Lyra stood frozen, her heart slamming violently against her ribs.

"Stop…" she whispered.

But her voice didn't carry.

Because the moment the fight began—

The pack chose.

Some surged forward—

To support Kael.

Others—

Held back.

Watching.

Waiting.

Divided.

Selene moved closer to Lyra, her voice low.

"This was inevitable."

Lyra shook her head.

"No… this is because of me."

Selene didn't deny it.

"Yes," she said softly. "But it was coming anyway."

Lyra's chest tightened painfully.

Kael roared as Darius's claws tore into his side.

Blood hit the ground.

Something inside Lyra snapped.

"STOP!"

This time—

Her voice carried.

The air cracked.

Power surged outward violently, forcing wolves back, halting movement, freezing the fight mid-motion.

Kael and Darius both staggered.

But Lyra—

She stepped forward.

Slowly.

Her eyes glowing silver again.

Stronger this time.

More controlled.

More dangerous.

"Enough," she said.

The word wasn't loud.

But it wasn't meant to be.

It was meant to be obeyed.

And it was.

Every wolf went still.

Even Kael.

Even Darius.

Lyra looked between them.

At the blood.

At the damage.

At what she had caused.

"This ends now," she said.

Darius's voice cut through the silence.

"No," he said hoarsely. "It ends when you're dead."

Lyra's gaze snapped to him.

Cold.

Sharp.

"Then come try again," she said quietly.

The challenge hung in the air.

Darius didn't move.

Not because he didn't want to—

But because he couldn't.

Not with that power pressing down on him.

Kael stepped forward slightly, his voice low.

"Lyra… don't do this."

Her expression flickered.

Just for a second.

Then hardened again.

"I'm not the one doing this," she said.

The words cut.

Because they were true.

The pack.

The betrayal.

The fear.

All of it had led here.

Lyra took another step forward.

And the ground obeyed.

Cracking.

Shifting.

"I didn't ask for this," she continued softly. "I didn't ask to be hunted… or feared… or killed over and over again."

Kael's chest tightened.

"Lyra—"

"But I'm done running," she said.

Silence.

Heavy.

Final.

Darius pushed against the pressure, forcing himself upright.

"You think power makes you untouchable?" he rasped.

Lyra tilted her head slightly.

"No," she said.

Another step.

"It makes me inevitable."

The same word.

The same truth.

And this time—

No one argued.

Kael moved suddenly—

Closing the distance between them.

"Then choose," he said, his voice rough, intense. "Right now."

Lyra stilled.

"Choose what?"

Kael held her gaze.

"Us," he said.

The word hit harder than anything else.

Not the pack.

Not the fight.

Him.

Lyra's breath caught.

"You… or them," Kael continued.

Silence.

Because that—

Wasn't a fair choice.

It wasn't even a possible one.

Lyra looked at the pack.

At their fear.

Their anger.

Their distrust.

Then back at Kael.

At the only person who had stood in front of her…

Instead of against her.

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"I don't know how to be what you need."

Kael's answer came instantly.

"Then don't be."

A pause.

"Be what you are."

The words echoed inside her.

Deep.

Dangerous.

Because what she was…

Might destroy him.

Might destroy everything.

Lyra closed her eyes briefly.

And when she opened them—

They were still silver.

"I'm not choosing," she said softly.

Kael's expression tightened.

"What?"

Lyra stepped back.

Away from him.

Away from all of them.

"I'm ending it," she said.

The air shifted violently.

Selene's eyes widened.

"No—Lyra, don't—"

Too late.

Power surged.

Wild.

Uncontrolled.

Different.

The ground split open beneath her feet—

Light spilling from the cracks.

Kael lunged forward.

"LYRA!"

But this time—

She didn't stop.

And for the first time—

He realized something worse than losing her.

He might not be able to reach her at all.
