Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: The Price of an Ending

The space had stabilized.

The threads of existence floated quietly around Asad—

No longer chaotic.

No longer resisting.

They were… waiting.

Leon looked around slowly.

"…Everything feels… different."

Asad didn't respond.

His eyes were fixed on the threads.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

"…Because now…"

"…this story is in our hands."

Silence.

The frozen form of the Origin stood in the distance—

Motionless.

Powerless.

Leon exhaled slowly.

"…So we just… end it?"

Asad's expression didn't change.

"…It's not that simple."

Leon frowned.

"…What do you mean?"

Asad raised his hand slightly.

One thread moved toward him.

Glowing faintly.

"…Every story has a structure."

"…A beginning…"

"…a middle…"

"…and an end."

He looked at the thread.

"…But this one…"

A pause.

"…is broken."

Leon stepped closer.

"…Then we fix it."

Asad shook his head.

"…Fixing means choosing."

Leon narrowed his eyes.

"…Choosing what?"

Asad turned toward him.

For the first time—

There was seriousness in his expression beyond calmness.

"…What stays…"

"…and what disappears."

Silence.

Leon froze.

"…You mean…"

Asad nodded.

"…If we rewrite the ending…"

"…some things won't exist anymore."

A heavy pause followed.

Leon clenched his fists.

"…Like… this world?"

Asad didn't answer immediately.

That silence—

Was enough.

Leon looked down.

"…Everyone… everything…"

Asad spoke quietly:

"…This world was already marked for reset."

"…I just delayed it."

Leon's breathing slowed.

"…Then what's the point…?"

"…If everything still disappears?"

Asad looked at the threads again.

"…Because now…"

"…we can decide what remains."

Leon looked up.

"…We… choose?"

Asad nodded.

"…Yes."

A pause.

"…But there's a cost."

Leon frowned.

"…What cost?"

Asad didn't speak for a moment.

Then—

"…The one who rewrites the ending…"

"…can't remain inside the story."

Silence.

Leon's eyes widened.

"…What…?"

Asad looked at him.

"…The 'Author' can't exist in a completed story."

Leon shook his head.

"…No…"

"…You're saying…"

Asad's voice was calm.

"…If I finish this…"

"…I disappear."

The words settled heavily.

Leon stepped forward.

"…There has to be another way!"

Asad smiled faintly.

"…There isn't."

Leon's fists trembled.

"…You can't just decide that!"

Asad looked at him.

"…I'm not deciding."

A pause.

"…This is how stories work."

Leon's voice rose slightly.

"…Then break it!"

Silence.

Asad didn't answer.

Instead—

He looked at the threads again.

Thinking.

Calculating.

Understanding.

"…If I don't…"

"…everything resets."

Leon froze.

"…And if you do…"

Asad finished:

"…I disappear."

A long silence followed.

Leon looked down.

His grip tightened.

"…That's not fair…"

Asad smirked slightly.

"…Stories aren't meant to be fair."

A pause.

"…They're meant to be meaningful."

Leon looked at him.

"…And what about you?"

"…Do you just accept that?"

Asad didn't hesitate.

"…Yeah."

Leon's eyes shook.

"…Why…?"

Asad looked at the threads—

Then at Leon.

"…Because this isn't just my story anymore."

A pause.

"…It's yours too."

Silence.

Leon's breathing slowed.

He understood.

But he didn't accept it.

"…I won't let you disappear."

Asad smiled faintly.

"…You don't get to choose that."

Leon stepped forward.

"…Then I'll find another ending!"

The threads reacted slightly.

As if responding to his words.

Asad noticed.

"…Huh…"

"…Interesting."

Leon looked at him.

"…What?"

Asad's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…You might actually be able to."

Silence.

Leon froze.

"…What…?"

Asad raised his hand.

Another thread moved.

"…This story…"

"…was originally written by me."

A pause.

"…But now…"

He looked at Leon.

"…you're part of its balance."

Leon's eyes widened.

"…You mean…"

Asad nodded.

"…If I'm the 'Author'…"

"…then you might be the 'Ending.'"

The space trembled slightly.

The threads reacted.

Leon stepped forward.

"…Then tell me what to do."

Asad looked at him for a moment.

Then—

He smiled.

Not calm.

Not distant.

But real.

"…Help me rewrite this."

The threads began to glow.

The story…

Was reaching its conclusion.
