Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: Your Parents Sold You

Mr. Forrester wasn't at the family estate; he had left for the construction site much earlier.

With such a major incident, no one could possibly sit still at home.

Megan Kane had no choice but to tell the butler to turn around and head for the construction site.

Her mind was a complete mess. The moment the car came to a stop, Megan Kane bolted out into the fine drizzle without even grabbing an umbrella.

Rowan Monroe followed close behind her. "An accident just happened on site. You shouldn't be running around like this."

"Mr. Forrester and the others know we're here. They'll come and find us."

Rowan Monroe held a black umbrella. The situation at the construction site was chaotic, with all sorts of people milling about, and on top of that, the accident had just occurred.

The media had already swarmed the area, blocking it completely. People from all walks of life were coming and going; everyone was there.

Mr. Forrester was trapped in the middle of the crowd, unable to break free, as he was continuously making announcements to everyone, trying to hold the situation together and prevent it from collapsing completely.

He had absolutely no time to run over and deal with Megan Kane, his future daughter-in-law.

"We're not needed here. Let's go to the relevant authorities. By the way, does Mr. Forrester know that Jason Forrester has been taken into custody?"

Megan Kane couldn't sit still for a second. The unresolved issue weighed heavily on her mind.

'How could I possibly let my guard down?'

"Mr. Forrester already knows, but he's completely overwhelmed right now and can't deal with it."

"Let's just go back for now. The rain is getting heavier."

The white dress Rowan Monroe had worn was already spattered with mud. Her shoes were soaked through, leaving her in a difficult position.

'I shouldn't have come out,' she thought. 'But I was too worried about Megan to stay behind.'

'Without Megan, in this ruthless, man-eating high-society world, I feel like Blair White would bully me to death even if no one else targeted me.'

The corners of Megan Kane's eyes were red. She didn't know why she felt such a persistent, nagging anxiety, but she just couldn't calm down.

She wasn't sure what her feelings for Jason Forrester truly were, but right now, her only thought was to get him out.

"If Mr. Forrester doesn't have time, then we'll go to the authorities ourselves."

"Tell the butler to change course right now!"

With that, Megan Kane headed back toward the intersection they had come from, but the car wasn't there.

Instead, she was met by the butler, who ran up to her. "The workers are all riled up! I don't know what Mr. Forrester said, but they've smashed all the cars. Ours was smashed too. We're blocked in and can't get out."

"You two must leave now! Don't stay here, it's too dangerous."

"If people recognize you, they won't let you leave. We need to take a shortcut. Let's get out of this site first, then we can figure out the rest."

The butler, a man in his fifties, was running back and forth. Fortunately, he was still hale and hearty, thanks to his daily exercise routine.

Otherwise, he would have collapsed long ago.

It was as if he had jinxed them.

Before the three of them could even make it to the site's exit, they were spotted and photographed by reporters.

"Look! Isn't that the woman who's been staying at Jason Forrester's place recently?"

"That's her! She's Jason Forrester's wife, Mrs. Forrester."

The pack of reporters instantly swiveled their cameras in their direction. They couldn't even get close enough to interview Mr. Forrester.

They weren't getting any exclusive scoops over there anyway, and now a much better subject had appeared.

Knowing to seize the closest opportunity, they all aimed their cameras at Megan Kane.

"Ignore them! We have to go, now!" the old butler urged. "If those workers notice us, they won't let us leave. They're on edge."

The old butler's face was grim. He'd never expected these reporters to be such vultures.

Then again, he couldn't entirely blame the media. Megan Kane had been trending online so frequently lately.

Even though things were scrubbed from the internet quickly, people still managed to find photos and other tidbits.

Rowan Monroe's face was deathly pale. Before she could take more than a few steps, she slipped and fell hard into the muddy water.

She was shivering from head to toe. She hadn't worn anything warm, just a thin dress.

The heat in the car and the house had been cranked up so high that she hadn't felt the cold outside.

Megan Kane doubled back, grabbed her by the wrist, and pulled her forward.

"I can't run anymore! My ankle really hurts. You two go on ahead. I'll be fine."

Rowan Monroe was pale and gasping for air. She was naturally frail and couldn't handle this kind of ordeal.

But before the reporters could surround them, they were shoved aside by the workers.

"You're Jason Forrester's wife, right?" one of them demanded. "Why hasn't your family offered any compensation for our men who were in the accident? And now you want one of us to be the scapegoat?"

"Yeah! It was obviously your supervisor who wasn't up to code, and you cut corners on materials! This should all be on you! Why are you trying to pin it on us as a 'manufacturing accident'?"

"None of us are taking the fall for this. If you don't give us an answer today, no one is leaving!"

As they spoke, the group of workers started to close in, ready to grab them.

The old butler quickly stepped in front of the two women.

Just then, Mr. Forrester's bodyguards also began pushing through the crowd toward them.

He had, after all, noticed the two women earlier but had been too busy to deal with them. He hadn't expected them to get trapped.

A chill ran through Rowan Monroe. Faced with the workers' aggressive demands, she didn't know what to say and could only stammer.

Megan Kane forced a calm expression as she frantically dialed numbers on her phone, hoping to get the relevant authorities to come and mediate.

She just needed to calm the crowd down and stop the situation from escalating.

Otherwise, the scene would spiral out of control, and there was no telling what terrible things might happen.

Mr. Forrester's face was grim as he made his way over, his bodyguards nearly flattened by the crush of people.

"What are you doing just standing there like idiots? Stop staring and get out of here!"

Mr. Forrester couldn't believe they were just standing there, frozen. 'Are they brainless?' he thought. 'Do they actually want to get beaten up?'

"Thank you, Mr. Forrester! We're leaving right now!"

Rowan Monroe knew that without a car, they'd have to make it on foot. Every second counted.

Megan Kane reached out to support Rowan Monroe, who couldn't move quickly with her injured ankle.

The old butler also looked grim. He had no idea where they would find a car now; they just had to get out of there first and figure out the rest later.

The three of them managed to leave, but it wasn't so easy for Mr. Forrester. He was still stuck at the scene, trying to pacify the crowd.

It looked like Mr. Forrester wouldn't be able to leave until the authorities arrived to mediate.
