The small ramen stand was unusually quiet for that hour. Steam curled lazily from two bowls sitting across from each other. The clink of chopsticks against ceramic echoed louder than it should have.
Naruto slurped his noodles, then glanced up.
"You've barely touched yours, Ren."
Across from him, Ren sat still, chopsticks resting untouched over the bowl, "…Not hungry," Ren said.
Naruto frowned. "You picked the place."
Silence settled between them again, broken only by the soft bubbling of broth. Naruto leaned forward slightly, "Why are you doing this?"
No response.
He sighed, setting his chopsticks down.
"There has to be a reason. People don't just… turn their backs on everything for nothing."
Ren finally lifted his chopsticks—but instead of eating, he just stirred the broth, "…Do they?" he murmured.
Naruto's eyes narrowed. "Don't dodge the question."
"I'm not dodging it," Ren replied calmly. "I just don't think the answer matters as much as you think it does."
Naruto scoffed. "Of course it matters. Reasons are what decide everything."
A faint ripple disturbed the surface of the broth. "Or maybe," Ren said, "they're just something people tell themselves so they can sleep at night."
Naruto went still.
"That's not true," he shot back. "We fight for our friends. For our village. For the people we care about. That's not just some story."
Ren lifted a small portion of noodles, watching them hang for a moment… then let them fall back into the bowl.
"And what happens," he asked quietly, "when those reasons aren't enough?"
Naruto didn't answer.
"When you fight for something," Ren continued, "and you still lose it anyway… what does your reason become then?"
The question hung in the air like the steam between them, Naruto's grip tightened around his chopsticks, "…You keep going," he said firmly. "That's what it becomes."
Ren finally looked up, meeting his eyes, "You really believe that."
"I do."
A pause.
Then—
"I used to," Ren admitted.
Naruto's expression shifted, "So what changed?" he asked.
The answer came softer this time, "Reality."
The word landed heavier than any shout. Ren picked up a piece of meat, stared at it… then set it back down, "Reasons didn't stop anything," he said. "Didn't protect anyone. All they did was make the fall hurt more."
Naruto pushed his bowl aside slightly, no longer hungry, "…So now what?" he asked. "You just do whatever you want?"
"I do what I can," Ren replied. "Without pretending it means something bigger than it does."
Naruto shook his head. "That's empty."
"Maybe," Ren said. "But it's honest."
Another silence.
Then Naruto reached forward, grabbing his chopsticks again, "Then I'll keep believing anyway."
Ren blinked.
Naruto took a bite, then pointed his chopsticks at him, "Because even if reasons don't always work… they're still worth having."
Steam drifted between them as his voice steadied.
"They're what make us human."
For a moment—
Nothing.
Then Ren let out a quiet breath… almost a laugh, "…You haven't changed."
Naruto smirked slightly. "Didn't plan to."
A small pause.
Then, finally—
Ren picked up his chopsticks again, "…Fine," he said, taking a bite, "…I'll eat."
Naruto grinned.
And for just a moment—
The fight between them felt a little further away.
A/N
This concept doesn't need to be used in Naruto, it's something that can literally be used in any story. I just decided to use Naruto as the example.
