Chapter 17 - Starting From Nothing

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN: Starting From Nothing

Everything was gone.

Just like that.

Julian stood outside the building he once controlled, staring up at it.

The same place where he gave orders.

Made decisions.

Lived a life of power.

Now—

He was just another man standing outside.

With nothing.

His phone buzzed.

Message after message.

Missed calls.

But not the ones that mattered.

His father had made it clear.

No access to company accounts.

No privileges.

No protection.

Julian let out a slow breath.

"So this is what it feels like…" he muttered.

For the first time in his life—

He was on his own.

Meanwhile…

Chidimma sat quietly at her desk.

The office felt different today.

Strange.

Tense.

"Have you heard?" one staff whispered to another.

"He's been cut off completely…"

Her heart skipped.

She didn't need to ask who they were talking about.

Julian.

She tried to focus.

Tried to ignore it.

But she couldn't.

Minutes later—

Her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Julian.

She hesitated.

Then answered.

"Hello?"

Silence.

Then—

His voice.

"Can we meet?"

Something in his tone made her pause.

It wasn't confident.

Or commanding.

It was… different.

"Where?" she asked quietly.

Later that evening…

Chidimma arrived at a small café.

Simple.

Nothing like the places Julian was used to.

She spotted him immediately.

Sitting alone.

No expensive suit.

No driver.

No power.

Just him.

For a moment—

She almost didn't recognize him.

She walked over slowly.

"You look different," she said.

Julian gave a faint smile.

"I feel different."

She sat down across from him.

"What happened?" she asked.

Even though she already knew.

"I walked away," he said.

Her heart skipped.

"From everything?"

He nodded.

"For real this time," he added.

Silence.

Chidimma studied him carefully.

Looking for doubt.

Regret.

Anything.

But all she saw was determination.

"You gave up everything," she said.

"I didn't give up everything," he replied.

Her brows furrowed slightly.

"I gave up what was never really mine," he continued.

"And I chose what matters."

Her chest tightened.

"Don't do that," she said softly.

"Do what?"

"Don't make it sound like it's all because of me," she replied.

Julian shook his head.

"It's not just because of you," he said.

"It's because I'm finally choosing my own life."

That hit differently.

For a moment—

Neither of them spoke.

Then Chidimma asked quietly—

"What happens now?"

Julian leaned back slightly.

A small, uncertain smile on his face.

"I start from zero," he said.

She blinked.

"You? Starting from zero?"

He nodded.

"No company. No money. No connections," he added.

"Just me."

Chidimma didn't know what to say.

This was real.

"You're not afraid?" she asked.

Julian looked at her.

"I am," he admitted.

That surprised her.

"But I'd rather be afraid and free," he continued,

"than comfortable and controlled."

Silence.

Then slowly—

A small smile appeared on Chidimma's face.

For the first time in a long while—

She saw him.

Not as the powerful man he used to be.

But as someone real.

And maybe—

Someone worth believing in.

"I won't make this easy for you," she said.

Julian smiled slightly.

"I don't expect you to."

"But…" she added softly,

"you've taken the first step."

Hope.

Small.

But real.

And as they sat there—

Two people who had lost so much—

They both knew one thing.

This wasn't the end.

It was the beginning of something new.
