Chapter 16 - Breaking The Chain

CHAPTER SIXTEEN: Breaking the Chain

The decision had been made.

And this time—

Julian wasn't going back on it.

He stood in his office, staring at his reflection.

For the first time in a long while…

He felt clear.

Focused.

Certain.

A knock came at the door.

"Come in."

Vanessa walked in.

Confident as always.

But the moment she saw his expression—

She paused.

"What's wrong?" she asked.

Julian didn't waste time.

"We need to end this."

Silence.

Vanessa blinked.

Then laughed softly.

"That's not funny."

"I'm serious," he said. "This engagement… it's over."

The smile on her face disappeared completely.

"You don't mean that," she said.

"I do."

Her eyes hardened.

"Because of her?" she asked.

Julian didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

Vanessa let out a sharp breath.

"So after everything… you're throwing this away for her?"

"I'm not throwing anything away," Julian replied calmly.

"I'm choosing what should have been mine from the beginning."

That hit her.

Hard.

"You think it's that simple?" she said. "You think you can just walk away from a contract between families?"

Julian stepped forward.

"I don't care about the contract," he said.

Vanessa stared at him.

Then slowly—

She smiled.

But this time—

It was cold.

Dangerous.

"You will," she said quietly.

Before he could respond—

The door opened.

His father walked in.

"I was wondering how long it would take," he said calmly.

Julian turned to face him.

"I'm ending it," he said firmly.

His father looked at him.

Disappointed.

But not surprised.

"No," he said simply.

Julian frowned.

"No?"

"You don't get to make that decision," his father continued.

"This engagement is not about feelings. It's about power."

"I don't care," Julian replied.

"But I do," his father said.

The room went cold.

"You will marry Vanessa," he continued.

"And you will forget about that girl."

Julian's eyes darkened.

"I'm not marrying anyone I don't love."

Vanessa scoffed softly.

"Love?" she said. "You think love is enough to stand against everything we've built?"

"Yes," Julian replied without hesitation.

Silence.

Then—

His father laughed.

Low.

Dangerous.

"Then you are more foolish than I thought," he said.

Julian stepped closer.

"I'm done letting you control my life."

That was it.

The line had been crossed.

His father's expression changed completely.

From calm…

To something far more dangerous.

"You want freedom?" he asked quietly.

Julian didn't respond.

"Fine," his father said.

"But understand this—freedom comes with consequences."

A chill ran through the room.

"You walk away from this family… you walk away from everything."

Julian's jaw tightened.

"No company."

"No name."

"No protection."

Silence.

"You will have nothing," his father finished.

Vanessa watched closely.

Waiting.

Julian took a deep breath.

Then—

He spoke.

"Then I'll build my own."

Shock flashed across Vanessa's face.

Even his father paused.

"Without you," Julian added.

The silence that followed was heavy.

Explosive.

"Very well," his father said slowly.

"From this moment… you are on your own."

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Julian, think about this—"

But he stepped back.

Away from her.

"I already have."

And just like that—

Everything changed.

Power.

Family.

Control.

All broken.

And now—

Julian had nothing left to lose.

Except one thing.

Chidimma.
