Cherreads

Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: Hawaii (2)

As morning light spread across Waikiki Beach, the sand shimmered in soft gold—and the Nohara family's "vacation mode" immediately descended into chaos.

"Shin-chan! Put your swimsuit on properly and stop running!" Misae chased after him across the beach, clutching sunscreen in one hand. Meanwhile, Himawari sat in her stroller, happily chewing on Hiroshi's sunglasses as if they were her latest snack.

Yoichi walked over carrying two large bags of beach toys, while Matsuzaka Ume followed behind in her delicate heels, carefully watching every step she took.

"If I had known, I would've worn sneakers," she muttered irritably. "This sand is absolutely going to ruin my shoes."

"Don't frown," Yoichi said with a smile, handing her a chilled coconut drink. "Look at the ocean—it's bluer than the sky back in Tokyo."

Matsuzaka took the glass, the coolness seeping into her fingertips—

And just then—

A scream echoed across the beach.

Shin-chan came running wildly, holding a seashell like a trophy, zigzagging through the crowd and nearly knocking over an ice cream cart.

"Nohara Shinnosuke!" Matsuzaka shouted instinctively—

Then froze.

That tone… sounded exactly like she was scolding her students back at kindergarten.

Yoichi burst into laughter. "Looks like Teacher Ume can't switch off work mode—even in Hawaii."

Not far away, Hiroshi had already collapsed onto a beach chair, covering his face with a towel.

"Finally… I can rest…"

Before he could finish—

A small weight jumped onto his back.

"Charge, my ocean warhorse!" Shin-chan yelled, drumming enthusiastically on Hiroshi's stomach.

Hiroshi groaned.

Misae didn't even bother intervening this time—she simply grabbed Matsuzaka's arm.

"Let's go take pictures before something worse happens."

Out on the pier, the ocean breeze carried a warm, salty scent.

Matsuzaka had just struck a pose—

When Shin-chan came sprinting barefoot again, shouting about becoming a "surfing hero," nearly knocking her straight into the water.

And as if that wasn't enough—

Himawari somehow appeared beside her and grabbed a fistful of her long hair, refusing to let go.

"Help—!"

Matsuzaka's scream mixed perfectly with Himawari's delighted laughter, turning the scene into complete chaos.

Peace only returned when a local vendor passed by, handing them mango ice creams.

Shin-chan immediately sat down, licking his treat and digging in the sand with a small shovel, as if burying some grand "treasure."

By afternoon, the sun had grown intense.

Yoichi suggested snorkeling.

Matsuzaka initially resisted—but ended up being gently pulled into the water anyway.

"Look over there," Yoichi said, pointing beneath the clear surface.

A school of silver fish shimmered through the water, moving like scattered light.

"They look like tiny stars, don't they?"

Matsuzaka paused—

Then, without realizing it, loosened her grip on his arm and swam after them, curiosity replacing hesitation.

Suddenly—

"Hiroshi! Shin-chan! What are you doing?!"

They turned toward the shore—

And burst out laughing.

Shin-chan had somehow caught a crab and was proudly showing it off—until it clamped onto his finger.

He was crying from the pain—

But still refusing to let go.

A full-scale "battle" between child and crab unfolded.

Hiroshi rushed in to help—

Only to panic and jump back, nearly falling into a hole Shin-chan had dug earlier.

By evening, they gathered at an open-air beach bar.

Misae fed Himawari fruit puree.

Hiroshi enjoyed an iced beer.

Shin-chan lay on the table, drawing what he proudly called a masterpiece.

"What is that?" Yoichi asked.

"It's 'Teacher Ume and Uncle Yoichi's Love Beach!'" Shin-chan announced proudly.

Matsuzaka's face turned bright red instantly.

But before she could react—

Her attention shifted.

The sunset.

The sky melted into shades of orange and violet.

Waves shimmered with golden reflections.

A soft saxophone melody drifted through the air, blending with the rhythm of the sea.

Yoichi gently nudged her and handed her a non-alcoholic cocktail.

"Try it. It looks just like the sky right now."

She took a sip.

Sweet.

Warm.

Lingering.

When she turned to him—

He was already looking at her.

His gaze softer than the sunset itself.

"…This time," she said quietly, "you chose the right place."

Before he could reply—

"LOOK! They're making eyes at each other!"

Shin-chan's voice shattered the moment again.

Matsuzaka turned away immediately—

But the small smile on her lips remained.

In the background, Hiroshi struggled to take photos while Misae complained about his terrible angles.

Himawari waved her tiny hands at the disappearing sun.

The sea breeze carried laughter, warmth, and the faint scent of coconut.

Matsuzaka looked at everything—

And realized something.

This trip—

Messy.

Noisy.

Unpredictable.

Was warmer than any elegant, perfectly planned vacation she had ever imagined.

Because—

It wasn't the scenery that mattered.

It was the people beside you.

Late at night, Shin-chan was already asleep on Hiroshi's back.

Yoichi walked Matsuzaka back to her hotel room and stopped at the door.

"We're going snorkeling at Hanauma Bay tomorrow," he said. "I'll teach you how to find coral."

She crossed her arms lightly, pretending indifference.

"Who needs your teaching…"

Then, after a pause—

Her fingers lightly brushed his hand.

"…But call me in the morning."
