The sun was beginning to dip below the Mumbai skyline, painting the clouds in shades of bruised orange and deep purple. Ranveer stood by the old fountain in the city garden, checking his watch every two minutes. He had asked Sweety to meet him here, and for the first time in ten years, he wasn't thinking about textbooks or rankings. He was thinking about her.
But as the minutes turned into hours, the garden began to empty. The joggers went home, the streetlights flickered on, and still, there was no sign of Sweety.
Ranveer's heart sank. 'Maybe she changed her mind,' he thought, a bitter taste in his mouth. 'Maybe Rank One is all she cares about after all.' By the time the moon was high, Ranveer gave up. He sighed, adjusting his jacket, and started the long walk home, convinced that she had stood him up.
The Temple Confrontation
As he took a shortcut past the old colony temple, he saw a commotion near the entrance steps. His blood ran cold when he recognized the slim figure standing there, clutching her bag tightly.
It was Sweety. But she wasn't alone.
Three boys from their rival school were circling her like vultures. They were laughing, their voices loud and mocking in the quiet night.
"What happened, Topper?" one of them sneered, leaning into her space. "Lost your crown to Ranveer? Looks like the 'Queen of Science' finally fell off her throne. How does it feel to be a loser?"
Sweety's face was pale, her lips trembling, but her eyes remained fierce. Before she could answer, a shadow loomed over the boys.
"Is there a problem here?" Ranveer's voice was low, vibrating with a dangerous edge.
The boys spun around. "Oh, look! It's the new King. What's the matter, Ranveer? You and Sweety were always at each other's throats in school. When did you two start meeting secretly like this?" They burst into a loud, insulting laugh.
Ranveer didn't waste a second. He stepped forward, his eyes burning with a rage he hadn't felt even during the fire. "What Sweety and I do is none of your business. If you don't clear out of here in three seconds, you'll find out exactly how I handle bullies. Move. Now."
The boys looked at Ranveer's clenched fists and the pure fury in his expression. They realized he wasn't joking. Mumbling curses, they scrambled away into the darkness.
Ranveer turned to Sweety, his anger vanishing instantly, replaced by worry.
"Sweety? I waited for you all day at the garden. Why didn't you come?"
"I... I had some work, Ranveer. I was on my way there when these guys blocked my path," she whispered, her voice shaking slightly.
Ranveer felt a wave of guilt. "It's okay. It's late now, and your parents must be waiting. Can you come tomorrow? Same place?"
Sweety looked into his eyes and nodded slowly. "Yes. I'll be there."
The Morning of Truth
The next day, Ranveer reached the garden early, but to his surprise, Sweety was already there. She was sitting on a stone bench, watching the butterflies.
"You're early today!" Ranveer smiled, walking up to her.
"You waited all day for me yesterday,"
Sweety said, looking up at him. "I didn't want you to wait even for a minute today."
Ranveer sat beside her, the air between them thick with unspoken words.
"Sweety, I called you here for two reasons,"
Ranveer began, his voice serious. "First... thank you. Thank you for giving me the chance to be Rank One this year. My name is famous in Bhagat Singh Academy today because of your sacrifice. I am so happy, and I owe it to you."
Sweety smiled, a soft, beautiful smile. "You don't owe me anything, Ranveer. It was my duty."
"Duty? Why?"
"Have you forgotten the fire?" Sweety asked, her eyes softening. "I was falling, paralyzed by fear. You caught me. You carried me out when everyone else was running for their lives. I just wanted to see that same smile of victory on your face one more time. You deserved it."
Ranveer was stunned. "You gave up your rank... for that? Sweety, you have a heart of gold. I don't know how to ever repay you."
The Confession
"You said there were two reasons," Sweety reminded him, her voice barely a whisper. "What is the second one?"
Ranveer felt his heart hammering against his ribs like a drum. He took a deep breath. This was it. No more ranks, no more rivalry, no more hiding.
He slowly sank to one knee on the grass. From his jacket pocket, he pulled out a single, perfect red rose.
"Sweety..." he looked up into her eyes, his soul bared. "I love you. I've loved you since the day you shared your eraser with me in the fifth grade. I fought you in class just so you would notice me. Every mark I scored was a way to stay close to you. I can't hide it anymore."
The garden seemed to go silent. Sweety stood frozen, her breath catching in her throat. They stayed like that for what felt like an eternity, locked in each other's gaze, their worlds colliding.
Suddenly, Sweety turned around. Without saying a word, she began to walk away.
"Sweety! Wait!" Ranveer called out, still on his knee. "Give me an answer! Please!"
Sweety paused at the gate. She looked back one last time, her eyes unreadable, and then vanished into the street without a single word.
Ranveer stood alone in the garden, the red rose still in his hand, wondering if he had just lost his greatest rival—and his only love—forever.
