The night was still, and the moon was playing hide-and-seek behind the clouds as Ranveer walked toward the old mango tree.
His heart was hammering against his ribs, but suddenly, he stopped in his tracks. A thought flashed through his mind—he was going to meet the girl he loved, the girl who had been his world for ten years. How could he go empty-handed?
'I need to give her something special,' he whispered to the night air. 'Something she will remember forever.'
An idea struck him: a mobile phone. It was the perfect bridge for them as they headed toward college. He reached into his pocket to check his cash, but his face fell. He didn't have enough. Without a second thought, Ranveer turned around and sprinted back home. He raided his secret stash—his carefully saved pocket money—and grabbed every last note.
He rushed to the nearest mobile gallery.
"Brother, show me the best phone you have," he panted. After looking through several models, his eyes landed on a sleek, elegant device. It felt right. It looked like something Sweety would carry. He bought it instantly, then ran to another shop to have it wrapped in a beautiful, shimmering gift box.
Now, finally, he was ready.
The Midnight Vigil
Ranveer reached the massive mango tree, breathless and clutching the gift. The area was deserted. The shadows of the branches danced on the ground, but there was no sign of the girl in white.
'She'll come,' he told himself, leaning against the rough bark. 'She called me here.
She won't break my heart.' He couldn't stop smiling. The mere thought of Sweety wanting to meet him at midnight made him feel like he was floating.
Suddenly, a figure approached. Ranveer's heart leaped, but it wasn't Sweety. It was Amit.
"Still alone, Ranveer?" Amit asked, looking around. "Hasn't she arrived yet?"
"Not yet, Amit. I'm just waiting," Ranveer replied, trying to hide his disappointment.
Amit pointed at the box. "Is that for her? What's inside?"
"A phone," Ranveer said proudly. Amit nodded, remembered some urgent work, and left Ranveer back in the silence of the night.
One hour passed. Then another. The silence was starting to feel heavy. Just as doubt began to creep into his mind, he saw a silhouette moving through the darkness. As the figure stepped into a patch of moonlight, Ranveer felt his breath hitch. It was her.
The Union of Two Hearts
Sweety walked up to him, looking slightly out of breath. "Ranveer, I'm so sorry. I'm late... I had a hard time slipping out of the house."
Ranveer's frustration vanished the moment he saw her face. "It's okay, Sweety. For you, I could wait a thousand years."
He couldn't hold it back anymore. He reached behind him and pulled out the shimmering box. "Sweety, this is for you. A small gift."
Sweety looked surprised. "Ranveer, you didn't have to do this. What is it?"
"Open it and see," he urged.
She carefully unwrapped the paper. When she saw the phone, her eyes widened with joy. It was beautiful. "Ranveer, I love it! Thank you so much." Seeing her smile made every bit of his effort worth it.
"I'm glad you like it," Ranveer said softly. "But Sweety... why did you call me here? Why at this hour?"
The air between them grew thick with emotion. Sweety reached into her small bag and pulled out a single, dew-kissed Red Rose. She stepped closer, her eyes locked onto his.
"I didn't answer you that day at the garden because I wanted to be sure," she whispered, handing him the flower. "I wanted to see if you would wait for me. I wanted to know if your heart was as steady as your grades. Ranveer... I love you too."
Ranveer didn't say a word. He didn't need to. He took the rose, and in the next second, he pulled her into a tight, fierce embrace. Sweety wrapped her arms around him, burying her face in his chest. In that moment, the rivalry was dead. The competition was over. They were no longer 'Rank One' and 'Rank Two'—they were just two souls who had finally found home in each other's arms.
They stayed like that for a long time, lost in the magic of their shared heartbeat. But just as the world seemed perfect, a sudden sound broke the silence.
Something happened that neither Ranveer nor Sweety had ever expected.
