Kaito and Zac traveled deep into the southern reaches of the country, a region whispered about in legends as a sanctuary for witchcraft and the ancient heart of folk healing.
"Where are we?" Kaito asked. He looked out over a breathtaking coastline where the turquoise water lapped against pristine white sand.
"This is a place my kind visits when we are in need of aid," Zac explained, his eyes scanning the horizon. "It is also exactly where you will find what you are looking for."
Kaito's lips curled into a predatory smile. "A young witch."
The Village of Shadows
In a small, vibrant community nearby, the air was filled with the sounds of laughter and preparation. The village was buzzing as everyone geared up for the upcoming fiesta. Elders gossiped while they worked, and children ran errands for their parents—all except for a young girl named Guada.
Guada lived in a small, weathered hut with her only companion, a gray cat she named Abo. Since the tragic death of her parents, she had lived a quiet, solitary life. Though a woman named Meryl—a close friend of her mother—had offered to adopt her, Guada refused to leave. She couldn't bring herself to abandon the house where her parents' memories still lingered.
"Good morning, Guada," Meryl said, approaching the hut. She noticed the girl sitting quietly on the steps. "Why do you look so sad, dear?"
"Tomorrow is the festival," Guada replied, her voice small. "That was the day the intruders from the city killed them."
Meryl went silent, the weight of the tragedy pressing down on her. She reached out, wanting to offer comfort, but the words felt stuck in her throat.
"Tita Meryl, let me help you with that bayong," Guada said, forcing a brave smile as she reached for the large woven bag Meryl was carrying.
Note: A Bayong is a traditional Filipino utility bag made from dried leaves (like buri or pandan). It is prized in rural areas for being both versatile and durable, used by farmers and fishermen alike.
"You are far too young to carry such a burden, Guada," Meryl sighed, handing her the bag. "But I promise you, I will protect you with my life. I swore it at your parents' grave."
As they began to pick ripe tomatoes in Meryl's garden, the older woman tried one more time. "Are you sure you won't move into my house? Staying here alone only feeds your sadness."
"I'm okay, Tita. Really," Guada insisted, glancing toward Abo, who was sunning himself nearby. "I have Abo to keep me company."
Meryl sighed, watching the young girl work. Guada was smiling, but Meryl could see the cracks in the mask; the girl was trying to be strong so that no one else would have to worry about her.
THE CLIMB UP MOUNT SAN CRISTOBAL
The air grew thin and chilly as the group ascended the rugged trails of the mountain. Around them, the dense foliage seemed to whisper, the trees twisting in strange, unnatural shapes.
"I'm exhausted! My feet are literally cracking!" Jasmine complained, pausing to lean against a mossy boulder.
Jin Ae glanced down and sighed. "Who told you to wear slippers for a mountain climb, Jas?"
"Hey! Don't underestimate these," Jasmine defended, pointing at her colorful flip-flops. "I saw an ad on TV saying they're durable enough for anything. Besides, they're fashionable. You have to look good, even in the wilderness."
"Where exactly is the 'fashion,' Jas?" Catherine asked, suppressing a smirk. "You're wearing a heavy winter jacket, rugged climbing pants... and then flip-flops? That's not a look; that's a disaster. Plus, I've heard stories about the Tikbalang of this mountain. They say they love snatching women between twenty-three and twenty-five—specifically the ones wearing slippers."
Jasmine froze, her eyes widening. "Wait... I'm twenty-four. You're saying I'm a prime candidate?"
"Oh, absolutely," Jin Ae said, her face perfectly serious. "You're basically a gift-wrapped snack for a horse-demon."
"That's just a legend... mostly," Baekhyun added, though his eyes were scanning the treeline instead of looking at them.
"Gosh! Oh no! Absolutely not!" Jasmine scrambled to open her backpack. She dug past her snacks and mirrors until she pulled out a pair of sturdy hiking boots she had bought in town. "Change of plans! Fashion is dead!"
As Jasmine frantically shoved her feet into the shoes, the playful atmosphere vanished. Jin Ae's posture stiffened, her hand moving instinctively toward the hilt of her dagger.
"Wait," Jin Ae whispered, her voice cold. "I sense something. There's a creature nearby. Close."
"Jin Ae, stop it! This isn't funny anymore!" Jasmine hissed, fumbling with her laces.
But it wasn't a joke. High above them, perched on a thick branch obscured by the mountain mist, a pair of glowing eyes watched their every move, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
THE FOREST OF SELVAGE
Before Ethan and Aki stepped into the dark canopy of Selvage, Lola Amelia held them back one last time. The air felt heavy, as if the forest itself were holding its breath.
"You must be careful," Amelia warned, her eyes searching Ethan's face. "I cannot be certain if the Nogitsune's curse has fully taken hold of Calista. If she attacks you, Apo... please, find a way to restrain her. Do not hurt her."
"I understand, Lola. I promise," Ethan replied softly.
"Don't worry, Lola Amelia," Aki added, stepping closer to Ethan with a confident grin. "I'll take good care of my best friend."
"Best friend?" Amelia teased, a small, knowing smirk playing on her lips. "Is that what they're calling it these days?"
"Lola!" Ethan groaned, his face turning a deep shade of red. Beside him, Aki looked away, his own ears twitching with embarrassment.
"Enough teasing," Amelia said, her expression turning grave. She handed them a heavy, silver-etched charm. "Take this amulet for protection. The creatures in Selvage are not like the ones you know. They are hungry, and they serve a dark master."
THE CAVE OF SIGBINS
Meanwhile, on the misty slopes of Mount San Cristobal, Baekhyun led his team to the mouth of a jagged limestone cave. The entrance looked like a gaping maw, exhaling a cold, damp draft.
"This is it," Jin Ae said, consultng the map she held. "Exactly where the White Dove leaders told us the Sigbins would be nesting."
Jasmine paused, her nose wrinkling as she sniffed the air. "Wait a minute... something is wrong."
"She's right," Catherine added, her eyes narrowing as she scanned the surrounding rocks. "It's too quiet. This feels like a trap."
"Your instincts are sharp," Baekhyun said, his hand already on the hilt of his sword. "Something is definitely fishy. Girls, arm yourselves!"
The group moved with practiced precision. Jin Ae reached into her bag and pulled out her latest invention—a mechanical device humming with blue energy.
Catherine, however, reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, weathered notebook.
"Seriously, Monday?" Jin Ae hissed, eyes wide. "Are you going to write a poem right now? Put the book away and use this dagger! Luckily, I grabbed an extra one from Lennard's father."
Catherine took the blade, offering a silent nod. Her secret—that her "book" was actually her source of witchcraft—remained safe for now.
Jasmine, meanwhile, pulled a long, intricately carved wooden pipe from her gear. "The weather-pipe from my cousin," she whispered.
No sooner had she gripped it than the atmosphere shifted. A sudden, violent gust of wind shrieked through the trees, nearly knocking them off their feet. The hunt had begun, but they weren't the ones doing the hunting.
THE RAID ON THE SOUTH
The village was alive with the sound of music and laughter, but inside her quiet hut, Guada watched from the shadows. The joy of the festival felt like a distant dream she wasn't allowed to join.
"Guada, why are you hiding?" Meryl asked, stepping into the small room. "The villagers are asking for you. They don't want you sitting here alone."
"I'm okay, Tita Meryl," Guada replied with a small, sad smile.
The peace was shattered by a deafening explosion. They rushed to the window, gasping at the nightmare unfolding in the square. A man with fox ears and a suffocating dark aura stood amidst the smoke, flanked by a warrior with fins and gills, wielding a jagged trident that shimmered with deep-ocean magic.
"Who are they?" Guada whispered, her voice trembling.
"The treaty..." Meryl breathed, her eyes wide with horror. "The Mermen have violated the peace treaty with Inspector Red. And he brought a Nogitsune into our lands."
Meryl didn't hesitate. Her body shifted, her arms becoming wings as she transformed into a great bird to defend her people.
"Tita Meryl, wait!" Guada cried. She scrambled toward the door but was cut off by her cat, Abo.
"Guada, stop!" the cat commanded. His voice was no longer a simple meow, but a stern, telepathic warning. "Those creatures are beyond your level. Your training is incomplete. Stay back!"
The Battle of the Elements
Meryl landed between the villagers and the invaders, her wings beating back the smoke. With a sharp wave of her hands, she sent a gale-force wind screaming toward Kaito and Zac.
"Merman! You risk a war with the Inspectors!" Meryl shouted. She looked at Zac and realized his eyes were glazed—he wasn't acting of his own will. "Nogitsune, release him!"
Meryl threw a burst of shimmering light at Zac to break the possession, but the spell dissolved the moment it touched a glowing stone hanging from the merman's neck.
"Oops," Kaito smirked, his dark energy flaring. "Your little tricks won't work against a Merman's Talisman, my lady."
"What do you want?" Meryl demanded, her hands glowing as she prepared another strike. "Leave this village!"
"Give me the young witch so I can regain my full power," Kaito replied, his eyes landing on the huts behind her.
"Never! Earth, release your roots! Protect us!" Meryl cried. The ground groaned and split, massive, vine-like roots erupting to crush the invaders. But as they lunged, Zac raised his talisman. A wave of salt-heavy energy washed over the plants, turning the lush roots into dry, brittle dust in seconds.
"Mistress, the talisman is too strong!" another witch leader, Kaia, shouted as she ran to Meryl's side.
"Together then!" Meryl commanded. They linked hands, their voices rising in a rhythmic chant. "From air to earth, from earth to fire, from fire to water... we command the elements to—"
They never finished. Zac thrust his trident forward, summoning a massive sphere of seawater that spiraled around the witches. It wasn't just water; it was an anti-magic baptism. The salt and sea pressure drained their strength, collapsing their circles.
"Tita Meryl!" Guada screamed as she watched her mentor fall, her consciousness fading as the water stole her light.
"Guada, no! Run!" Meryl gasped before going limp.
Kaito turned his head, his gaze locking onto Guada. A slow, terrifying smile spread across his face. "Hello, little one."
Guada froze, paralyzed by the cold malice in his eyes. Before he could move, Abo leaped from the shadows, claws out, aiming for the Nogitsune's throat. Kaito didn't even flinch. He flicked a finger, and a bolt of black lightning slammed into the cat, throwing him across the dirt.
"Abo!" Guada shrieked.
"Run, Guada..." the cat rasped, struggling to stand. "Save yourself!"
THE MANSION IN THE MIST
Ethan and Aki pushed through the thicket, finally stepping into a clearing where a massive, gothic mansion loomed over the trees. It looked out of place in the wild forest—beautiful, yet eerily silent.
"Gosh, look at that place!" Ethan breathed, mesmerized by the stone walls and towering spires.
"I hope your mom is in there," Aki said, his eyes scanning the windows for movement. "If Nana Amelia was right and she's under a curse, I'll be the one to break it. I won't let her stay a prisoner."
"You shouldn't be here."
The cold voice made them both jump. They spun around to find a familiar figure standing in the shadows.
"Daisuke?" Aki gasped.
Daisuke stepped forward, his expression grim and urgent. "Akihiko, Ethan... turn back now. For your own safety, stay away from this mansion."
THE GUARDIAN OF THE CAVE
High on Mount San Cristobal, the wind howled as a massive silhouette emerged from the trees. It was a man of gargantuan proportions, sitting on a high branch and holding a glowing, oversized tobacco pipe. The smell of thick, herbal smoke filled the air.
"Stay away from this sanctuary," the giant growled, his voice like grinding stones. "Hunters are not welcome here."
"What on earth is that?" Jasmine squeaked, hiding behind her bag.
"He's a Kapre," Catherine whispered. Her hands began to glow with a faint, steady light as she prepared for the worst.
"Stay behind me, girls!" Baekhyun commanded, drawing his sword. The Kapre blew a thick cloud of smoke toward them, a warning that the "peace" of the mountain was about to end.
THE PUPPET MASTER OF THE SOUTH
Back in the ruined village, Kaito and Zac closed in on Guada. Meryl lay unconscious nearby, having blown a desperate, silver whistle just before her strength failed.
"Surrender, young witch," Kaito sneered, his dark aura flickering. "Give me your blood, and I might let the rest of these people live."
"Never!" Guada shouted.
"Surrender now!" Zac added, his voice hollow. Guada narrowed her eyes, noticing that Zac's eyes were fixed and glassy. She looked closer, seeing something no one else could—faint, shimmering threads of energy connecting Kaito and Zac to the air around them.
Puppet threads.
Guada reached out, her fingers dancing through the empty air. She snatched the invisible lines, wrapping them expertly around her small fingers.
"The Puppet Stage..." a villager whispered in awe. "That is forbidden magic for one so young. It's too dangerous!"
"If only we could help her," another woman cried, "but the Nogitsune's force has us pinned! Look—she's using the whistle's signal to call the Sigbinan!"
Guada's fear vanished, replaced by a cold, playful focus. She yanked the threads hard. "Now... why don't you say 'hi'?"
She began to laugh as Kaito's arm suddenly jerked upward against his will. His legs began to kick in a rhythmic, ridiculous dance.
"What is this? How are you doing this?" Kaito demanded, his face contorting in rage as his own body refused to obey him. Guada just smiled, her fingers moving like a master musician, making the powerful Nogitsune and the Merman dance like dolls in the dirt.
