Chapter 3 - The Fear of Tomorrow

Elena didn't sleep.

She couldn't.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw it again—

The red timer.

The words.

[Next Death Countdown: 23:59:59]

Now it was less.

Much less.

Ticking.

Relentless.

Like a reminder that her life… was no longer hers.

She sat on the edge of her bed, knees pulled to her chest.

Her room felt different.

Smaller.

Colder.

Unsafe.

"This isn't real…" she whispered.

But her voice trembled.

Because deep down—

She knew it was.

Her fingers tightened around the blanket.

"If I just ignore it… maybe it'll go away…"

Silence answered her.

Then—

[22:13:07]

The timer flickered in front of her eyes.

Mocking her.

Her chest tightened.

"I'm going to die again…"

The words slipped out before she could stop them.

And suddenly—

She felt it.

Fear.

Not the kind that disappears after a moment.

Not the kind you can laugh off.

This was different.

This was heavy.

It sat in her chest, squeezing her lungs, whispering things she didn't want to hear.

You won't survive this time.

Elena shook her head violently.

"No… no, I survived once… I can do it again…"

But even she didn't sound convinced.

Her hands trembled.

"What if I can't…?"

The thought hit harder than anything else.

Because this time—

She knew it was coming.

She knew exactly when.

Exactly how close it was.

And that made it worse.

Way worse.

Tears burned in her eyes.

"I don't want to die…"

Her voice cracked.

"I haven't even done anything yet…"

Her dreams.

Her future.

Everything she thought she had—

Now reduced to a countdown.

She let out a shaky breath.

"Is this… what dying feels like?"

Waiting.

Knowing.

Helpless.

Her chest hurt.

Not physically—

But something deeper.

Something human.

Something fragile.

"I'm scared…"

The words were barely a whisper.

But they felt heavy.

Real.

For the first time—

Elena wasn't thinking about the system.

Or the man.

Or the mystery.

She was thinking about herself.

About how much she wanted to live.

And how little control she had.

Her phone buzzed suddenly.

The sound made her flinch.

She grabbed it quickly, almost desperately.

A message.

From her best friend.

"Hey, are you okay? You didn't reply yesterday."

Elena stared at the screen.

Her vision blurred.

Normal.

Everything looked so normal.

As if nothing had changed.

As if she wasn't counting down to her death.

Her fingers hovered over the keyboard.

What should she say?

I'm going to die in less than a day?

She let out a weak laugh.

"Yeah… that sounds crazy…"

But it was true.

And she was alone with it.

Completely alone.

Her chest tightened again.

"I don't want to be alone…"

The realization hit her harder than fear.

Because dying wasn't the only thing that scared her.

It was dying… without anyone knowing.

Without anyone remembering.

Without anyone there.

Tears slipped down her cheeks.

Silently.

"I don't want to disappear…"

Her grip on the phone tightened.

Then—

Something strange happened.

The screen flickered.

Just for a second.

Elena froze.

"What…?"

Then—

Another message appeared.

But this time—

Not from her friend.

[Tip: Avoid crowded places.]

Her breath caught.

"What is this…?"

The message didn't have a sender.

No number.

Nothing.

Just words.

Cold.

Direct.

Real.

Her heart started racing again.

"Is this… the system?"

Or something else?

Her mind spun.

If it was telling the truth—

Then her death wasn't random.

It could be avoided.

Her fingers trembled.

"I… I can survive this…"

For the first time since last night—

A small spark appeared inside her chest.

Hope.

Weak.

Fragile.

But there.

"I just need to figure it out…"

Her eyes slowly lifted.

Determined.

Afraid.

But no longer frozen.

"I'm not going to die again."

The timer continued.

Unstoppable.

But now—

Elena was moving too.
