Chapter 26 - DESCENT INTO THE SHADOWS

Chapter 26 – Descent into Shadows

The echo of clashing weapons still lingered over the docks. The first wave of the boss's men lay scattered, some groaning, others unmoving, their corrupted energy dissipating slowly into the night air. The boss himself, dark aura flickering across his arms, leaned against a support beam, breathing heavy but unbroken.

Ryan's eyes scanned the area, every pulse and vibration of energy mapping the battlefield. The corrupted pockets of energy below the docks pulsed faintly, almost like the heartbeat of the harbor itself. The water still reflected only darkness, swallowing light, hiding whatever lay beneath.

Sikong crouched slightly, spear tip tapping the wooden planks. "They're not telling us everything," he muttered, voice low. "Whatever's down there… it's bigger than just this guy."

Ryan didn't answer immediately. Instead, he advanced toward the boss, the Meridian Ignition energy coursing along his limbs, heightening his senses. He could feel the flow of the corrupted energy below, its unnatural rhythm pulling subtly at the edges of his awareness. The boss, realizing he could no longer rely on intimidation alone, straightened.

"You think capturing my men… or even me… gives you answers?" the boss sneered. "You have no idea what you're meddling with."

Ryan's gaze hardened. "I'll find out anyway."

The boss let out a bitter laugh, the sound echoing against the empty docks. Then, with a wave of his hand, the remaining energy around him flared, forming jagged black tendrils. His men who remained conscious lurched forward, but Sikong met them head-on, spear spinning in Twin Shadow Strikes, Flowing Shadow, keeping them at bay with precise, deadly strikes. Each movement created afterimages, confusing and scattering the attackers.

One man swung a corrupted blade, energy crackling along its edge. Sikong feinted with Phantom Feint, letting the attacker strike air, then spun low, striking a joint in the man's armor, sending him sprawling into the darkness. Another attempted to flank him, only to be met with a rapid Thousand Shadow Flurry, spear tip after spear tip slicing a rhythm across the wooden planks.

Meanwhile, Ryan pressed the boss, moving fluidly with Blood Resonance. Every strike and feint flowed naturally into the next. He advanced, step by step, Shadow Step allowing him to vanish briefly before striking again with Flowing Edge, testing the boss's guard. Dark energy met his attacks, but Ryan could feel weaknesses in the formations of his aura, the subtle shifts in posture revealing openings.

The boss hissed, energy flaring in a chaotic burst. "Enough!" He gestured sharply, and the tendrils withdrew, curling back into him like living shadows. "Fine. You want answers?" He leaned closer, voice low, almost conspiratorial. "There's… a facility beneath this harbor. Not here on the docks, not in plain sight… but hidden. Cultivators brought here, used for rituals. Feeding something… something older than even I understand."

Ryan's eyes narrowed, sensing the depth of his words. "Where?"

The boss's gaze flicked toward the water, the faint ripples hiding the truth. "There's an access point… a hatch, beneath the farthest pier. It leads down to the lower tunnels. Follow the currents… and you will find the source."

Sikong's grip tightened on his spear. "This… this isn't just about trade or control. They're experimenting… using cultivators."

Ryan nodded, absorbing the energy readings Nano transmitted. The corrupted pockets matched the boss's description: concentrated, feeding a larger, unknown source below the harbor. His mind traced the threads, each hint connecting to missing cultivators, ships gone, and the blackened water.

The boss smirked, dark energy dimming slightly. "Go ahead… if you survive the descent, maybe you'll see what lies beneath. But be warned—nothing down there is human anymore."

Ryan's pulse remained steady. "We'll see."

Sikong glanced at the hatch, then back at Ryan. "You ready?"

Ryan's eyes swept the area one last time. "Always."

The duo approached the hatch. Nano floated ahead, scanning every corner, every shadow. As they pried it open, a faint draft of cold, damp air escaped. The stench of corruption was stronger here, almost tangible, like the harbor itself exhaled something forbidden.

Ryan lowered himself first, stepping onto a narrow, rusted ladder. The wooden planks groaned under each careful step. Sikong followed, spear angled to detect any hidden traps or ambushes. The boss's words echoed in Ryan's mind: nothing down there is human anymore.

Below, the tunnel opened into a dimly lit corridor. Strange markings lined the walls, faintly glowing with corrupted energy. Small chains hung from hooks along the stone, and the air was thick with the pulse of restrained cultivators. The faint hum of magic, twisted and unnatural, vibrated underfoot.

Nano's lights swept across the corridor. "Energy signatures detected. High density. Corruption concentrated. Unknown entities present."

Ryan's jaw tightened. He felt it—the same faint connection from before. Not fully realized, not yet. But somewhere, beyond the tunnel, something vast was feeding this corruption. Something patient. Something watching.

"This is only the beginning," Ryan muttered, stepping forward. "Whatever is down here… we'll find it."

And with that, the descent into the heart of Black Tide Harbor began, shadows and corruption closing in around them, every step pulling them deeper into the unknown.
