Chapter 8 - System Interference

The world held its breath.

Kai stood frozen, shards suspended midair like insects caught in amber. The entity watched him with quiet amusement, its presence bending the air around them.

Kai forced himself to breathe.

Think.

Move.

Anything.

System.

No response.

That alone made his pulse spike.

"…Hey," Kai muttered under his breath. "Don't tell me you're actually scared right now."

A flicker.

"Correction.""System response unstable."

Kai's eyes sharpened.

"…So you can respond."

The entity tilted its head slightly, amused.

"You speak to it like a partner," it said. "That's… interesting."

Kai ignored it. His focus stayed on the System.

"What do I do?" he asked silently. "Give me something."

A pause.

Then—

"Host, survival requires compliance."

Kai's jaw tightened.

"…Compliance?" he whispered. "Since when do I follow orders blindly?"

The entity chuckled softly.

"Good question."

It stepped closer, and with each step, the pressure on the environment increased. The frozen shards trembled, resisting… barely.

Kai could feel it now.

This thing wasn't just powerful.

It was above the rules he understood.

The System flickered again.

Then—

A new notification.

"Secondary Objective Initiated."

Kai frowned.

"…Secondary?"

"Directive: Survive encounter.""Directive: Observe entity capabilities."

Kai blinked.

"…Observe?"

So now the System wanted… data?

The entity smiled wider.

"There it is," it said. "That hesitation. That moment where you realize you're not just being guided… you're being used."

Kai's eyes narrowed.

"…Used?"

The System responded immediately.

"Clarification: Host is an asset."

Silence.

That word landed harder than any attack.

An asset.

Not a hero.

Not a chosen one.

Just… something to be used.

Kai exhaled slowly.

"…Yeah," he muttered. "That's new."

The entity's gaze sharpened.

"Oh?" it said. "You didn't know?"

Kai's mind raced.

If this thing knew more than the System… then the rules weren't just hidden.

They were different depending on who was looking.

Kai tested something.

Very carefully.

"…System," he said, loud enough for both of them to hear. "If I attack it… will I die?"

A pause.

Longer this time.

The entity's smile faded slightly.

And then—

"Unknown."

Kai froze.

The System had just admitted something it didn't know.

Or worse—

Something it wasn't allowed to answer.

The entity let out a soft laugh.

"There it is," it said. "Even your System hesitates when it faces something beyond its design."

Kai's fists clenched.

His shards trembled again.

This time—

Not frozen.

Just… waiting.

Kai's voice dropped.

"…So what are you?"

The entity stepped forward, stopping just outside striking range.

"I am what your System fears becoming," it said.

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Final.

Then—

Its eyes flicked to the mark on Kai's arm.

"And you…" it murmured, "…are already closer to that than you think."

Kai's breath slowed.

"…What does that mean?"

The entity's smile returned.

Wider this time.

Sharper.

"Simple."

It raised its hand.

The air around Kai shifted—not stopping him this time, but probing.

Testing.

The shards flickered.

The System screamed in his mind—

"WARNING—AUTHORITY BREACH ATTEMPT DETECTED—"

The entity spoke one last time.

"You're not just a host…"

"…you're a doorway."

And then—

Everything released at once.

Kai dropped to one knee, gasping as control returned to his shards. The pressure vanished like it never existed.

The entity stood there, calm.

Watching.

Then it turned slightly, as if losing interest.

"…Interesting."

A pause.

Then a final glance at Kai.

"I'll be back when you're worth taking seriously."

And with that—

It vanished.

No movement.

No sound.

Just… gone.

Silence returned.

Kai remained on one knee, breathing hard, shards slowly settling around him.

The girl stepped forward cautiously.

"What… was that?" she whispered.

Kai didn't answer immediately.

His gaze was fixed on his arm.

On the mark.

On the System.

Because now—

He wasn't just being watched.

He was being evaluated.

And somewhere out there…

Something was waiting for him to grow.

Or break.
