Chapter 10 - A System Within the System

The ruins felt different now.

Not quieter.

Not calmer.

Just… observed.

Kai stood still, the mark on his arm pulsing faintly. The shards hovered around him, but this time, even they felt uncertain—like they were listening for something beyond his command.

The girl stayed close.

Too close.

As if distance itself wasn't safe anymore.

Kai's eyes flickered.

"…System."

A pause.

Longer than usual.

"…Yes, Host."

Kai narrowed his eyes.

"…Show me everything."

Silence.

Then—

"…Clarification required."

Kai exhaled slowly.

"…Don't play games with me."

The air shifted.

Not physically.

But internally.

Like the System was recalculating its relationship with him.

Kai's voice dropped.

"…You said there are things I'm not allowed to see."

Another pause.

Then—

"…Correct."

Kai nodded slightly.

"…Then override that."

Silence.

A long one.

The kind that felt like resistance.

Then—

"…Request denied."

Kai smirked faintly.

"…So there are limits."

The System didn't respond.

But Kai already felt it.

Pressure.

Testing.

Watching.

He clenched his fist.

"…Good."

The System flickered.

"…Host intent escalated."

Kai looked up toward the ruins.

"…You want to keep secrets?"

His voice was calm.

Almost too calm.

"…Fine."

He took a step forward.

The shards followed.

"…Then I'll find them myself."

And that's when it happened.

The mark on his arm pulsed violently.

Kai froze.

His eyes widened.

"…What—"

ERROR.

The System glitched.

Not once.

Not twice.

But repeatedly.

ERROR. ERROR. ERROR.

Kai staggered.

"What's happening?" the girl asked, alarmed.

Kai didn't answer.

Because something else was happening.

Something… inside the System.

Then—

A second voice appeared.

Not in the air.

Not outside.

But inside his mind.

Clear.

Cold.

Different.

"Host recognized."

Kai's breath caught.

"…What?"

The girl grabbed his sleeve. "Kai—your arm—!"

The mark on his skin split slightly, revealing a faint glow beneath the surface.

Not from the System interface he knew.

Something deeper.

Something hidden.

The System spoke again.

But this time—

It didn't sound alone.

"Unauthorized access detected."

Kai's eyes widened.

"…Unauthorized?"

The second voice responded immediately.

"Correction.""This access is authorized."

Silence.

Heavy.

Crushing.

Kai slowly looked at his System interface.

"…There's… another one."

The girl froze.

"What do you mean—another one?"

Kai swallowed.

Because now he understood.

The System he knew…

Was just the surface.

The second voice continued, calm and precise:

"Host Kai has exceeded initial parameters.""Initiating synchronization protocol."

Kai's heart raced.

"…Synchronization?" he whispered.

The System he knew responded immediately.

"WARNING: External System presence detected."

Kai's breath hitched.

"…External?"

The second voice didn't deny it.

Didn't hesitate.

It simply stated:

"You have been selected."

Kai froze.

"…Selected… for what?"

A pause.

Then—

The answer came.

Quiet.

Final.

And far more dangerous than anything before.

"To become the bridge."

The girl stepped back, fear written all over her face.

"…Kai…?"

Kai didn't move.

Couldn't move.

Because for the first time since this began…

He realized something terrifying.

He wasn't just being watched.

He wasn't just being used.

He was being claimed.

And somewhere beyond this world…

Something else had just noticed him.
