Chapter 18 - Eyes within the Darkness

The forest no longer felt like a place of nature.

It felt alive.

But not in the way Nyx had grown used to.

This was different.

The air had thickened, heavy and suffocating, as though something unseen had wrapped itself around the trees, the ground, even the wind itself. The faint rustling of leaves had stopped completely, replaced by an eerie stillness that pressed against the senses.

Nyx stood unmoving, his gaze fixed ahead.

Kael shifted slightly beside him, his usual confidence dimmed, replaced by sharp caution. "Yeah… I don't like this," he muttered under his breath.

Nyx didn't respond.

Because he was listening.

Not with his ears.

But with everything else.

The presence that had revealed itself moments ago was no longer hiding. It lingered all around them now, stretching through the shadows like an invisible web. Multiple sources. Multiple entities.

Watching.

Waiting.

"You're quiet," Kael said, his voice low. "That usually means something bad is about to happen."

Nyx's lips moved slightly. "…They're not rushing."

Kael frowned. "And that's worse?"

"Yes."

A faint sound echoed through the forest.

Not a footstep.

Not movement.

Something… dragging.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Kael's eyes snapped toward the sound. "There."

Nyx saw it too.

At first, it was just a shape between the trees.

Then it moved.

And the illusion broke.

It was a figure.

Humanoid.

But wrong.

Its limbs bent unnaturally, its movements jerking slightly as if it were not fully in control of its own body. Its head tilted at an angle no human could hold for long, and its eyes—

Glowed faintly.

Kael took a step back. "…That's not human."

Nyx's gaze hardened. "No."

Another shape appeared.

Then another.

And another.

From all directions.

The darkness wasn't hiding them anymore.

It was revealing them.

"…So this is what it meant," Nyx murmured.

Kael clenched his fists. "You're telling me there's more of them?"

Nyx didn't answer directly.

Because the answer was obvious.

"Yes," Kael said quietly to himself. "Of course there is…"

The first creature stepped closer, its movements uneven, like something learning how to walk again. Its mouth opened slightly, and when it spoke—

The voice didn't match its body.

"You… don't belong…"

Nyx stepped forward.

Calm.

Unshaken.

"Neither do you."

The creature twitched.

Then laughed.

A broken, distorted sound.

"Still… calm…"

Its head tilted further.

"Even now…"

Kael moved slightly closer to Nyx. "…You've got a plan, right?"

Nyx's eyes remained fixed ahead.

"I'm thinking."

Kael blinked. "You're thinking?!"

Nyx ignored him.

Because now—

He understood something.

These things weren't just attacking.

They were observing.

Just like he had been.

Studying.

Testing.

The first creature lunged.

Fast.

Far faster than its broken form suggested.

Kael reacted instantly, stepping forward with a sharp movement, his energy flaring as he intercepted the attack with a powerful strike.

The impact echoed through the forest.

The creature was knocked back—but not destroyed.

It landed awkwardly, limbs twisting, then slowly rose again.

Kael's expression tightened. "…It didn't go down."

Nyx moved.

This time, he didn't wait.

He stepped forward, his presence shifting subtly, the air around him growing heavier.

The creature lunged again—

But Nyx was already there.

His hand shot forward, gripping its face mid-motion.

The impact stopped instantly.

The creature struggled, its body jerking violently, but Nyx's grip didn't move.

"…You're not like the one before," Nyx said quietly.

The creature laughed again, even as it struggled.

"We… are many…"

Nyx's eyes flickered.

"…I can see that."

Then—

He pressed down.

Not with brute force.

But with something deeper.

The creature's body convulsed as dark energy surged outward, reacting violently to Nyx's presence.

"…Again," Nyx murmured.

The same energy.

The same foreign presence.

But stronger this time.

More stable.

More aware.

Kael stepped back slightly, watching carefully. "…You're doing that thing again."

Nyx didn't respond.

Because this time—

He wasn't just removing it.

He was studying it.

The energy resisted him, pushing back, trying to escape his control.

"…Interesting," Nyx said softly.

The creature screamed—

A high-pitched, unnatural sound.

Then—

It shattered.

Not physically.

But energetically.

The dark presence burst outward, dissipating into the air like smoke.

The body dropped.

Lifeless.

Silence fell again.

But only for a second.

Because the others—

Didn't retreat.

They stepped forward.

All of them.

Kael exhaled sharply. "…Yeah, that's not good."

Nyx stood still, his gaze sweeping across them.

Counting.

Measuring.

"…Seven," he said.

Kael blinked. "You counted?"

"Yes."

Kael let out a short breath. "Of course you did."

The creatures surrounded them slowly, their movements uneven but coordinated in a strange way. Not chaotic.

Not random.

Deliberate.

"They're learning," Nyx said.

Kael's grip tightened. "Yeah, I noticed."

One of the creatures spoke again.

"You… are different…"

Nyx didn't deny it.

"Yes."

A pause.

Then—

"Come… with us…"

Kael frowned. "That's new."

Nyx's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…No."

The creatures tilted their heads in unison.

"Then… you break…"

Kael smirked slightly despite the situation. "Yeah, I figured that was coming."

Nyx took a step forward.

And this time—

He didn't hold back as much.

The air shifted.

Subtly.

But enough.

The creatures paused.

Just for a moment.

"…Now," Nyx said quietly.

Kael didn't hesitate.

He moved instantly, launching himself toward the nearest creature, his attacks faster and sharper than before.

Nyx moved as well.

But differently.

Where Kael attacked with force—

Nyx moved with precision.

Each movement calculated.

Each strike deliberate.

A creature lunged—

Nyx sidestepped, striking its center, disrupting its balance before it could react.

Another came from behind—

He turned, catching it mid-motion and slamming it into the ground with controlled force.

Kael glanced over briefly. "…You make that look too easy!"

Nyx didn't respond.

Because he wasn't focused on the fight.

He was focused on the pattern.

The way they moved.

The way they reacted.

The way their energy shifted.

"…There," he murmured.

Kael shouted, "What?!"

Nyx's eyes sharpened.

"They're connected."

Kael froze for half a second. "Connected how?!"

Nyx didn't explain.

Instead—

He moved faster.

His body blurred slightly as he closed the distance between two of the creatures.

Then—

He struck both at once.

Not physically.

But energetically.

The reaction was immediate.

Both creatures froze.

Then—

Collapsed.

At the same time.

Kael's eyes widened. "…No way."

Nyx stepped back slightly.

"…It's not just possession," he said.

Kael turned toward him. "Then what is it?"

Nyx's expression darkened slightly.

"…It's a network."

The word hung in the air.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Kael exhaled slowly. "…That's worse."

Nyx didn't disagree.

Because if they were connected—

Then something else…

Was controlling them.

And that something—

Was still out there.

Watching.

Waiting.

Learning.

Nyx's gaze lifted toward the deeper parts of the forest.

"…Now I'm certain," he said quietly.

Kael frowned. "Certain about what?"

Nyx's voice dropped slightly.

"This isn't over."

And somewhere—

Far beyond their sight—

Something listened.
