Chapter 17 - A glimpse of the unknown

The night did not return to normal.

Even after the dark presence had been forced out, something lingered in the air. It was subtle, almost unnoticeable to most, but to Nyx, it was like a faint echo that refused to fade. The kind of presence that did not belong to this world.

The fallen guard lay unconscious on the ground, his chest rising and falling unevenly. Around him, the patrol unit stood frozen, their eyes shifting between him and Nyx, uncertainty written clearly across their faces.

No one spoke.

No one moved.

Until—

"What… what just happened?" one of the guards finally asked, his voice barely steady.

The patrol leader stepped forward cautiously, his gaze fixed on Nyx. "You," he said, his tone sharp but controlled. "Explain yourself."

Kael exhaled slowly beside Nyx. "…Yeah. I'd like that too."

Nyx didn't look at them immediately. His eyes remained on the unconscious guard, his expression unreadable, as if he were still analyzing something deeper than what had just occurred.

"…It wasn't him," Nyx said finally.

The leader frowned. "We can see that. But what was it?"

Nyx's gaze lifted slightly, scanning the darkness beyond the patrol route. The forest, the shadows, the distant edges of Raizen territory.

"It was something foreign," he said. "Something that doesn't belong in this world."

A murmur spread among the guards.

"Another spirit?"

"No… that felt different…"

Kael crossed his arms slowly. "You're saying this isn't a guardian spirit?"

Nyx shook his head. "No."

The word landed heavily.

"Guardian spirits don't behave like that," he continued. "They bond. They guide. They don't… invade."

The patrol leader's expression tightened. "Then what are we dealing with?"

Nyx was silent for a moment.

And in that silence—

He thought.

Not just about what he had seen.

But what he had felt.

The energy had been chaotic, yes—but not in the same way as raw power. It was unstable, invasive, almost parasitic. It clung to the host rather than flowing with it.

And more importantly—

It had recognized him.

"…Something aware," Nyx said quietly.

Kael frowned. "Aware?"

"It spoke," Nyx added. "It reacted. It knew I was there before I revealed myself."

The guards shifted uneasily.

"That's not normal…"

"Spirits don't do that…"

The patrol leader clenched his jaw. "Then this is bigger than we thought."

Nyx finally turned to face them fully.

"Yes," he said. "It is."

Silence followed again.

He could see it in their eyes now.

Fear.

Not the kind that came from facing a stronger opponent.

But the kind that came from not understanding what they were up against.

Kael ran a hand through his hair. "…So what now?"

Nyx's gaze sharpened slightly.

"Now… we find out where it came from."

The patrol leader scoffed lightly. "And how exactly do you plan to do that?"

Nyx looked down briefly at the unconscious guard.

Then back up.

"It left a trace."

Kael blinked. "A trace?"

Nyx nodded. "Something like that doesn't disappear completely. Not immediately."

Kael stared at him. "…You can track it?"

"Yes."

The simplicity of the answer made it even more unsettling.

The patrol leader hesitated, clearly weighing his options. Then he looked at Nyx more carefully than before.

"You're not just some wanderer," he said.

Nyx didn't respond.

The leader continued, "You knew what that thing was… or at least enough to deal with it."

"…Not enough," Nyx corrected.

Kael let out a quiet breath. "That's not exactly reassuring."

Nyx ignored him.

Instead, he stepped closer to where the guard had fallen and crouched slightly. His hand hovered just above the man's chest, not touching, but sensing.

The energy was faint now.

But it was there.

A lingering thread.

"…Found it," Nyx murmured.

Kael stepped closer. "Already?"

Nyx stood up slowly, his eyes shifting toward the forest beyond the patrol route.

"It's moving."

The patrol leader frowned. "Moving where?"

Nyx's expression hardened slightly.

"Away."

Kael smirked faintly. "Of course it is."

Nyx took a step forward.

"I'm going after it."

That got an immediate reaction.

"Wait," the patrol leader said. "You're not going alone."

Nyx stopped.

Slowly, he turned his head.

"I am."

Kael stepped in. "Yeah, no. That's not happening."

Nyx raised an eyebrow slightly. "And why not?"

Kael crossed his arms. "Because whatever that thing was… it's not normal. And you said it yourself, it recognized you."

Nyx's gaze didn't waver. "Which makes it my problem."

Kael shook his head. "Or it makes you the target."

A brief pause.

Nyx considered that.

Then—

"…Good."

Kael blinked. "Good?!"

Nyx's lips curved faintly. "That means it will come back."

The logic was simple.

Dangerous.

But effective.

Kael let out a short laugh, shaking his head. "You're actually insane."

"Probably," Nyx replied.

The patrol leader stepped forward again. "This isn't a joke. If something like that is inside our territory, we need to report it."

Nyx glanced at him. "Do that."

"And you?" the leader asked.

Nyx turned his attention back to the forest.

"I don't wait."

Kael sighed loudly. "Of course you don't."

He stepped forward, falling in line beside Nyx.

"I'm coming with you."

Nyx didn't look at him. "You don't need to."

Kael smirked. "Didn't say I needed to. I said I'm coming."

A brief silence passed between them.

Then Nyx spoke.

"…Do what you want."

Kael grinned slightly. "That's what I like to hear."

Behind them, the patrol leader shook his head. "You're both reckless."

Nyx began walking.

"Maybe," he said.

Kael followed.

"But standing still won't solve anything."

The forest ahead stretched into darkness, deeper and quieter than before. The faint trace Nyx had sensed pulsed like a distant signal, guiding him forward.

Each step they took carried them further away from the safety of the patrol routes.

Further into the unknown.

Kael glanced around, his senses on edge now. "…You feel that?"

"Yes," Nyx replied.

"It's… wrong," Kael added.

Nyx nodded slightly. "It doesn't belong here."

They continued moving, the trees growing thicker, the silence heavier.

Then—

Kael slowed slightly.

"…Hey," he said.

Nyx stopped.

"What?"

Kael's eyes scanned the darkness ahead. "We're not alone."

Nyx's gaze sharpened instantly.

Because he felt it too.

Not one.

Not two.

Multiple presences.

Watching.

Waiting.

Hidden within the shadows.

The faint trace he had followed—

It wasn't just leading them somewhere.

It had led them into something.

A trap.

Kael's voice dropped slightly. "…Tell me you knew this was coming."

Nyx's eyes glimmered faintly.

"…I had a feeling."

Kael exhaled slowly. "That's not comforting."

The forest went completely still.

Then—

A voice echoed from the darkness.

Low.

Distorted.

"You came…"

Nyx didn't move.

Didn't react.

But his presence changed.

Subtly.

Dangerously.

"…I was invited," he replied calmly.

A faint, twisted laugh echoed around them.

"Good…"

More shadows shifted.

More presences revealed.

Not fully visible.

But enough.

"…Then you can join them."

Kael's eyes narrowed. "Join who?"

The voice didn't answer.

Instead—

The darkness moved.

And for the first time since entering the forest—

Nyx felt something new.

Not fear.

Not hesitation.

But—

Interest.

His lips curved faintly.

"…Now this is different."

And the night—

Finally revealed its true danger.
