Chapter 14 - Could Not Show Up Empty-Handed For The First Visit

Without waiting for his reply, Janice added, " If you're not ready to meet them yet, I'll tell him that it's not a good time."

After all, Christopher was still unemployed and she didn't want her dad grilling him over his work status.

As soon as she finished her sentence, Christopher said, "It's okay. What time tomorrow?"

"Huh?" Janice was stunned for a moment before she nodded. "Tomorrow night, I'll pick you up after work."

"Okay."

Janice returned to her room and her mood was somber at the thought of bringing Christopher home tomorrow.

Christopher didn't know about her family's situation, but she knew what could happen tomorrow.

Gladys and Vanessa would probably voice their opinions of him directly.

The next day, Janice received a call from Christopher as soon as she got off work.

He told her that he was waiting at the door.

Janice was surprised. After all, she told him that she would pick him up at home.

She didn't expect him to drop by her workplace.

When she left the TV station, she saw an eye-catching black Bentley parked at the entrance. She had seen this car before. It was the one Christopher drove when she moved houses last time.

Christopher got out of the car. He was dressed in a suit and looked quite handsome.

It was obvious that he spent some time on his grooming today.

Janice already knew that Christopher was handsome, but when she saw him right now, she couldn't help but stare at him longingly.

How could her husband be so dreamy?

Christopher opened the front passenger door and said. "Get in the car."

Upon hearing his voice, Janice recovered from her daze and entered the car. After she sat in the passenger seat, Christopher closed the car door and sat on the driver's seat.

Janice glanced at Christopher wearing a seat belt, and said, "This car is lavish."

After all, her family knew about Christopher's financial status. If he drove an expensive car in such an ostentatious manner, it would be inevitable for Gladys and

Vanessa to gossip about him. She didn't want Christopher to be laughed at.

Christopher said, "It's okay. If you think the car is too lavish, we can park it somewhere far away."

Janice agreed to his suggestion.

Christopher drove in silence.

Janice briefly introduced her family members.

When it came to Vanessa and Gladys, her face turned gloomy. "Don't take their words to heart. It's their personality. I'm used to it. I'm afraid that you..."

Christopher knew what she wanted to say. "Have you forgotten? It's not the first time I've seen them."

"You're right."

Janice relaxed once she heard Christopher.

Soon, they arrived at the Gladwells home. Christopher parked the car away from the property.

After getting out, Janice spotted Christopher opening the trunk of the car. She was puzzled and followed him.

She was stunned when she saw Christopher with expensive cigars and whiskies.

"Christopher, why did you buy so many things?"

Christopher replied, "It's my first time here. I can't be empty-handed."

"But, these are too expensive. Where did you get the money? These are worth more than ten grand!"

Janice was in disbelief.

He forgot about the price when he asked Rob to buy the gifts. When he heard Janice, he realized that he had made a mistake.

He said, "You didn't even ask for anything when you married me. These gifts are nothing."

Janice couldn't find any reason to refute what he said. But when she thought that the gifts cost more than ten grand, she couldn't help but feel distressed.

...

"Let's forget about it this time. But Chris, I've always wanted to say this: We don't have to act rich if we're not. Look at these cigarettes and whiskies. You're not rich and they are not cheap."

Janice thought that she had to remind Christopher of this.

Christopher was speechless. He shouldn't have lied to her.

Look what happened now because of money.

"Okay, you're right. I'll do as you say."

They carried the things and headed to the house.

As soon as she entered the house, May was waiting for them.

"Janice, you're home."

May had been working in her house for a long time since her mother was around.

Janice was happy to see her.

"May, where's my dad?"

"Mr. Gladwell is in the study room. Come in."

May let them in. When she saw Christopher behind Janice, she was blown away by his demeanor.

Janice and Christopher immediately saw Vanessa and Gladys sitting on the sofa in the living room. They didn't even bother to welcome either guest when they saw them.

Janice wasn't bothered. Besides, she didn't come to see them, so she told Christopher, "Let's go to the study room."

Christopher nodded and was about to follow Janice before Gladys interrupted them. "Oh, Janice. Ever since you got married, you don't care about me anymore, do you?"

At first, Gladys didn't want to care about Janice, but then she saw the gifts Christopher held in his hands.

She could tell at a glance that they were expensive. But it was strange. After all, everyone knew that Janice had married a poor man. Where did he get the money to buy such expensive gifts? Could they be fake?

Gladys began to laugh at the thought of that.

Janice didn't know what Gladys was thinking. She heard Gladys and stopped in her tracks. Then she looked over and said, "Auntie, I'm not blind. How could I not see you? It's just that you don't seem to welcome us."

Gladys was stunned for a moment and said, "Nonsense! You're a guest. Vanessa, help your brother-in-law with the gifts."

Vanessa stood up and was about to pick up the gift from Christopher when Janice stopped her.

"Vanessa, these are for Dad. You're a girl. You'd better not touch these cigarettes and whiskies."

With that, she walked away with Christopher still carrying their goods.

Vanessa stood there awkwardly.

"Mom! What's so good about those cigarettes and whiskies?"

Gladys said, "Those cigarettes and whiskies are top quality; worth more than ten grand. Think about it. Janice's husband is poor. How can he afford them? I think they are fake!"

"Then why do you still want them?"

"You silly girl, of course, I did that to shame her. Think about it, our company crisis was solved by Janice. Your dad was deceived and he even asked her to bring her broke husband here for dinner. One day, he might even pass on the company to him. By then, everything will be too late."

Vanessa listened to her mother and asked curiously, "Mom, are you saying that you want to expose them?"

"Of course, your father hates these superficial people."

"Just wait and see. I will expose them." Gladys thought bitterly.

However, Vanessa felt bad and couldn't bring herself to do so. After all, Christopher was too handsome.

Even though he was poor, he was good-looking.

"With that face and that figure, I would do anything for him."

Vanessa quickly gave up the thought once she recalled that he was Janice's husband.
