Story: "The Light of the Last Afternoon"
I am Rashed. Since my childhood, I had big dreams. I always thought that one day I would become a successful person, earn a lot of money, and remove all the sufferings of my family. But at a very young age, I realized that life is not as easy as we imagine.
My father is a day laborer. Every morning, he goes out in search of work. Sometimes he works at construction sites, sometimes in fields, and sometimes he finds no work at all. When he returns home in the evening, his face clearly shows how tired he is. There were many days when he came back empty-handed, and those days felt very heavy in our home.
My mother is a housewife. She always tries to manage the family with very little. Many times, she stayed hungry just to feed me. When I was younger, I didn't fully understand it, but as I grew older, I realized that this was true love and sacrifice.
I was good at studies. I always got good results in school. My teachers liked me very much. They often said, "Rashed, one day you will become something great." These words stayed in my heart and gave me strength.
But life suddenly changed.
One day, my father got seriously injured while working. A heavy object fell on his leg, and he could not work for months. That day marked the beginning of our hardest times.
There was no income in the family. Food was running out. For the first time, I saw helplessness in my mother's eyes.
One night, my mother said to me softly,
"My son, I know you want to study… but we also need to run this family."
I remained silent. Inside me, there was a storm. I understood that it was no longer time to just dream—it was time to take responsibility.
From the next day, I started working at a small shop. I went to school in the morning, worked in the shop in the afternoon, and studied at night with a tired body.
At first, it was very difficult. My hands hurt, my eyes felt heavy with sleep, but I kept telling myself, "Don't give up."
One day, the shop owner said to me,
"Rashed, if you work full-time, I will pay you more."
His words kept echoing in my mind. If I worked full-time, my family would get some relief. But what about my studies?
That night, I couldn't sleep. After thinking a lot, I made a decision—I would not leave my studies.
The next day, I said to him,
"Sir, I will work, but I will not leave my studies."
He looked at me for a moment and then said,
"Alright, do as you can. I will support you."
His words gave me new strength.
My days were full of struggle. While my friends were playing, I was working. Some of them even laughed at me.
One day, a friend said,
"Why are you working so hard? Enjoy your life!"
I smiled and replied,
"Not everyone starts from the same place."
That was my reality.
Even during exams, I had to work. Many nights, I fell asleep with books in my hands. Still, I didn't give up.
Finally, the day of my SSC exam result arrived.
It was one of the most important days of my life.
When I saw my result, I couldn't believe it—I got GPA 5!
Tears started rolling down my eyes. They were tears of joy, struggle, and victory.
My mother hugged me and said,
"I knew you could do it."
That day brought a new light into our lives.
After that, I got admitted to college. This time, I started dreaming even bigger, but I also understood the reality of life.
Along with my studies, I started giving tuition. I managed my own expenses and slowly helped my family too.
I realized that life is not just about dreams—it is about struggle.
After a few years, I finally got a good job.
On the day I received my first salary, I handed it to my father.
With a trembling voice, he said,
"Today, I am proud of you."
I couldn't say anything. I just felt that all the hardships were worth it.
That evening, I stood on the rooftop and watched the sunset. The sky turned red, and I thought—
Life is like this sunset.
At the end of the day, darkness comes. But that does not mean everything is over. Because the sun will rise again the next day.
Just like that, the struggles of life are not permanent.
Now I know—
Life is hard, but with patience, hard work, and hope, anyone can overcome the darkness and reach the light.
