Clack.
The heavy wooden door closed behind him.
The moment the latch engaged... the motion sensors embedded in the ceiling detected his presence.
Click.
The narrow hallway lit up instantly, casting a bright, even light across the dark stone walls.
Liam did not move forward... choosing instead to stay anchored in place, staring at the blank wall ahead.
A long, deep breath escaped his lungs... an attempt to push out the heavy weight resting on his chest.
The sheer exhaustion of carrying a fabricated persona all day... the forced smiles... the careful lies... the constant monitoring of Jack's reactions... drained him deeply. Yet, he did not let any internal fatigue show.
It was as if he was unwilling to show even a tiny deviation from his usual behavior. Those deep breaths served a physical purpose... a necessary rhythm to keep internal chemistry normal.
Stepping forward, he reached the main door, let the biometric scanner beep against his tracker... and pushed into the dark main hall.
Small overhead lights triggered immediately.
Liam tapped his smartwatch twice, pulling up a translucent hologram, and adjusted the Aero-Temp Node to a comfortable warmth against the evening chill.
Walking further in, he bypassed the L-shaped sofa and the dark TV panel, stopping directly in front of the large reinforced window.
He stood there for several minutes... looking out at the quiet street of the residential grid. The streetlights cast long shadows across the white pavement. He watched the wind rustle the leaves of a distant tree.
His face remained a completely blank slate... no frowning, no sighing. Maybe existing in that space was enough... watching the outside world without truly seeing it.
Turning around, his quiet gaze settled on the metallic sliding door at the back of the hall, leading to the kitchen. Just to the left of that sliding door was a short, narrow passage... providing access to the bedroom.
He stepped through the opening and entered his bedroom.
The room was simple but solid—one side taken up by a heavy single bed with a thick mattress, the other by a dark metal wardrobe fitted neatly into the wall. In the corner, a small desk and a plain chair sat undisturbed... as if waiting for a quieter moment.
Screak...
Liam pulled open the dark metal wardrobe.
He slipped off his academy coat... loosened his tie... and removed his white shirt, folding everything with practiced care. Sitting on the edge of the bed, he tugged off his boots, then stood to unfasten his belt and step out of his trousers, placing them inside.
Grabbing a grey t-shirt and loose black trousers, the next stop was the attached bathroom in the right corner.
As he pushed open the frosted glass door, the lights flickered on, reflecting against the anti-slip white tiles. He walked past the sensor-operated sink and the brightly lit mirror... making a beeline for the shower.
He stepped into the shower cubicle and turned the dial.
Shhhhh...
Warm water poured down steadily. He stood under it... letting it run over him, washing away the sweat and dust of the day. He soaped himself, rinsed thoroughly, and stayed there... until the water ran clear.
Turning the dial back, he stopped the water and stepped out. He dried himself with a towel and put on the fresh clothes.
Back in the bedroom, the damp towel landed on the chair before Liam walked out into the hall.
A quick command on the smartwatch switched on the TV. Within seconds... the screen came alive with the news already playing.
Liam did not stop to watch. He walked straight to the back of the hall and slid the metallic kitchen door open.
One of the storage cabinets set into the wall held a sealed nutrient packet. It was a dense, pre-prepared meal, compact and engineered for efficiency. Grabbing a metallic bowl from another cabinet, tearing the packet open, and pouring the contents inside... took mere seconds.
Placing the bowl directly onto the glowing induction pad and tapping a button started the heating process.
With a soft sizzle... the food slowly began to warm up.
While he stood there waiting for the food to heat… the steady, clear voice of a woman reporting the news drifted from the television in the hall and into the kitchen.
"The situation on the ground remains highly unstable... but we finally have confirmed numbers regarding the horrific events in Bolivia. After twenty-three days of exhaustive operations... the final count is staggering. One thousand seven hundred and twenty-three civilians have been safely extracted and returned to their families. However... the casualty list is equally massive. One thousand one hundred and twenty-three individuals... did not make it out alive."
"When you look at the timeline of these mass disappearances, the escalation is hard to comprehend. We are not just talking about ordinary farmers vanishing from rural sectors. Entire administrative bodies... local police units... and even the military personnel who initially went in to investigate... were wiped off the map without a single trace."
Liam stood in the kitchen, absorbing the entire exchange. The food on the induction pad began to bubble.
Beep.
Tapping the button turned the heat off. Grabbing a thick cloth allowed a safe lift of the warm metallic bowl... along with a spoon from the counter.
He slid the kitchen door close and walked back into the main hall.
"The Bolivian government knew they were outmatched from the very beginning. They issued formal pleas for international assistance weeks ago... reaching out to the United States, Russia, and China. They even sent direct, public communications to the Big Seven... pleading for superhuman assistance."
"But the major global powers claim their resources are stretched to the limit... due to a massive spike in superpowered terrorist activities across Europe and Asia."
Crossing the room, Liam dropped onto the sofa... the cushions sinking with a muffled thud. He settled the warm metal bowl onto the table, dug his spoon into the mash, and took a slow... deliberate bite.
"Even the famous independent factions... like the Eclipse Breakers, who operate outside government jurisdiction and had the means to intervene... simply did not answer the call."
"Which brings us to the actual saviors of this ordeal. When the global superpowers turned their backs... The Eternity Foundation stepped forward. A private organization with significantly less manpower than any national army mobilized immediately... establishing a forward operating branch directly inside Bolivia."
Liam took another bite. Swallowing the food, his eyes lifted to look at the screen. The news displayed rough, shaky footage of the jungle compound. Plumes of black smoke rose above the trees. Medical tents bearing the logo of The Eternity Foundation were set up near a dirt road... surrounded by exhausted-looking civilians.
"The details of their operation are just coming to light... and they are incredibly disturbing. The Foundation tracked the disappearances deep into uncharted jungle territories... uncovering a massive, heavily fortified compound belonging to an extremist cult."
"A cult that was actively using the kidnapped victims for sacrificial rituals,"
"The cult was harvesting these people… treating them like nothing more than fuel for a dark ritual. The Eternity Foundation didn't just find a hostage situation; they walked into a literal slaughterhouse. They didn't wait for a second. They smashed through the cult's lines with everything they had."
Tink.
Liam's spoon tapped against the edge of the metallic bowl, but his gaze remained fixed on the shaky footage.
"And we have received reports that several of those cult members possessed dangerous... unclassified abilities,"
"This was not a simple firefight. This was a brutal... superhuman conflict. The Eternity Foundation risked their own people to break those containment lines. Because of their direct intervention... over seventeen hundred people are breathing today. The cult suffered heavy losses. A large portion of their leadership was killed during the clash... several members were captured... and the remaining few managed to flee deeper into the jungle."
"The captured cult members are currently being transferred to a secure Eternity Foundation facility for intense interrogation,"
"Authorities are hoping to uncover the exact nature of the ritual they were attempting to complete... as well as any potential connections to The Orion Syndicate."
Liam did not react to it. He simply took another spoonful of his food.
Chewing and swallowing in silence... his attention dropped to scrape the edges of the bowl, gathering the remaining mash before looking back up at the screen when Elena started speaking again.
"It really forces you to ask some difficult questions about our current global structure,"
"When a crisis of this magnitude occurs... who can the vulnerable nations actually rely on? It seems that the established powers and the glorified heroes are only available when it suits their interests. If The Eternity Foundation had not stepped up and risked everything... we would be reporting on nearly three thousand casualties today instead of celebrating the rescue of seventeen hundred lives."
"Because of The Eternity Foundation, thousands of families in Bolivia are reuniting tonight. They proved that true heroism does not require a national flag... or a flashy media presence. It just requires the willingness to act... when everyone else refuses."
"We will continue to monitor the situation in Bolivia and provide updates on the recovery efforts,"
"Our thoughts are with the families of the victims tonight."
"Coming up next... we dive into the recent economic shifts in the European energy sector,"
The moment the broadcast transitioned away from the Bolivia incident, Liam raised a left wrist.
Beep.
A quick tap on the smartwatch sent a soft click through the air... and the large black panel on the wall went completely dark instantly.
The voices cut out... leaving the main hall in total silence.
Finishing the last bite, Liam stood up from the sofa with the empty metallic bowl..
Walking back to the kitchen and sliding the door open led to placing the bowl into the metallic sink.
Shhhhh.
Turning the tap let water run over the metal... rinsing the leftover residue down the drain.
Glug... glug... glug.
Liam grabbed a clean glass from the upper cabinet, filled it with filtered water from the dispenser... and drank the entire thing in three long gulps.
Setting the glass down on the steel countertop, he walked out of the kitchen and pulled the sliding door shut.
Steps traced back to the front of the main hall... stopping in front of the large reinforced glass window again.
The street outside was completely empty. The lamps cast bright pools of light against the white pavement. He stood there for a few minutes... his hands shoved deep into the pockets of his loose black trousers.
Tap... tap... tap.
Turning away from the window, Liam began a slow pace across the main hall. The path stretched from the window toward the sliding kitchen door... then back again.
His mind was churning rapidly. The events of the day... the conversation by the lake... the fabricated stories... the underlying threats... the massive board of players moving in the dark... everything spun together inside his head.
He analyzed the pieces... calculating probabilities... searching for loose ends that could unravel his current stability.
No words were spoken aloud... no sighs escaped... just the continuous walking back and forth across the room.
Ten minutes passed. The room remained perfectly quiet except for the sound of his footsteps.
Twenty minutes passed. The Aero-Temp Node continued to push warm air through the hall... keeping the temperature perfectly balanced.
Thirty minutes passed. He finally stopped walking.
Ping.
Raising a left wrist and tapping the glass of the smartwatch woke up the holographic interface.
A swipe to the settings menu allowed selection of the lighting controls and toggling the 'Auto-Off' feature. The system was now set to shut down all lights in the house exactly five minutes after detecting no human motion.
He entered his bedroom. The digital clock on his study desk glowed softly in the corner. The red numbers read 10:55 PM.
Fwip.
He walked over to the heavy single bed... pulled the thick blanket back... and lay down on the mattress.
He stared up at the ceiling... then closed his eyes, his breathing slowing down into a steady, even rhythm.
Five minutes passed.
Click.
The lights in the bedroom, the passage, and the main hall turned off simultaneously. The entire house plunged into total darkness.
******
Somewhere inside the Academy…
Whirrr...
A vast hall held hundreds of humans... dominated by towering walls of thousands of monitors. The glare from the active screens threw restless shadows across the metal floor.
Different sections of the academy were displayed across the grid. The empty white pavement of the Central Nexus. The quiet, dark fields of the Agricultural Sector. The long rows of stone houses in the residential dormitories.
On one specific screen near the center of the grid... a high-definition thermal imaging feed showed the interior of building number thirteenth in the Senior locality. The bright red and orange heat signature of a human body lay perfectly still on a bed. Liam was sleeping.
A figure stood among the crowd... watching the screens carefully.
A voice spoke from near the back wall... breaking the heavy silence.
"Was there any suspicious activity... in Liam and Jack's conversation today?"
