Chapter 35 - CHAPTER 35 — This Time I Mean It

She didn't stop walking.

Not this time.

Elena didn't look back.

Didn't slow down.

Didn't wait.

Because if she did—

She already knew.

She wouldn't leave.

The hallway felt longer than before.

Colder.

Each step heavier.

"This time I mean it," she whispered.

Not to him.

To herself.

Behind her—

Nothing.

No footsteps.

No voice.

No "Elena."

That hurt more than anything.

She reached the elevator.

Pressed the button.

Waited.

The silence pressed in.

Too loud.

Too empty.

The doors opened.

She stepped inside.

Alone.

As the doors closed—

Her chest tightened.

Hard.

"Don't stop me," she whispered.

Lie.

The elevator descended.

Slow.

Painfully slow.

Her reflection stared back at her.

Unfamiliar.

"What are you doing?" she asked quietly.

No answer.

Because she knew.

She was walking away from something real.

And that terrified her.

The doors opened.

She stepped out.

And this time—

She didn't hesitate.

She walked out of the building.

Into the city.

And didn't look back.

Upstairs—

Adrian didn't move.

He was still standing in the same place.

Where she left him.

The room felt empty.

Wrong.

Too quiet.

His jaw tightened.

He didn't go after her.

Didn't call her name.

Didn't move.

Because this time—

He meant it too.

Minutes passed.

Then—

More.

The silence didn't get easier.

He exhaled slowly.

"This is better."

Silence.

He didn't believe it.

He walked to the window.

Looked out.

Same city.

Same lights.

But it felt different.

Because she wasn't there.

His phone sat on the table.

Silent.

He looked at it.

Once.

Then away.

Then back again.

Nothing.

No message.

That was expected.

That was the point.

His hand moved.

Picked it up.

Paused.

Then—

He put it back down.

Hard.

"This ends now," he said.

Silence.

He didn't believe that either.

Across the city—

Elena walked without direction.

Her steps slower now.

Her chest tight.

Her thoughts louder.

"You did the right thing," she whispered.

Lie.

She stopped.

In the middle of the street.

Closed her eyes.

Took a breath.

And failed.

Because everything came back.

Him.

His voice.

His silence.

And the one thing he didn't say.

Her chest tightened again.

"Say it," she whispered.

But he didn't.

And that…

Was the problem.

She opened her eyes.

Looked at the city.

And for the first time—

It felt empty.

Her phone stayed silent.

And somehow—

That hurt more than anything else.

Back in the apartment—

Adrian's control started to crack.

Not outside.

Never outside.

But inside.

He picked up the phone again.

Looked at her name.

His thumb hovered.

One message.

That's all it would take.

A single word.

But he didn't send it.

He couldn't.

Because if he did—

He wouldn't stop.

His hand tightened around the phone.

Then—

He put it down.

Again.

And walked away.

But this time—

The silence followed him.

And it didn't let go.
