Chapter 34 - CHAPTER 34 — Say It

They didn't move.

Not after that.

The distance between them was gone.

Again.

But this time…

It felt different.

Heavier.

More real.

Elena's heart was still racing.

"You said you choose this."

Her voice was quieter now.

More dangerous.

He didn't answer.

"Say it again," she added.

A pause.

Then—

"I choose this."

Her breath caught.

That mattered.

More than it should.

She stepped closer.

Not that there was space left.

"Then stop acting like you don't feel anything."

Silence.

That hit.

Hard.

His jaw tightened.

"I didn't say that."

"You didn't say anything," she said.

A pause.

"That's the problem."

Her chest rose slowly.

"You keep doing this."

A step closer.

"You get close…"

Her voice dropped.

"…then you hide behind control."

Silence.

That landed.

He didn't deny it.

Didn't argue.

And that was the answer.

Her heart tightened.

"You feel something," she said softly.

A pause.

Then—

"No."

That was too fast.

Too sharp.

She shook her head.

"That's not true."

Silence.

"You wouldn't have come for me."

A beat.

Then—

"That was different."

Her breath caught.

"How?"

A pause.

Then—

"You were in danger."

"That's not enough," she said.

Silence.

That wasn't enough anymore.

She stepped closer.

Her voice softer.

"But you stayed."

A pause.

"You didn't leave after."

Silence.

"That wasn't about safety."

Her heart raced.

"That was about me."

That hit.

Deep.

He didn't answer.

Didn't deny it.

And that was worse.

She looked at him.

Really looked.

"At least I say it," she whispered.

A pause.

"I don't pretend I don't feel anything."

Silence.

That broke something.

Inside him.

He stepped closer.

Fast this time.

No hesitation.

Her breath caught.

His hand moved—

Gripped her arm.

Not to stop.

To hold.

"You don't understand what you're asking for," he said quietly.

Her voice didn't break.

"Then tell me."

A pause.

Then—

"I don't say things like that."

Her chest tightened.

"Why?"

His voice dropped.

"Because once I do…"

A step closer.

"…there's no going back."

Silence.

"That already happened," she said.

A beat.

Then—

"Yes."

Everything stilled.

Her heart was too loud.

Her thoughts too fast.

"Then stop holding back," she whispered.

That was it.

The last push.

His control cracked.

Finally.

He pulled her closer.

No space.

No distance.

Her breath stopped.

"You want the truth?" he said.

Her heart slammed.

"Yes."

A pause.

Long.

Heavy.

Then—

"I—"

He stopped.

Her breath caught.

"Say it," she whispered.

Silence.

Everything slowed.

His jaw tightened.

His grip tightened.

And then—

He let go.

Stepped back.

Again.

Too fast.

Too controlled.

Her chest dropped.

"You always stop."

A pause.

Then—

"Yes."

Silence.

That hurt more now.

Because she knew—

He almost said it.

And he chose not to.

She stepped back.

This time—

Really stepping away.

"I'm done asking," she said quietly.

A pause.

Then—

"Good."

That word hit.

Hard.

But his eyes—

Didn't match it.

She turned.

Started to walk away.

Again.

And this time—

He didn't call her name.
