Chapter 3 - Chapter 2 — The Weight of What Cannot Be Chosen

The summons came at dawn.

Princess Ye-jin had not yet finished her tea when a court maid entered, her steps careful, her head bowed low enough to conceal her expression.

"Her Majesty requests your presence."

Requests.

The word lingered, delicate and misleading.

Ye-jin set the cup down without a sound. "I will come."

The maid withdrew at once, as though even remaining a moment longer might cross an unseen line.

Soo-ryun, who had been standing nearby, watched quietly.

"It has begun," she said.

Ye-jin rose, smoothing the front of her sleeves. "It was always going to."

There was no fear in her voice.

But there was something else—

A quiet understanding that whatever waited ahead would not ask for her consent.

The Queen's Hall

The Queen's chamber was a place of order.

Everything within it had purpose, balance, restraint. Even the light that filtered through the lattice windows seemed to know where it was allowed to fall.

Queen Dowager sat at the center, her posture straight, her gaze unwavering. Time had not softened her—it had refined her into something sharper.

Ye-jin entered and bowed deeply.

"Mother."

"You are late."

"I arrived as soon as I was called."

A brief pause.

The Queen gestured for her to rise. "Sit."

Ye-jin obeyed.

There was no warmth between them, but neither was there hostility. What existed was something far more enduring—expectation.

"You are of age," the Queen said plainly.

Ye-jin did not respond.

"There has been discussion among the ministers," she continued. "A proposal has been brought forward."

"I am aware."

That seemed to interest the Queen.

"Then you understand the importance of this matter."

"I understand its purpose."

The Queen's gaze sharpened slightly. "And what purpose is that?"

"To strengthen alliances. To secure influence."

"And your role?"

Ye-jin met her eyes.

"To accept."

The Queen studied her for a long moment.

"You speak as though this is a burden."

"It is not a burden," Ye-jin replied calmly. "It is an expectation."

"And expectations are to be fulfilled."

"Yes."

Another pause.

Then, almost as if testing something—

"Minister Kang's son is a suitable match."

Ye-jin lowered her gaze, not in submission, but in acknowledgment.

"I am certain he is."

"You will meet him soon."

There it was.

Not a question.

Not a suggestion.

A decision already made.

Ye-jin bowed her head slightly. "As you wish."

The Queen watched her carefully, searching for hesitation, resistance—anything.

There was none.

And somehow, that seemed to displease her more.

The Corridor Outside

The doors closed behind her with a quiet finality.

For a moment, Ye-jin stood still.

The world had not changed.

The palace remained the same—structured, controlled, unmoved.

And yet—

She exhaled slowly, her fingers tightening briefly within her sleeves.

So this is how it happens, she thought.

Not with force. Not with argument.

But with certainty that leaves no room for either.

Soo-ryun approached carefully. "Your Highness?"

Ye-jin began to walk.

"I am to be married."

Soo-ryun's steps faltered for only a second. "To Minister Kang's son?"

"Yes."

There was silence between them as they moved down the corridor.

Finally, Soo-ryun spoke, her voice softer than before. "Do you wish for me to say something comforting?"

Ye-jin considered this.

"No."

A pause.

"It would not be convincing."

Despite herself, Soo-ryun let out the faintest breath of something close to a laugh.

"At least you are honest."

Ye-jin's lips curved, just slightly. "It is one thing I am still allowed."

The Training Grounds — Later

Dae-hyun moved through drills with mechanical precision.

Strike. Step. Turn.

Again.

His body followed discipline without effort. Years of training had carved it into him so deeply that thought was unnecessary.

And yet—

His thoughts were not still.

"If something is not yours… does that mean you cannot feel it?"

The memory surfaced without permission.

His grip tightened.

The wooden sword struck harder than intended, sending his opponent stumbling back.

Dae-hyun stopped immediately.

"Maintain your footing," he said, his tone controlled.

But his mind was elsewhere.

It is only what you have been taught. Not what you are.

The words unsettled him in a way he could not define.

He had always understood himself clearly.

A guard.

A blade.

A presence without presence.

There had been no need for anything beyond that.

Until now.

"Captain."

The voice pulled him back.

One of the younger guards approached, hesitant. "You have been called."

Dae-hyun frowned slightly. "By whom?"

"The inner court."

A brief pause.

"That is all I was told."

Dae-hyun nodded once and handed over his weapon.

As he walked away, a thought lingered—

Unwelcome, persistent.

Why now?

A Chance Encounter

The corridor was quiet.

Dae-hyun moved with purpose, his steps measured, his gaze forward.

And then—

He stopped.

Princess Ye-jin stood ahead.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Dae-hyun bowed. "Your Highness."

Ye-jin regarded him calmly.

"You were not in the garden yesterday."

It was not an accusation.

But it was not casual, either.

"I was assigned elsewhere."

"I see."

A pause followed.

Dae-hyun waited, expecting dismissal.

It did not come.

Instead, she asked, "Do you ever find yourself thinking about things you should not?"

The question caught him off guard.

"No."

Her gaze lingered on him.

"That is either very fortunate… or very unfortunate."

Dae-hyun hesitated, then spoke carefully. "A wandering mind is a liability."

"And a controlled one?" she asked.

"It is reliable."

Ye-jin nodded slightly, as though acknowledging something only she understood.

"I am to be married."

The words were simple.

But they landed heavily.

Dae-hyun's expression did not change.

"That is expected."

"Yes."

Silence followed.

Then, unexpectedly—

"You should congratulate me."

Dae-hyun blinked, just once.

It was subtle. Barely noticeable.

But it was there.

"Congratulations, Your Highness."

His tone was flawless.

And yet—

Something about it felt incomplete.

Ye-jin tilted her head slightly. "You sound as though you are reciting something you were told to say."

"It is appropriate."

"And sincerity?"

"That is not required."

For a brief moment, something like amusement touched her expression.

"Then you are an honest man."

Dae-hyun did not know how to respond to that.

So he did not.

She took a step past him, then paused.

"Dae-hyun."

He straightened slightly. "Yes, Your Highness."

"If I were not the person I am… and you were not the person you are…"

She stopped there.

The rest remained unspoken.

Dae-hyun felt it anyway.

And for the first time—

He wished she had not.

Ye-jin continued walking.

After a few steps, she added lightly, almost as an afterthought—

"You would still be just as difficult to speak with."

A faint pause.

"…though perhaps slightly less rigid."

Dae-hyun stood still.

And after a moment—

"…perhaps," he said quietly.

It was the closest thing to humor he had allowed in years.

Dae-hyun's Thoughts

He remained in the corridor long after she had gone.

The silence pressed in around him, heavier than before.

She is to be married.

The thought should have meant nothing.

It changed nothing.

It affected nothing.

And yet—

His chest felt… unfamiliar.

Not pain.

Not quite.

Something tighter. Less defined.

He exhaled slowly.

This is irrelevant.

He repeated it, once. Twice.

It did not settle.

For the first time, Dae-hyun understood something he had never needed to before—

Clarity was not the same as peace.

End of Chapter 2.....

Something had shifted further.

Not openly. Not yet.

But beneath duty, beneath silence, beneath everything they had been taught to be—

Something had begun to resist.
