Chapter 6 - Chapter 4 — The Distance One Keeps, The Distance One Breaks

Morning returned the palace to order.

Whatever softness the night had carried was gone, replaced by precision. Voices were measured again. Movements were deliberate. Even the wind, it seemed, had learned restraint.

Dae-hyun stood at his post outside the inner court.

Still. Silent. Unyielding.

If there had been any change in him, it did not show.

A passing servant stumbled slightly as she hurried by, nearly dropping the tray in her hands. The porcelain rattled faintly.

Dae-hyun did not look at her.

"Walk carefully," he said.

His tone was even—not harsh, but firm enough that she immediately steadied herself.

"Yes, sir."

No further words followed.

That was how he existed within the palace—present, but never engaging more than necessary.

And yet—

When Princess Ye-jin approached, something shifted.

Not visibly.

But undeniably.

A Guard Who Does Not Bend

"You are earlier than usual."

Ye-jin's voice broke the quiet.

Dae-hyun bowed. "Your Highness."

She studied him briefly.

There was something about him that remained unchanged no matter what passed between them. The same controlled posture. The same measured tone.

"You do not appear affected," she said.

"By what?"

"My engagement."

Dae-hyun's expression remained neutral. "There is no reason for me to be."

A faint pause.

"You are very consistent," she replied.

"It is expected."

"And if expectation were removed?"

"It is not."

There it was again—

That distance.

That refusal to step beyond what was required.

And yet, Ye-jin noticed something small.

He had not once met her eyes.

"Look at me," she said quietly.

Dae-hyun did not move.

Then, slowly, he did.

Their gazes met.

And for a brief moment—

The distance faltered.

Then it returned.

"You should not test limits that exist for a reason," he said.

"And you should not hide behind them," she replied.

Silence followed.

Then, unexpectedly—

"You have a tendency to make things more difficult than they are."

The words came from him.

Calm. Direct.

Almost… disapproving.

Ye-jin raised a brow. "Is that your way of offering advice?"

"It is an observation."

"An unnecessary one."

"Most truths are."

A brief pause—

And then, despite herself—

A faint smile.

"You are insufferable."

Dae-hyun inclined his head slightly. "So I have been told."

It was not quite humor.

But it was close enough.

The Crown Prince's Burden

Elsewhere in the palace, Prince Min-jae stood within a smaller courtyard, one rarely visited by officials or servants.

Here, the air felt different.

Less formal.

Less observed.

"You should not have called me here."

The woman's voice was low, steady.

Min-jae turned.

She stood beneath a tree, her posture composed, her expression unreadable—but her eyes held something far more complicated.

Han Seo-ah.

Daughter of a respected scholar. A woman known for her intelligence rather than her beauty—though she possessed both.

"I did not call you," Min-jae said. "You came."

Seo-ah allowed the faintest hint of a smile. "That is not a denial."

"No," he admitted.

Silence settled between them.

Not uncomfortable.

But heavy.

"You are to be married," she said.

Min-jae's gaze shifted slightly. "So I have been informed."

"And you accept it."

"I do not have the option not to."

Seo-ah stepped closer.

"You always speak of duty," she said. "As though it explains everything."

"It does."

"No," she replied quietly. "It only excuses it."

The words lingered.

Min-jae's expression hardened slightly. "You speak as though you do not understand."

"I understand perfectly," she said. "That is why I am here."

A pause.

Then—

"Tell me," she continued, "if you had been born as someone else… would you have chosen differently?"

Min-jae did not answer immediately.

For the first time—

He hesitated.

"Yes," he said at last.

Seo-ah nodded once.

"I thought so."

There was no relief in her expression.

Only confirmation.

"Then do not pretend this is something noble," she added. "It is simply something you cannot escape."

Min-jae's voice lowered. "And what would you have me do?"

"Nothing," she said.

A faint breath.

"That is the tragedy of it."

New Faces in a Controlled World

By afternoon, the palace welcomed new arrivals.

Minister Kang entered with his son, Kang Seung-woo, their presence drawing quiet attention.

Seung-woo moved with practiced elegance, his demeanor calm, his expression composed in a way that mirrored the court itself.

He bowed deeply before the royal family.

"Your Highness."

Ye-jin observed him carefully.

He was everything expected.

Measured. Educated. Controlled.

A perfect match.

"You have traveled far," she said.

"It is an honor," he replied.

There was nothing wrong in his words.

Nothing misplaced.

And yet—

Nothing real.

"I hope the palace meets your expectations," she added.

Seung-woo inclined his head slightly. "It exceeds them."

A pause.

"And you, Princess?"

Ye-jin met his gaze.

"I have lived here all my life."

A faint flicker of something passed through his eyes—curiosity, perhaps.

"Then I hope," he said, "that I may come to understand it as you do."

She did not respond.

Because she was not certain she understood it at all.

Dae-hyun's Observation

From a distance, Dae-hyun watched.

Not as a man.

But as a guard.

That was what he told himself.

Seung-woo stood too comfortably.

Spoke too carefully.

Moved too precisely.

There was nothing to fault.

And that—

Was what unsettled him.

He is suitable.

The thought came without resistance.

He is appropriate.

And yet—

Dae-hyun's gaze shifted, briefly, toward Ye-jin.

She stood composed, her posture flawless.

But her stillness—

Was different.

His jaw tightened slightly.

Then he looked away.

A Quiet Contrast

Later, as the formalities ended, Ye-jin walked through the corridor once more.

Dae-hyun followed at a distance.

"You do not approve," she said without turning.

"I do not have opinions."

"That is not what I asked."

A pause.

"He is suitable."

Ye-jin nodded slightly.

"Yes," she said. "He is."

Silence followed.

Then—

"He is also entirely forgettable."

Dae-hyun did not respond.

But something in his expression shifted—just slightly.

"You disagree?" she asked.

"No."

A brief pause.

"…I understand."

Ye-jin glanced back at him.

For a moment—

Their eyes met again.

And this time—

Neither looked away immediately.

The Softness He Does Not Show

That night, Dae-hyun remained at his post.

Unmoving.

Unchanged.

But his thoughts—

Were no longer as disciplined.

She will marry him.

It was a simple truth.

One that required no reaction.

And yet—

When he recalled the way she had stood beside Seung-woo—

Calm. Distant.

Unreachable—

Something within him resisted.

Not openly.

Not enough to matter.

But enough—

To exist.

End of Chapter 4.....

In a palace where everything had its place—

New pieces had begun to move.

And not all of them—

Fit as they should.
