Chapter 26 - Chapter 26 — Unmarked Ground

Marvin entered the passage.

The wall sealed behind him without sound.

Darkness pressed in, thicker than before. The crystal's light stretched forward, but it felt… reduced. Not weaker. Contained. The space resisted illumination.

No runes marked the walls.

No pulse guided his steps.

For the first time since entering the West Wing, the House did not respond.

Marvin slowed.

Every instinct told him this place operated differently. No feedback. No correction. Whatever he did here would not be adjusted or softened.

He took another step.

The sound echoed—once.

Then not again.

He stopped.

The second step made no sound at all.

Marvin looked down.

Same floor. Same motion.

Different result.

He crouched and placed his hand against the ground. Solid. Cold. No vibration. No pulse.

He stood again and took a third step.

Sound returned.

Inconsistent.

Not random.

He looked ahead, narrowing his focus. The corridor was straight, but the darkness distorted distance. The light from the crystal did not reveal edges clearly—it bent slightly, like it was being absorbed.

Marvin took a slow breath and moved forward again.

This time, he paid attention to everything.

Step.

Sound.

Step.

No sound.

Step.

Sound.

A pattern began to form—not in the floor, but in his movement.

He adjusted his pace.

Slower.

Step.

Sound.

Pause.

Step.

Sound.

No interruption.

Marvin didn't stop.

He continued forward, maintaining the same rhythm. Each step deliberate. Each movement controlled.

The silence held.

The corridor did not change, but the resistance faded slightly. The crystal's light extended further, revealing more of the path ahead.

Control.

Not force.

He reached a point where the corridor widened slightly.

And stopped.

Something stood ahead.

Not moving.

Not reacting.

A shape—tall, indistinct, positioned directly in the center of the path.

Marvin didn't raise the crystal immediately.

He observed.

The figure had no clear features. No defined edges. It didn't flicker like the shadows from before. It held its shape, but not its detail.

Unresolved.

Marvin took a step forward.

The figure did not move.

Another step.

Still nothing.

He stopped a few paces away.

Close enough now.

The outline shifted slightly, as if adjusting to his presence.

Marvin watched carefully.

Then he took one more step—

—and the figure moved.

Not forward.

Not backward.

It aligned.

Perfectly.

Mirroring his stance.

Marvin didn't move again.

Neither did it.

He tilted his head slightly.

The figure followed.

He shifted his weight.

So did it.

Marvin exhaled once.

"A reflection," he said quietly.

Not visual.

Behavioral.

He stepped to the side.

The figure stepped the same distance.

Blocking the path.

Marvin's gaze sharpened.

Not an enemy.

A condition.

He looked at the space around it.

Narrow passage. No alternate route. No visible mechanism.

Then he looked back at the figure.

It didn't attack.

Didn't advance.

Only matched.

Marvin stepped forward again.

The figure moved forward the same amount.

Distance unchanged.

He stopped.

Then, slowly, he stepped back.

The figure stepped forward.

Closing the gap.

Marvin didn't react immediately.

He watched.

Then he stepped back again.

The figure advanced again.

The space between them shrank.

Marvin's expression didn't change.

One more step back.

The figure moved forward—

—and passed him.

No contact.

No resistance.

It continued walking.

Marvin turned.

The figure moved away, maintaining the same pace he had just used.

Not blocking anymore.

Leading.

Marvin didn't follow immediately.

He watched the distance grow.

Then he stepped forward.

The figure didn't react this time.

It kept moving.

Same rhythm.

Same pace.

Marvin adjusted his steps to match.

The corridor extended ahead, the crystal's light now reaching further than before.

No resistance.

No distortion.

The path opened.

The figure continued walking ahead of him.

And for the first time in this passage, Marvin did not stop.
