Chapter 32 - Chapter 32 — The One Who Chose Differently

Marvin stood on the platform.

The doors around the chamber remained dim, except for a few that still held faint light. The figure before him had not moved since speaking.

"You may choose again."

Marvin didn't respond immediately.

His attention shifted.

Not to the doors.

To the space behind him.

The air changed.

Subtle.

But clear.

Another presence had entered.

Marvin turned.

Someone else stood at the edge of the platform.

A girl.

Not much older than him. Her posture was tense, shoulders slightly raised, eyes scanning the chamber with sharp awareness. In her hand—something similar to his key.

But different.

Darker.

Less stable.

She noticed him almost instantly.

Their eyes met.

Neither spoke at first.

Then she exhaled sharply, lowering her shoulders just slightly. "So… it's not just me."

Her voice carried relief—but controlled.

Marvin studied her.

"You made it through," he said.

She gave a short nod. "Barely."

Her grip on the key tightened. "This place… it doesn't explain anything."

"It does," Marvin said. "Just not directly."

She frowned slightly, glancing at the doors. "Yeah. I noticed that the hard way."

Marvin's gaze shifted briefly to her key.

The surface flickered faintly.

Unstable.

"You used a door," he said.

Not a question.

She hesitated.

Then answered anyway. "Yeah."

A pause.

"And you didn't."

"No."

She let out a small breath. Not quite a laugh. "Figures."

Marvin didn't respond.

She stepped forward onto the platform fully. The moment she did, the chamber reacted.

More doors lit up.

Not the same ones.

Different set.

Marvin noticed immediately.

Selection based on the individual.

Not fixed.

The girl noticed too.

"…Those weren't there before," she said quietly.

"They were," Marvin replied. "Just not for you."

She looked at him again.

Properly this time.

"You've been here longer."

"Yes."

"And you understand this place."

"Enough."

She studied him for a moment, then shook her head slightly. "Then let me guess—you're going to tell me to 'observe carefully' and 'not rush decisions.'"

Marvin didn't answer.

She smirked faintly. "Yeah. Thought so."

Silence settled briefly between them.

Then—

"My name's Tessa," she said.

Marvin nodded once. "Marvin."

She glanced at the figure standing at the center of the platform. "And that one?"

"Doesn't introduce itself."

Tessa sighed. "Of course."

She stepped closer to one of the lit doors on her side. The runes flickered as she approached—faster than Marvin's had.

Less stable.

Marvin noticed.

"You're forcing it," he said.

She stopped.

Turned slightly. "What?"

"The door," Marvin said. "You're trying to open it."

"That's the point, isn't it?"

"No."

Tessa frowned. "Then what is?"

Marvin lifted his key slightly.

"Alignment."

She looked at his key.

Then at hers.

The difference was obvious now.

His was steady.

Hers flickered.

"…So I did it wrong," she said quietly.

"You chose faster," Marvin replied.

She let out a breath, running a hand through her hair. "Yeah. That sounds like me."

Marvin watched her carefully.

No panic.

No denial.

Just recognition.

Good.

She stepped back from the door.

"…Alright," she said. "Then show me."

Marvin didn't move.

"I won't open it for you," he said.

"I'm not asking you to," she replied. "Just… don't let me mess it up again."

Marvin considered that.

Then nodded once.

"Watch the floor."

Tessa looked down.

A faint grid began to form beneath her feet.

Not as clear as before.

But present.

She didn't move immediately this time.

Good.

Marvin stepped back slightly, giving her space.

The chamber shifted subtly as both of them stood on the platform.

Two keys.

Two paths.

Interacting.

Tessa took a slow breath.

Then made her first step.

Carefully.

The grid reacted.

This time—

She noticed.
