It started with Luki on the first day.
That was the name Eleanor had used when she pointed her spatula at Lucas and demanded he chop ginger for the dumpling filling. "Luki, more ginger. This filling is underseasoned. I can tell from across the room." Lucas had complied without comment, though his ears had flickered through three distinct shades of pink—surprise, confusion, and something that Kevin would later classify as Reluctant Acceptance.
By the second day, he had become Lulu.
"Lulu, what's the weather forecast? The ceiling won't tell me. The ceiling and I have reached a truce, but I don't trust it with meteorology."
"ALFRED is not qualified to provide weather forecasts," Lucas said, looking up from his tablet. "I can access the National Weather Service database. The forecast is partly cloudy with a high of sixty-seven degrees. Twelve percent chance of precipitation after four."
