Eleanor leads us to the lower level through a door behind the main staircase that opens into a long stone corridor, the walls older than anything in the upper house, the air cooler and faintly damp in the way of spaces built before modern climate control became a consideration. She moves through it with the unhurried familiarity of someone who has walked this exact path thousands of times, her white dress catching the narrow strip of light from the ceiling fixtures as she goes, and the five of us follow in silence, the sound of the vehicles on the gravel above becoming fainter as we descend.
