Chapter 4 - A Truth Unknown

Inside the grand palace, Ryuo stood before his wardrobe, arranging his belongings in silence. Everything was ready for his return to the academy, but his heart was different now. This time, he felt no fear or anxiety—only excitement.

On the other side, his father, the duke, donned his heavy coat, prepared to accompany his son for the first time. It was not mere curiosity; he wanted to see with his own eyes the world his son had chosen… and the two friends who had changed his life.

Upon arriving at the academy, Ryuo bid his father farewell at the gate and went to his room, while the duke continued toward the administration.

Seated before the academy directors, he did not expect to hear words that would change his perspective entirely.

"Ryuo is talented, but he was alone… despised by the other nobles," one administrator said firmly, then added slowly: "Without Karl and Edric, he would not have endured here."

The duke's expression shifted briefly, though he remained composed.

"They stood by him in everything—harsh training, battles, even against nobles who tried to trap him. They were not just companions; they became his true family inside the academy."

The duke lowered his head slightly, deep in thought. Then he asked quietly:

"Tell me about these two friends."

One administrator glanced at another, then smiled faintly:

"They are not merely friends. They are sword and shield—the reason your son became more than just a noble name."

An Encounter That Shook the Duke

Karl and Edric returned to their room after the long journey, exhaustion clear on their faces. But it quickly faded when they reunited with Ryuo. Their quiet laughter filled the room, a simple welcome.

Yet the calm did not last.

A knock at the door, and it swung open—revealing a tall, imposing man. The duke, Ryuo's father, entered with confident steps. But the moment his eyes fell on Karl… he froze.

Something strange happened.

The man's eyes, always cold as ice, widened in rare shock. His face, never showing weakness, paled for a moment.

No one understood what was happening. Karl himself stood stunned, glancing at Edric, then at Ryuo, searching for answers. But Ryuo looked equally shaken. He had never seen his father like this.

The duke said nothing. He gave them no chance to ask. He simply turned and left the room at once, his steps faster than when he had entered, as though something had shaken him to his core.

Silence filled the room. None of them knew how to respond. Even Ryuo had no words.

But the truth was there… hidden in the duke's shocked expression.

Karl's face carried a shadow of the past—of someone who was never meant to return.

The Shadow of the Fallen Emperor

Karl and his sister resembled someone… not just anyone, but the former emperor.

The man who lost his throne ten years ago, once the closest friend of Duke Lloyd—more than a friend, a brother not bound by blood.

When the old empire collapsed, the land was never the same. Honor and glory vanished, replaced by corruption, poverty, and deceit. And Lloyd himself was never the same.

The man who had once been loyal, joyful, and true became cold as frost. He no longer believed in bonds, friendship, or even family. He became a man who saw only interests and the ruthless political game he had been forced into.

But now… he had seen a ghost from his past. The features of the fallen emperor stood before him, in the face of a boy who should not exist.

The Council of Security

The questions raised by Duke Lloyd's encounter with Karl remained unanswered, lingering like a dark cloud.

That day, Karl, Edric, and Ryuo entered the Security Council. Passing through the heavy doors adorned with the academy's emblem, they found themselves in a vast hall filled with figures of power and influence.

They were the youngest among nobles and distinguished students, standing tall with elegance and pride, radiating authority.

Here, class was not just an idea—it was law.

Eyes turned toward them—some filled with disdain, others with hatred, and a few with curiosity.

The council leader stood before them, his stern features and piercing gaze commanding silence. His voice was calm, yet carried undeniable strength:

"The Security Council is not a privilege—it is a responsibility. But that does not mean you will earn respect easily. Everyone here has claimed their place through strength and character. Are you ready to do the same?"

Karl, Edric, and Ryuo did not hesitate. Each knew this was not merely an opportunity, but a challenge—a challenge they could not afford to lose.

And so… a new chapter began in their lives, where the sword would not be their only weapon. A different battle awaited them—one of minds, influence, and intrigue, where survival belonged not only to the strongest, but to the wisest and most cunning.

Not all members of the council were as expected. Many were arrogant or reserved, but others seemed more understanding—perhaps even friendly.

When Karl, Edric, and Ryuo stood before them, the gazes varied. Some looked at them with suspicion, while others were eager to see new faces.

One student, a young man with blond hair and gray eyes, stepped forward with a smile:

"At last, some new faces!"

That was enough to break some of the tension. Despite their lower status compared to the nobles, they were not met with hostility by everyone. Some students were more open, more willing to know them.

They sat together, exchanged words, and discovered that the council was a place for those who truly wished to grow stronger and protect the academy.

Yet they still had to prove themselves—not only with strength, but with courage.

Their days in the Security Council soon found their rhythm—patrolling the academy, monitoring students.

Lingering Tensions

Though more than a year had passed since the peace treaty between the empires, the academy was far from free of tension. Students from the other empire were hated by many, and some exploited every chance to stir chaos.

Fights, provocations, even hidden assaults… all unfolded under watchful eyes, as if the war had never ended.

The Relentless Routine

Karl, Edric, and Ryuo endured the exhausting routine—morning lectures followed by intense combat training until day's end. Responsibilities grew heavier, fatigue weighed on their bodies, yet they felt a sense of satisfaction.

That night, when they returned to their room, Edric and Ryuo collapsed onto their beds, surrendering to sleep. But Karl remained awake, his eyes fixed on the darkness, his thoughts sinking into the past.

Everything seemed ordinary… until his fingers touched the pendant hanging around his neck.

An old golden pendant, engraved with the symbol of a lion surrounded by two crossed swords.

He knew it was the last trace of his past, of his unknown parents, but he had never given it much thought before.

Yet his encounter with Duke Lloyd had awakened doubts he could not silence. The man's gaze, the shock on his face… all things Karl could not explain.

What had Lloyd seen in him? And why did the pendant feel heavier than a mere memory?

Karl clenched it tightly, as if searching for an answer buried within.

A Year of Trials

Days passed quickly, weeks turned into months, until a full year had gone by since their arrival at the academy. A year of harsh training, endless lectures, and patrols.

But the questions of the past continued to haunt Karl. The pendant never left him, as though waiting for the moment to reveal its secret.

Three months later came the holiday—but not the news they wanted. They were ordered to remain at the academy for security reasons, to oversee certain matters. They cursed their luck, longing for home.

A New Arrival

The academy buzzed with anticipation as the new year began, fresh students pouring through its ancient gates, each carrying dreams and ambitions.

Among them was Elena—her silver hair and shining eyes marking her presence. At fourteen, she clutched her bag tightly, gazing at the towering academy with a mix of passion and fear.

Her farewell to the orphanage had been no less emotional than Karl and Edric's. She had left behind the hands that raised her, the voices that sheltered her childhood. But unlike them, she was not a stranger here.

Karl's reputation had preceded her—known for his discipline in the Security Council and his strength in trials. His name made her welcome warmer.

Yet Elena cared little for fame. She walked with steady steps, her mind consumed by one thought:

"Here… I will become a botanist, as I always dreamed."

Obsessed with plants—healing herbs and poisonous ones alike—she could easily be called mad for them.

Reunion

As she stepped down from the carriage, her heart raced—not with fear, but excitement for the unknown.

Moments later, she spotted a familiar face among the crowd—Karl, standing tall, arms crossed, his eyes reflecting pride and relief.

Beside him was Edric, his familiar smile bringing her comfort. But what caught her attention most was the third boy she had never seen before.

Tall for his age, with dark black hair and sharp eyes that carried a calm yet calculating gaze, as if analyzing everything around him. She could not deny to herself—he was strikingly handsome.

She approached, and Karl embraced her warmly:

"Welcome to the academy, Elena. I imagine your journey was long."

She smiled confidently, then turned to Edric, who laughed:

"Ah, I can't believe you're finally here!"

Her eyes shifted to the silent boy. He met her gaze calmly before speaking in a steady voice:

"I am Ryuo… Karl and Edric's roommate."

She extended her hand, and they exchanged greetings. Together, they showed her the academy—the dorms, the halls, the training grounds.

New Bonds, Old Conflicts

Days passed quickly, and Elena found her place in the academy with ease. She made new friends, but always stayed close to Karl, Edric, and even Ryuo, who, despite his quiet nature, ensured he was part of their circle.

Yet the Security Council faced challenges they had not foreseen.

The academy remained tense. Students from the other empire were still despised, and some sought every chance to provoke chaos.

Fights, incitement, even hidden assaults… as if the war had never ended.

Karl and Edric, as council members, had to intervene in many of these disputes. But it was never simple.

One day, after breaking up a violent clash in the training yard, Karl stood with Edric and Ryuo, watching the scene.

Edric wiped sweat from his brow and muttered:

"If this continues, we'll end up with a war inside the academy itself."

Ryuo's crimson eyes scanned the dispersing students, his voice calm but firm:

"This is not just conflict between students… someone is benefiting from this."

Everyone knew there were those who did not want peace to last… and that the Security Council would not be merely a body to maintain order, but the final line of defense for the academy's stability.

An Unexpected Holiday… and Unforgettable Memories

Days passed quickly. Karl and Edric's skills grew, and even Elena proved herself diligent and ambitious. Her obsession with herbs and plants had already led her to medical training, turning her passion into valuable skill.

As the first semester neared its end, it was time for the three-month holiday. But this time, they did not want to spend it alone.

"Why don't you come with us to the orphanage?" Edric asked eagerly, turning to Ryuo, who hesitated.

Karl added: "It would be fun to spend the holiday with us instead of returning to the palace."

Ryuo had never known what family felt like—what it meant to be surrounded by people who loved you without duty or restraint. The orphanage, simple as it was, seemed like a new world.

After some thought, he sent a letter to his father asking permission. Everyone expected rejection… but the reply came swiftly, granting approval.

Ryuo could hardly believe it. Was it a trap? Or had his father changed?

For Karl, Edric, and Elena, there was no time for analysis. There was only one reason to celebrate: Ryuo would spend the holiday with them at the orphanage.

And so began the happiest three months of Ryuo's life.

A World of Warmth

Traveling by old carriage to the countryside, they arrived after a week's journey. Fields of wheat stretched endlessly, scattered cottages dotted the land, and the small village was unlike anything Ryuo had known. He was used to towering walls and grand halls, not this humble simplicity.

At the orphanage gates, Sister Marlene welcomed them with love, hugs, and tears of longing. For Ryuo, it was a warmth he had missed since his mother's death.

Nights at the orphanage were magical. Ryuo sat on the old stone steps, gazing at the star-filled sky, comparing two worlds.

Here, life was simple… but warm. Children's laughter filled the halls, playful quarrels ended quickly, and the smell of homemade food drifted from the small kitchen. Here, love was real—without masks or deceit.

There, in the palace… everything was cold, despite gold and silk. Wide corridors echoed with emptiness, servants bowed with hollow words, and banquets were masks of false promises.

Ryuo realized something he had never known before…

This was the life he wanted.

This was the family he never knew he needed.

The Shadow of War

Time passed swiftly, the holiday ended, leaving behind memories of laughter and meals by the river.

But elsewhere, the empire stood on the brink. Peace was only a fragile mask, torn apart by greed and betrayal.

The Empire of Lysorg—its name whispered with fear—was strong, but it had not forgotten past defeats. It waited for the moment of revenge.

In the shadows, nobles, generals, and merchants of war whispered in kings' ears, feeding the flames of conflict while sitting safely in their palaces.

Soldiers moved at the borders, fortresses prepared for siege, and the sky grew heavy, awaiting the storm.

Ryan of Lysorg

At the academy, another companion entered their lives—a boy from Lysorg, two years younger than Karl and Edric, but no less brave.

Ryan Lysorg.

His resemblance to Edric was uncanny—same sharp eyes, same hair, same brows. Many thought them brothers despite their different origins. Yet Ryan was calmer, less reckless, and perhaps that was why they bonded.

But one night, while changing after training, Edric noticed a golden pendant hanging from Ryan's neck. It was identical to his own—the same symbol, the same design.

His heart raced, but he hid his shock behind a calm smile.

"Could this be coincidence?"

He dared not ask. The government had grown harsher, executing anyone suspected of ties to the enemy empire without trial.

No one was safe.

Edric looked again at Ryan, then at the pendant… and chose silence—for now.

The Third Year – The Edge of War

By eighteen, Karl, Edric, and Ryuo had grown into young men, Elena seventeen. But the end none had wished for was near.

War was no longer rumor—it was reality, knocking at the academy's gates.

Ryan, and all students from Lysorg, were ordered to leave. The imperial command was clear: "Return immediately… war has begun."

That night, the friends gathered one last time. No laughter, no plans for duels or training. Only heavy silence.

"We'll meet again, won't we?" Edric asked softly.

Ryan looked at them—Karl, Edric, Ryuo, Elena—the family he had chosen. His answer was honest, painful:

"I don't know."

They all knew the truth. Next time, they might not meet as friends… but as enemies on the battlefield.

Ryan placed a hand on Edric's shoulder, smiling sadly:

"But if we face each other in war… don't raise your sword too quickly. I won't either."

With dawn, Ryan was gone.

The Gathering Storm

The war had not yet begun, but everyone knew it was only a matter of time. Clouds hung heavy, watching silently.

Karl and Edric returned to the orphanage, where Marlene hid her tears behind a fragile smile, embracing Elena tightly as if afraid she might never return.

Ryuo returned to the palace. The air was colder than ever as he stood before his father, Lloyd. No words were spoken—only gazes heavy with meaning.

But then, Lloyd approached Karl. The strong duke, the soldier of old, studied him intently. His voice was quiet, yet firm
