Chapter 3 - Children of Winter – A Beginning in a New World

Weeks of trials and adventures had changed them. They had crossed dark forests, strange villages, survived bandits and beasts. Karl and Edric were no longer the same as when they left the orphanage.

They had grown stronger—not only in skill with the sword, but in wisdom and vision. They learned that true strength lies not only in the arm, but in the heart and mind. Fierce against enemies, merciful to friends, loyal to those worthy of trust.

Arrival at the Capital – Another World

As they neared the capital, its silhouette rose like a city from legend. Towering walls, sky-reaching towers—but what struck them most was the sharp contrast within.

In the narrow alleys, poverty reigned—children starving, houses collapsing.

In the shining palaces, wealth overflowed—nobles drenched in gold, looking down with disdain.

Power twisted by the hands of the influential, dreams crushed beneath the feet of the merciless.

This was a world unlike the wilds, where dangers were clear and swords sufficed. Here, one had to know when to fight, when to think, and when to choose words as carefully as strikes in a hidden duel.

The Adventure Ahead Begins Now

Karl and Edric stood at the capital's gates. Time was short—the Academy awaited.

Thus ended their first adventure… and began a new story in the heart of the capital.

Children of Winter – At the Academy Walls

Before them rose the Academy, not just a fortress of training but a miniature city within the capital. High stone walls adorned with the kingdom's banners, guarded by towers where trained knights watched all who entered and left.

From atop those walls, the world unfolded before them—revealing what the capital hid behind its false glory.

In distant palaces, nobles moved like chess pieces in a ruthless game, where cunning mattered more than honor, and decisions shaped the fate of the land.

In the lower districts, poverty knelt, children begging, the weak crushed underfoot, unseen by the powerful.

Children of Winter – At the Academy Gates

In the markets, stories intertwined—between merchants, mercenaries, spies, and the poor chasing either a meal or a chance at survival. In the city's dark corners, whispers of conspiracies spread, unseen forces moving behind the curtain, waiting for any chance to extend their power.

This was a different world…

At the academy walls, there were not only ambitious knights seeking glory, but also arrogant noble sons protecting their privileges, children of soldiers striving to prove themselves, and orphans like Karl and Edric struggling to survive in a merciless world.

Here, the challenge was not only in combat, but in understanding this new world—knowing when to stand against an enemy, and when to bend so as not to break.

Karl and Edric… A Step Toward Destiny

Edric looked at Karl, his blue eyes reflecting caution and anticipation, and whispered:

"This is unlike anything we've faced before… here, our enemies may be closer than we think."

Karl gazed at the horizon, where the capital's grandeur and injustice loomed, and said quietly but firmly:

"This is no place for the innocent… but we are no longer children."

And so, with their first steps inside the academy, the greatest adventure of their lives began—an adventure where the sword alone would not suffice, where intelligence, alliances, and true strength would decide their fate in this harsh world.

Children of Winter – The Academy's Three Trials

Inside the academy, Karl and Edric quickly realized that life within these walls was no fairer than the world outside. Here, strength alone did not decide your fate, but also your status, lineage, and the allies you chose.

Many looked down on them simply because they were orphans. But they had not come all this way to retreat now.

The First Trial: The Written Exam

Knowledge is a weapon, just as the sword is.

The first test was far from combat, yet no less difficult. Candidates were gathered in a vast hall, each seated before a paper filled with questions on nature, botany, and biology:

• Which plants can be used as antidotes to poison?

• What is the fastest way to find a water source in the wild?

• How do organisms interact in an ecosystem to maintain balance?

It was not easy, especially for those without proper education. Noble children had studied these subjects for years, while Karl and Edric relied on their wits and the lessons of hardship from the orphanage and the road.

It was not about memorizing facts, but about thinking and adapting. By the end, they left the hall exhausted.

The Second Trial: The Forest Battle

Survival belongs to the clever, not only the strong.

This test was entirely different. Participants were divided into teams of four, tasked with capturing the flags of other teams before being caught.

• Losing your flag meant immediate elimination.

• The team that captured the most flags would win.

• Intelligence, stealth, and planning mattered more than brute force.

The Forest Battle and Betrayal

Karl and Edric joined with Marianne, a quick and cunning girl, and Louis, a quiet boy skilled at tracking. The team seemed solid—but in a world ruled by class and hidden interests, not everyone was what they appeared.

As they advanced, Edric noticed things were strangely easy. No ambushes, no traps—until suddenly, they were surrounded.

Five strong fighters emerged from the shadows, noble-born, their eyes full of confidence, as if they already knew their movements.

Karl turned to Marianne, who stood back, avoiding the fight, her weapon untouched.

"Marianne?" Edric asked in confusion, but saw guilt in her eyes before she raised her hands in surrender.

"I'm sorry…" she whispered.

The truth was clear: she had betrayed them.

The Trap

The attack began at once.

• Karl tried to block, but they were outnumbered.

• Edric barely deflected a strike, but was cornered.

• Louis, realizing too late, nearly struck one opponent before falling into another ambush.

Their flags were stolen, defeat seemed certain.

Revenge and Survival

Yet Karl refused to surrender.

• Edric threw dirt into an opponent's eyes, buying a chance to strike.

• Karl seized the moment, lunged, and reclaimed at least one flag.

• Louis, though wounded, escaped swiftly into the trees.

They did not win as planned, but they did not leave empty-handed.

As for Marianne? She left with those who had bought her loyalty, but was abandoned soon after, left alone at the end.

A Harsh but Necessary Lesson

After the trial, the three spoke little of betrayal. Karl's gaze grew colder, Edric learned not to trust easily, and Louis became quieter than ever.

They had learned a bitter truth of academy politics—alliances are not always what they seem, and not every bond deserves trust.

And this was only the beginning of the true battles awaiting them.

The Third Trial: Sword and Bow Duel – Lessons in Defeat and Victory

Days after the forest struggle, the third test arrived: direct combat with sword and bow.

The duelists stood in the grand arena, knights and masters gathered to watch. Tension and excitement filled the air, for everyone knew these battles would decide who were the strongest in the academy.

Children of Winter – The Draw: Fortune and Misfortune

Names were drawn at random, and when Karl and Edric saw the results, they breathed a sigh of relief—they would not face each other in the first round. Yet whoever won in each group would have to face the champions of other teams. There was no escape from fighting the best.

The Battles Begin – Lessons of the Road

The duels started, and as expected, there were swift victories and humiliating defeats. But for Karl and Edric, these fights were more than physical—they were a test of everything they had learned on their journey to the academy.

• Karl, with bravery, used agility and speed, dodging strikes with clever movements, reminding everyone he was not just a boy from the countryside.

• Edric, with his precise aim, never missed a target, using his skill in analysis and planning to strike opponents before they reached him.

• The battles stretched for days, each day bringing a new lesson.

Karl's Final Duel – An Unfinished Legend

At the end of the week, Karl faced the strongest fighter of the first division.

It was an epic clash:

• Blows were fast, each predicting the other's moves, blocking, attacking, maneuvering.

• The audience was captivated, even the instructors fell silent, watching as though it were a duel between true knights, not mere students.

• But in the end, Karl did not win.

It was not weakness—his opponent was simply more experienced, more skilled, with tricks Karl had yet to learn. Still, Karl left the arena with his head held high, having fought bravely and proven himself a true warrior.

Edric… The Team's Last Hope

After a string of victories, Edric reached the final duel of the second division. His opponent? The same fighter who had defeated Karl.

This was not revenge born of hatred, but a challenge to prove themselves.

The battle was the longest—arrows flying, swords clashing, neither willing to fall. Yet in the end, despite all his effort, Edric too was defeated.

He lost—but with honor.

The Lesson of Defeat… and the Value of Learning

When the duel ended:

• Karl realized strength alone was not enough—he needed sharper strategies.

• Edric learned that even great skill can be overcome by greater experience.

• Most importantly, they understood their opponent was not an enemy, but a hidden teacher—someone to learn from, not to resent.

End of the Trials… The True Challenge Begins

They were not the best, but they were among the strongest. That alone was a great achievement.

In the end, these duels were only the beginning of a long journey in the world of knights. The path to greatness is not drawn by victories alone, but by defeats that teach you how to rise stronger.

A New Chapter – Meeting Ryuo

After the results were announced, there was no doubt—Karl and Edric had proven themselves in the academy. Though they lost in the final duel, they earned the respect of many, both instructors and fellow students.

Yet pride was not the only thing on their minds…

The champion who defeated them.

Who was he?

Not just a skilled fighter, but the son of a noble close to the emperor himself.

What was his name?

From which family did he come?

How had he trained to reach such strength?

All these questions filled their thoughts. And there was only one way to find answers—meeting him in person.

An Unexpected Shock – Shared Quarters

After a long day, the new students were guided to their dormitories. When Karl and Edric stood before their room door, they did not expect the surprise waiting inside.

The room was for three students…

And the third?

The very fighter who had defeated them—Ryuo.

Joy surged within Karl and Edric for a moment, though they hid their excitement, keeping calm before him.

Inside the room were:

• Three neatly arranged beds.

• Personal lockers for each student.

• The academy's official uniforms, folded carefully on the tables.

As warm rays of sunlight slipped through the windows, a new day began inside the academy. Karl and Edric had to adapt quickly—to learn more about the world of knights, the academy's rules, and their new roommate, Ryuo… the mysterious noble.

After waking, Karl and Edric tried to speak with him, but all their attempts failed. He was cold, formal, uninterested. He barely looked at them, answering only with short, clipped words, as if communication was unnecessary. Yet behind his arrogant appearance, there was another side—one burning with curiosity to know more about them. He wanted to talk, laugh, make friends, but he could not. His father's warning echoed in his mind:

"Nobles do not mix with the poor."

Those words trapped him behind a mask of indifference, locking him in isolation despite his desire to break free.

A New Day… A Greater Challenge

Karl and Edric had only one choice: to prove themselves—not just to Ryuo, but to everyone. They had to excel in lectures, endure the harsh training, and show that poverty was no barrier to greatness.

Thus, with the first day inside the academy, another journey began—perhaps harder than any adventure they had faced before.

Shadows of War and Peace

The introductory lectures gathered all new students in the grand hall, where they received their first instructions about rules, systems, and expectations.

But this was no ordinary year. For the first time in academy history, students from the rival empire were allowed to enroll, as part of a fragile peace treaty between the two kingdoms.

Thirteen years of war… could peace truly endure?

The war had torn both nations apart, leaving destruction, poverty, and blood that could not easily be forgotten. Now, after the treaty, a clause permitted children of the other empire to join the academy. Yet the question lingered: could peace survive in hearts still beating with hatred?

Meeting Ryuo – The Silent Noble

Amid this tension, Karl and Edric learned their roommate's name: Ryuo.

He was their age, with jet-black hair and crimson eyes. From a prestigious family. Yet he remained a closed mystery. He showed no interest in them, though his gaze silently observed everything. He understood the political tensions, and knew this year would be more than study and training.

The Academy of Rivalries

In the wide dining hall, students sat at tables arranged by social rank. Karl and Edric noticed something unusual:

"Ryuo sits alone."

Though a noble, he was not surrounded by followers or friends. He did not sit with the other high-born students.

Karl and Edric did not hesitate. They walked straight to his table, sat across from him as if it were natural, and began speaking to him like old friends.

Ryuo's response was cold:

"You should not be here."

His voice was low, his gaze steady.

"You must not sit here… you will disturb the others."

He did not mean himself, but the other nobles. He knew their presence could anger them, bringing him trouble he could not afford.

But the truth was more complicated. Ryuo was not trusted among the nobles. Despite his high status, everyone feared him—not for his own strength, but because of his family.

"Ryuo's family had been close to the old emperor before his fall ten years ago."

The new nobles, loyal to the current regime, did not trust him. Knights of the new order saw him as a shadow of a bygone era. Even commoners looked at him with suspicion, as if his family might betray them at any moment.

Thus, Ryuo carried burdens since childhood, knowing he had to grow strong enough to protect himself and his family.

Breaking the Walls of Isolation

Karl and Edric ignored his warning, paying no attention to the nobles' glares. They continued speaking with him, asking about his training, his studies, even his life outside the academy.

At first, Ryuo remained reserved, answering in short sentences, keeping his calm mask. But slowly, he began to open up. He spoke of his strict routine, how he trained twice as hard to prove himself. He spoke of the subjects he studied, the ones he found dull or fascinating. He even shared fragments of his childhood—something he had not done in years.

For the first time, he forgot the rules. He forgot the warnings about mixing with the poor. He forgot the weight of others' eyes. He simply enjoyed the moment.

The walls of isolation he had built around himself began to crack. Deep inside, he felt something strange yet comforting—as if these two boys might change his life in ways he had never expected.

That day, their first true friendship was born inside the academy. And with time, it would grow stronger than they could imagine.

Children of Winter – Hidden Conspiracies

Not all students were pleased with their presence, especially the nobles who saw them as a threat to their status. They faced sabotage during training, attempts to trap them with the instructors, and even dangerous situations that nearly cost them their lives.

But they were not alone.

At first, Karl and Edric thought their friendship with Ryuo would remain just a bond within the academy. Yet over time, he became more than a friend. He stood by them in every battle, trained with them, shared knowledge and skills. Together, they grew far stronger than they had ever imagined.

Training Like No Other

The training was harsh, but with Ryuo, they learned the secrets of noble combat, dueling tactics, and strategic thinking. Karl became more disciplined and skilled with the sword. Edric sharpened his archery and tactical deception.

After a full semester, shadows still watched them in silence, plotting to test them in the harshest ways.

The Summons

It was a cloudy day, the winter sun barely piercing the gray sky, as if afraid to disturb the quiet that hung over the academy. In the wide courtyard, students moved busily, finishing their last drills before the semester's end. Amid the noise, whispers spread quickly, filled with surprise:

"The administration summoned them?"

Karl, Edric, and Ryuo walked through the stone corridors, their footsteps echoing against the ancient walls. The summons was unexpected, and rarely carried good news.

The hall was vast, lit by golden lamps reflecting off banners of the academy's legacy. Behind the long table sat the administrators, their gazes mixed—some sharp as blades, others glowing with silent admiration.

The three exchanged glances. There were no seats for them, as if they were not invited to sit, but to stand trial before a hidden court.

One elder spoke, his stern features commanding silence:

"Karl and Edric, you were the first to succeed in the forest trial during the entrance exam. Though one of your team fell, you prevailed, and it is noted here in our council. And you, Ryuo, were the strongest, defeating your opponents in single combat."

He paused, his eyes gleaming with a strange mix of pride and suspicion.

"And through the semester, with your strong marks in dueling and combat skills… it has been decided that you three will join the Academy Security Council starting next term."

A charged silence filled the hall. No first-year student had ever been chosen for the Security Council.

Edric raised an eyebrow in shock.

"Security Council?" Karl echoed.

The elder nodded firmly.

The three exchanged glances again. Yet there was no hesitation in their eyes. Karl smiled with confidence, Edric crossed his arms with excitement, and Ryuo bowed slightly with respect, saying in a calm voice:

"We honor your decision and thank the council for choosing us. We will strive to meet your expectations."

Thus, this step marked the beginning of a new chapter in their journey.

Return to the Roots

The holiday finally arrived. Three months separated them from the next semester, from new challenges, from the Security Council and its responsibilities. But before all that, each had a path to return to—a place tied to their past, whether filled with warmth or with cold.

Karl and Edric did not hesitate. An old wooden carriage awaited them at the academy gates, bound for the countryside, for the place where their lives had begun.

The orphanage.

Everything was the same—the faded walls, the small garden, the whispering trees. As soon as they crossed the gate, the sound of the little bell rang, announcing their arrival.

Sister Marianne stood at the threshold, tears shining in her eyes before she embraced them with unchanged warmth.

They did not wait to sit, but rushed into telling her everything—about their adventures, the academy, the hardships, and about Ryuo.

The children gathered around, eyes wide with wonder, as if listening to tales from another world.

"So…" Marianne said at last, her voice warm, "You have truly become heroes."

Karl smiled faintly and replied:

"Not yet… but we are on the way."

Ryuo's Return to the Palace

Ryuo returned to the ancient palace, adorned with medals, banners, and glory—but inside, it was empty, cold, silent. The walls bore witness to long history, yet had not heard laughter in decades.

At the long table sat his father, the duke, a man with sharp eyes carrying the weight of generations. Ryuo sat opposite him, calm and composed, as he had always been taught.

His father had heard of his "unwanted friends." Yet instead of anger, something else flickered in his eyes… curiosity.

"So…" the duke said, his voice heavy as stone, "How did those two paupers… influence you so deeply?"

Ryuo paused, then answered, his gaze steady:

"Because they act not as others expect… but as they believe."

His father watched him in silence, closing his eyes briefly, as if seeing in his son traits he had never expected—traits of someone he perhaps did not want him to become.

Days passed slowly for Ryuo in the palace, where decorated walls hid a frightening silence. Everything followed routine—the servants moved quietly, meals were served without words, even the air felt cold, as if life itself refused to enter.

But inside, Ryuo longed for the holiday's end. Not only to escape the palace, but to reunite with his friends, to return to the place that had become more than just an academy.

His father, however, waited for something else. His silence was not surrender, but deep thought. When the holiday ended, he would ride his grand carriage to the academy—not only to return his son, but to see for himself why the academy had placed him in the Security Council, and how he had achieved such honor in just one year.

He knew this was not merely a privilege, but a responsibility—and a danger.

Yet above all, he wanted to meet those two friends who had somehow broken through his son's icy isolation. He did not understand how his son, raised on strict rules and aristocratic pride, had chosen to befriend two commoners—willingly.

And that curiosity gnawed at the duke's mind.

What did they look like? How did they speak? What made them different?

He had to know… before it was too late.

As the holiday neared its end, anxiety crept into Marianne's heart. Karl and Edric were preparing to return to the academy…

Above all, Karl had to leave his sister behind once again. Sister Marianne stood at the orphanage gate, her wide eyes filled with both pride and sorrow.

"You'll come next year, won't you?" Karl asked, forcing a steady smile.

She nodded, placing her small hands in his. "Of course… I'll be there."

Edric laughed and patted her head. "Alright then."

She smiled shyly but said nothing more.

Marianne watched them silently, hiding her tears behind her warm gaze. She knew these children she had raised were no longer just orphans searching for a place in the world—they had already become heroes walking their own path.

As the carriage carried them away, Marianne waved until they vanished from sight, wishing in her heart that this farewell was only another stop along their long journey.
