Chapter 65 - What Mara Says

CHAPTER 67

What Mara Says

He talked for four hours.

They were in Building Seven because Mara found it easier to process large information in a familiar work environment — she had told him this early on, the first week, when he had noted that she came to the workshop rather than her office for the most difficult specification problems. He had never asked why. He simply knew it, and arranged the four-hour conversation accordingly.

He told her the full scope. The System — not just the exchange ledger and the cultivation paths, but its age, its purpose, its connection to the bloodline and the nine realms. The Throne that had been empty for ten thousand years. The Unraveling. The Void Collective. The map with three occupied territories. The Dream World and what he had found there — the Pre-Adamic age, the Watchers, the Nephilim, the flood era's repository, the forty-three codices and the Watcher Origin Record.

He told her about the multiverse's structure as the Watcher record described it: nine realms, each with its own physical laws at varying degrees of divergence from Earth's, each with its own civilisations and intelligences, all of them connected through the structural framework that the first King had maintained and that had been drifting into incoherence for ten thousand years without a sovereign.

He told her about the Immortal Sovereign path and what achieving it meant, and what the System understood his ultimate purpose to be.

He told her about his mother and the eleven years of preparation and the fish crate and the heater in the children's room and the Spirit Anchor Token in his pocket.

Mara listened to all of it.

She did not interrupt. She asked three questions across four hours, each at the moment of a specific technical detail she wanted clarified rather than from disbelief or resistance. The questions were: what is the physical mechanism of the Spirit Path's cultivation? How does the Dream World's time ratio affect long-duration exploration? And — at the description of the Nephilim alloy — can the molecular reinforcement principle be reproduced without the Builder Stone as the base material?

When he finished, she was quiet for approximately two minutes. He waited.

Then she said: 'The Nephilim alloy's properties are three times the carbon-void composite's strength at forty percent of the mass.'

'Yes,' he said.

'If the molecular reinforcement principle can be reproduced in the current manufacturing environment, it changes the spacecraft hull specification.'

'Yes,' he said.

'And the palace programme's second phase.'

'Yes.'

'And the submarine hull depth rating.'

'Yes.'

She nodded. 'Right. I'll have the research division begin the molecular analysis on the alloy sample today.' She looked at the forty-three codices stacked carefully on the workshop bench. 'I'll need a translation team.'

'The Neural Lattice has a working decode of the Watcher-era script,' he said. 'I can provide the foundation vocabulary. Your team needs linguists with pattern-matching capacity — people who can work from a partially decoded base and extend it.'

'I know two,' she said. 'And the medical codex — the twenty-seven diseases. I want a parallel track on that immediately. The research division will have a medical team alongside the materials team.'

He looked at her.

She looked back. 'You told me four hours of the most extraordinary information in human history,' she said, 'and you know what I keep coming back to? The twenty-seven diseases. Because the rest of it — the nine realms, the Throne, the multiverse, all of it — that is yours. That is your path. But twenty-seven diseases are people. Specific people. People who are alive right now, today, dying from things that someone in a river city on the other side of the Flood had already solved.' She paused. 'That's the part I want to fix first.'

He thought about his mother's letters. He thought about the fish crate and the heater and what it meant to do the thing that was right because the need was clear and the ability was present and there was no valid reason not to. He thought about Mara arriving at his door with graphite on her wrist and going straight for component nine.

He thought: she is exactly the right person.

'The medical track,' he said. 'Today. Whatever resources the division needs.'

'Already have them,' she said, and turned to the first codex.
