Chapter 6 - The Warrior and the Loner

Veil rushed at a random goblin in front of him who was holding a shield. The green booger didn't even see it coming. He kicked the goblin down, managing to make it bleed. Just like the world he was from, the monsters here seemed to bleed red too. Unfortunately, while he was doing all of this, some goblin with a bow shot him, and an arrow landed in his upper abdomen, causing some damage and making him bleed. But Veil had no time to worry about that and picked up the shield the goblin had dropped when he rushed him before running deeper into the darkness — the part of the cave that hadn't been lit up. The place he could stay for a while, and no goblin would be able to see him, and the shield would ensure they couldn't shoot random arrows to kill him.

Then Veil did something completely out of character for himself — he mocked the goblins, something he ordinarily would never do. In fact, he had never sounded more cocky or confident in his entire life. "Pathetic short orcs, come on, come get me." He did this maybe because the shield and darkness protected him, but could he really kill 60 goblins? Maybe if he used his unique skill, but he was unfamiliar with it. Hell, he didn't even know how to kill.

"Can I really win even with my unique skill? To hell with it. On the count of 3 I'm rushing in. I don't have all day." Those were Veil's last thoughts before a countdown began for the goblins. To Veil, he seemed powerless to these goblins. He was a monster pretending to be a weak, fragile, pathetic human.

A hot‑headed young swordsman goblin rushed into the darkness after Veil. He didn't care about the unknown; all he knew was that his family lived in this cave and that letting this so‑called human in would jeopardize everything he knew.

Veil saw this goblin, and a sadistic thought filled his mind. "What if I killed him? What if I threw his body out into the light after? Why am I thinking like that? Since when had I thought like this?"

[unique skill: Belphegor lvl: 1 activated]

The goblin kept on walking. It was screeching — maybe that was just the language goblins used. That was honestly Veil's best guess, and if he was wrong, why would it matter? Either he was going to die or they were. Then the goblin stopped. It seemed to have lost its will to fight, or maybe just its will to live. "Is this an effect of my unique skill? Seems quite powerful." Veil's thoughts on his unique skill were not wrong. This skill is a truly terrifying one, the kind that most would covet.

Veil walked towards the goblin and slit its throat. Blood fell out of the wound. The goblin didn't make a sound, as if death was just rest for it, as if the world truly was just a bother. Makes you wonder how a goblin that was just hot‑headed a second ago ended up like this — from a hot‑headed idiot ready to protect his people to someone ready to accept death as if it were rest. The way a sin such as Sloth can affect the mind like this is truly terrifying.

"Rest well, warrior. Hopefully you make it to that place called Valhalla from Norse mythology. Doesn't matter, just don't end up in hell. From what I know, it totally sucks." Veil said that because he admired the goblin's courage to fight an unknown enemy in shadows and his willingness to die for the people he loves. How admirable — his death was on a battlefield as a brave soldier, while Veil's own death was in a back alley alone, never getting to say goodbye to his mother, see his new niece his sister brought home, practice in his father's dojo one last time, or even beat his little brother in that video game he loved so much. Did they cry at his death? Were they even sad? Oh, how he wondered. Luckily he didn't have to worry much about them, as his mother inherited his grandma's house last year and he had a partial scholarship, so they didn't waste too much money on him. These goblins reminded him of his own family, which hurt a lot. Just another reason to kill these clover‑colored monkeys.

With a quick blur, 9 goblins rushed at Veil's general location. The shadows may have hid him, but the slight noise made when he killed that hot‑headed warrior was enough for these sharp‑sensed, pig‑nosed neanderthalensis to rush in at him.

Three of the goblins were holding bows and already drawing arrows.

Four of them were holding swords and took stances as if they were one unified being — truly commendable comrades in arms.

Two of them were holding spears and exuded the air of a true soldier, almost on the level of a warrior.

These warriors had courage. Unfortunately, courage isn't enough if you're fighting a sin. Rushing in is stupid.

Veil was shot with three arrows, all hitting his left arm, forcing him to grab the shield and jump back farther into the shadows.

…Maybe rushing in is enough to end a sin.

Veil dared not make a sound. He may be bleeding to death, but it wouldn't be the first time.
