Chapter 27 - Chapter 28: The Weight of Whispers

By lunchtime

Everyone knew.

Or at least

They thought they did.

Tessa felt it before she even heard it.

The stares.

The way conversations paused when she walked past.

The way people leaned into each other

Whispering.

Watching.

Judging.

It crawled under her skin.

Made everything feel tighter.

Smaller.

Harder to breathe.

"…Ignore them," Lily muttered beside her, her tone sharp as she scanned the hallway.

"I'm trying," Tessa said quietly.

But she wasn't.

Not really.

Because ignoring something like this

Was impossible.

Especially when it followed you everywhere.

In class

It was worse.

The silence wasn't normal.

It wasn't calm.

It was… loaded.

Every small movement felt noticed.

Every shift of her chair

Every turn of a page

Like people were paying attention to things they never cared about before.

Tessa kept her eyes on her notebook.

Didn't look up.

Didn't react.

Because reacting would make it real.

And she wasn't ready for that.

A folded piece of paper slid onto her desk.

She froze.

Slowly

She opened it.

"So it's true? You really tried to kiss him?"

Her chest tightened instantly.

She crumpled the paper without responding.

But it didn't stop.

Another one came.

Then another.

Small.

Cruel.

Curious.

Each one worse than the last.

"Did he dare you or something?"

"You really thought he'd pick you?"

"That's embarrassing…"

Her fingers trembled slightly.

Not enough for anyone else to notice

But enough for her to feel it.

Lily leaned closer.

"…Give me that."

Tessa shook her head.

"It's fine."

"It's not fine."

"I said it's fine."

Her voice came out sharper than she meant.

Lily went quiet.

Watching her carefully now.

Because she knew.

Tessa wasn't fine.

She was holding it in.

And that?

Was never a good sign.

By the time class ended

The hallway felt suffocating.

Too many people.

Too many eyes.

Too many whispers that weren't quiet enough.

"Did you see her face?"

"She actually believed it meant something…"

"That's so sad."

Tessa walked faster.

Her grip tight around her bag.

Her chest tight.

Her thoughts louder than everything else.

This wasn't supposed to happen.

That moment

That almost

It wasn't supposed to become this.

It wasn't supposed to be something everyone could touch.

Twist.

Laugh at.

"Tessa, wait—"

She didn't stop.

Didn't turn.

Didn't slow down.

Because if she did

She might not be able to hold it together anymore.

The bathroom door slammed shut behind her.

Finally

Silence.

Or something close to it.

Tessa gripped the edge of the sink.

Her reflection staring back at her.

And for a second

She didn't recognize herself.

Not because she looked different.

But because of how she felt.

Exposed.

Small.

Stupid.

Her jaw tightened.

Because that part

That part hurt the most.

Not what people were saying.

Not Vanessa.

Not the whispers.

But the thought that maybe

They weren't completely wrong.

That maybe she had

Let herself believe something that wasn't real.

The door opened behind her.

Voices followed.

She didn't move.

Didn't turn.

Because she already knew.

"Is she here?"

A pause.

Then

A soft laugh.

"Oh wow… she is."

Tessa closed her eyes briefly.

Not this again.

Not here.

Not now.

"I didn't think she'd actually show her face today," another voice added.

"Why wouldn't she?" someone else said.

"She probably still thinks she has a chance."

More laughter.

Sharp.

Unkind.

Tessa's grip tightened against the sink.

"You guys are so mean," one girl said

But she was laughing too.

"That's what happens when you forget your place."

Silence.

Then

"And she thought it meant something…"

That one

That one landed.

Deep.

Because it wasn't loud.

It wasn't dramatic.

It was quiet.

Casual.

Like it was obvious.

Like it was true.

Tessa swallowed hard.

Because that was the thought she'd been trying to ignore.

The one she didn't want to face.

The one that hurt the most.

Did it mean something?

Or was it just

Another moment she misunderstood?

The door opened again.

Footsteps.

Fast.

Familiar.

"Alright, that's enough."

Lily.

Her voice cut through everything.

Cold.

Sharp.

Protective.

"Didn't anyone teach you how to mind your business?" she snapped.

The girls went quiet.

Not scared.

But surprised.

Because Lily wasn't someone you easily ignored.

"Relax," one of them said.

"We're just talking."

"Then talk somewhere else."

Silence.

Tense.

Then

A scoff.

"Whatever."

Footsteps.

The door opening.

Closing.

Gone.

Lily turned to Tessa immediately.

"Are you okay?"

Tessa nodded.

Too fast.

Too automatic.

"I'm fine."

Lily didn't believe her.

Not for a second.

But she didn't push.

Not yet.

Instead

She stepped closer.

Lowered her voice.

"You don't have to deal with this alone."

Tessa's throat tightened slightly.

Because she knew that.

She did.

But that didn't make it easier.

"…I know."

Her voice was quieter now.

Less steady.

And Lily heard it.

Of course she did.

She always did.

Outside

Across the hallway

Adrian stood still.

Watching the bathroom door.

His jaw tight.

His expression unreadable.

But his thoughts

Anything but calm.

Because he heard enough.

More than enough.

And that?

That didn't sit right with him.

At all.

His hands clenched slightly at his sides.

Because this wasn't just whispers anymore.

It wasn't just rumors.

It was turning into something else.

Something bigger.

Something he couldn't ignore.

And the worst part?

She was handling it alone.

Trying to.

And he knew

That wouldn't last.

Not like this.

Not when everyone was watching.

Not when everything was closing in.

Adrian exhaled slowly.

Because now

It wasn't just about her feelings.

Or his.

Now

It was about damage.

And whether he was going to stop it

Or let it happen.
