Chapter 35 - Chapter 35: The Shape of Hunger

The second exchange didn't begin with movement.

It began with silence.

Kael stood still, watching the figure.

The figure watched back.

No fire.

No motion.

Just… awareness.

"You're not attacking," Kael said.

The figure's voice was calm. "You're not ready."

Kael frowned. "You said to show you."

"And you are," it replied. "Every moment you stand there."

Kael felt irritation rise—but it didn't turn into heat.

That alone felt strange.

The flame inside him pulsed again.

Curious.

"Then what are you looking for?" Kael asked.

A pause.

Then—

"Hunger."

The word landed heavier than expected.

Kael's jaw tightened. "I'm not a monster."

The figure stepped closer.

"You fed."

Kael's breath hitched—just slightly.

The creature from before.

The ash.

Lira's voice echoed in his memory: You fed.

"That was survival," Kael said.

"No," the figure replied. "That was instinct."

Another step.

Closer now.

"Do you feel it?" it asked.

Kael didn't answer.

Because he did.

Not strong.

Not overwhelming.

But there.

A pull.

Toward flame.

Toward energy.

Toward more.

The Ember Core pulsed in agreement.

"Yes," the figure said softly. "There it is."

Lira moved forward this time. "That's enough."

Her voice cut through the moment.

Sharp.

Protective.

The figure's gaze shifted to her.

And for the first time—

It paused.

"…You," it said quietly.

Lira stilled.

Kael noticed immediately.

"You know her?" he asked.

The figure didn't respond to him.

It only studied Lira.

"Unfinished," it murmured.

Lira's expression hardened. "Don't."

Kael stepped between them instinctively.

"Back off."

The figure's attention returned to him.

And the faintest flicker of amusement passed through its flame.

"Protective," it noted.

Then—

It stepped back.

"Interesting."

But Kael felt it.

The shift.

This wasn't just about him anymore.

Something had changed.
