Chapter 18 - Chapter 18

Charts and financial reports illuminated the massive screen behind them as the executives began presenting one after another, their voices careful, measured.

But Valerie Sterling sat at the head of the table with unreadable calm, one hand resting lightly against the arm of her chair while the other flipped through the documents placed before her.

Every movement she made carried quiet authority.

No wasted expressions.

No unnecessary reactions.

Only control.

"The expansion is progressing faster than projected," one executive explained cautiously. "If negotiations continue smoothly, we should secure majority ownership within the next quarter."

Valerie glanced through the file briefly.

"Should?" she repeated softly.

The man immediately stiffened.

"We will," he corrected quickly.

"Better."

Silence followed.

Her assistant stood nearby with a tablet in hand, already taking notes before instructions were fully spoken. Years beside Valerie, she had taught him one thing—hesitation was fatal.

Another executive cleared his throat nervously before speaking.

" Some shareholders believe the company is moving too aggressively under your leadership."

Valerie finally looked up.

Sharp eyes swept across the room slowly, intelligently, almost dangerously calm.

"And yet profits have doubled under my leadership," she said.

No one answered.

Because no one could.

She stood from her chair then, heels clicking softly against the marble floor as she walked toward the towering windows overlooking the city.

From behind, she looked untouchable.

Like someone born to command.

"This company was failing before I took over," she continued evenly. "The board was weak. Investors were pulling out. Competitors were circling like vultures."

She turned slightly, her gaze settling on them again.

"I rebuilt this empire in five years."

Five years ago, her father died and no one was there to take over and she did.

The room remained painfully quiet.

Not out of fear alone—

but respect.

Because every word was true.

Valerie had inherited a dying corporation after her father's sudden death. Most people expected her to fail within months. Newspapers called her too young. Too emotional. Too inexperienced.

She buried every prediction herself.

Now Sterling Enterprises stood at the top of the global market while the same men who once doubted her sat nervously in her office awaiting approval.

Her assistant stepped forward carefully.

"Ma'am, the legal team is waiting for your signature on the merger documents."

"Leave them."

The assistant nodded immediately and stepped back.

At that moment, one of the older executives hesitated before speaking again.

"There's another issue."

Valerie's expression didn't change. "Go on."

"The Wilson Group."

The atmosphere shifted instantly.

Several executives exchanged uncomfortable glances.

"They've started moving into our territory faster than expected," another man explained. "Three investors already pulled support after meeting with Ben Wilson last week."

Valerie walked back toward the table slowly.

"And?"

The men looked uncertain.

Finally, one admitted carefully, "We believe he's targeting Sterling Enterprises directly."

A faint smile appeared on her lips then.

Not amusement.

Interest.

She took the tablet from her assistant and reviewed the report herself, eyes scanning every detail with unnerving speed.

Ben Wilson .

Ian McKellen's brother in law. A brother to Ian's wife, Melissa.

Brilliant.

Ruthless.

A CEO whose rise in the business world had become almost legendary.

Most men feared competition.

Valerie enjoyed it.

She closed the tablet calmly and handed it back.

"Schedule a meeting with him."

The executives blinked.

One of them frowned. "Ma'am, with all due respect, Ben Wilson isn't someone easy to negotiate with."

Another added carefully, "He has a reputation for dismantling partnerships once they stop benefiting him."

Valerie reached for her coffee without the slightest concern.

"So do I."

Silence.

Then she took a slow sip before speaking again.

"If Ben Wilson wants to challenge me…"

Her gaze lifted, cold and elegant.

"…then let him come personally". Cause she knows the reason.
