Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 – “They Laughed at Me… Until I Devoured Their Magic”

"Yesterday, I was nothing. Today… their magic feels like it belongs to me."

Noctra Academy didn't forget.

By morning, everyone already knew her name.

Aria could feel it the moment she stepped out of the lower dormitory. The whispers didn't even try to hide this time. They followed her across the courtyard, sharp and curious.

"She's the one from last night."

"I heard something attacked the dorm."

"And she's still alive?"

Aria kept walking, her expression calm, almost distant.

Inside, it wasn't calm at all.

The fear was still there, sitting quietly beneath everything else. The confusion hadn't gone anywhere either.

But now, there was something new.

Something heavier.

Every time she passed someone, she felt it.

Their magic.

Not just as a presence, but as something tangible. Different textures, different rhythms, each one alive in its own way.

And her body reacted.

Not with rejection.

With interest.

Her fingers twitched slightly as if reaching for something that wasn't hers.

"…stop," she muttered under her breath.

The feeling didn't listen.

By the time she reached the training hall, the noise hit her all at once.

Students crowded around the arena, voices rising with anticipation. But when she stepped inside, the atmosphere shifted almost instantly.

Heads turned.

Whispers sharpened.

"So she actually came."

"This should be quick."

Aria ignored them, but something else caught her attention.

The arena walls.

Runes were carved deep into the stone, faintly glowing. They weren't fully active, but she could feel them—like something half-awake.

For a brief second, that same pulse from the night before brushed against her senses.

Low. Distant.

Watching.

Her brows knit slightly.

"…not now," she whispered.

"First-year combat assessment begins."

The instructor's voice cut through the noise, steady and commanding. The room fell quiet.

"Names will be called. Step forward when assigned."

A pause.

Then—

"Aria Valen."

The reaction was immediate.

A few laughs broke out, low and expectant.

"Oh, this is going to be embarrassing."

"She won't last a second."

Aria stepped into the arena anyway, her movements steady.

"Dorian Valtor."

That name changed the mood.

Dorian stepped forward with an easy confidence, a smirk already forming. Fire magic flickered at his fingertips, barely contained.

"Guess I got the easy match," he said, looking her over.

His tone wasn't cruel.

Just certain.

From the upper balcony, someone leaned against the railing, watching closely.

Ren Kael's gaze stayed fixed on Aria, sharp and calculating.

"…show me," he murmured.

Behind him, barely visible in the shadows, Lucien watched in silence.

"Begin."

Dorian moved first.

Flames ignited in his hand, expanding rapidly into a dense fireball. He didn't hold back. The attack came fast, faster than most first-years could react to.

The crowd leaned forward.

Waiting.

Aria didn't step back.

She moved forward.

Even she didn't fully understand why.

Her hand lifted instinctively just as the fire reached her.

The explosion swallowed her completely.

Heat flared. Light burst outward.

Gasps echoed through the hall.

"That's it—"

But something was wrong.

The flames didn't spread.

They collapsed.

Pulled inward, drawn toward a single point.

Toward her.

Aria's breath hitched as the fire sank into her body.

It burned—but not in a way that hurt.

It felt like fuel.

Like something she was meant to take.

Her core reacted instantly, breaking the magic apart and reshaping it.

Understanding it.

Her vision sharpened.

The world slowed just enough for her to see what she hadn't before.

Magic wasn't random.

It had structure.

Flow.

Weakness.

"…I can see it," she whispered.

When the flames disappeared completely, she was still standing.

Unharmed.

The entire hall fell silent.

Dorian's expression cracked.

"…what?"

Aria lifted her hand.

The magic she had taken responded immediately.

This time, it wasn't wild.

It obeyed.

Fire gathered in her palm, denser than before, more stable. Even she could feel the difference.

She didn't hesitate.

The blast shot forward.

Dorian barely had time to react before it hit him head-on, sending him crashing across the arena. The impact echoed as his body struck the ground hard enough to fracture the stone beneath him.

Silence followed.

Dorian coughed, struggling to push himself up, his expression no longer confident.

"That's… not possible…"

Aria stood where she was, her breathing steady.

But inside, the hunger stirred again.

Because she could still feel it.

His magic hadn't disappeared.

It was still there.

Still within reach.

Her body leaned forward slightly without her noticing.

Just a little closer…

Her fingers twitched.

Take more.

"…no."

She forced herself to stop.

Barely.

Up on the balcony, Ren's gaze sharpened.

"…she held back."

Interest flickered into something more dangerous.

"…interesting."

Behind him, Lucien smiled faintly.

"So it begins."

"Match concluded."

The instructor stepped forward, his tone cautious now.

"Aira Valen wins."

This time, the whispers weren't mocking.

They were uneasy.

"She absorbed it…"

"That's not normal…"

"What kind of ability is that?"

Aria turned away before anyone could stop her.

She didn't feel like staying.

Not when something inside her was still moving.

Outside the hall, the air felt colder.

Students who had mocked her earlier now stepped aside without being told.

A first-year hesitated before approaching her.

"What… what was that?" he asked.

Aria paused.

She looked at her hand, then back at him.

"…I devour magic."

Her tone was quiet, but it made him instinctively take a step back.

She didn't wait for another question.

As she walked away, she felt it again.

That pulse.

Stronger now.

Closer.

Something beneath the academy was responding to her.

Aware of her.

"...what are you?" she murmured.

No answer came.

But she could feel it watching.

That night, a black envelope waited on her desk.

It hadn't been there before.

Aria frowned slightly before picking it up. The paper felt heavier than it should.

Not normal.

She broke the seal.

Inside, a single message was written in precise, elegant script.

"We know what you are."

Her fingers tightened slightly.

"You should not exist."

Her breathing slowed.

"Do not lose control."

A pause.

Then the final line.

"Or we will erase you."

Aria stared at the letter for a long moment.

Fear should have come first.

But it didn't.

Instead, something else rose up quietly.

A faint smile touched her lips.

"…try."

Deep inside her, the hunger pulsed again.

Stronger.

More certain.

Yesterday, they laughed at her.

Today, they were starting to understand.

And soon—

they would learn what it meant

to be hunted.
