This wasn't a test.
It was a warning.
And somehow, Aira knew she was the target.
The forest beyond Noctra Academy had always been off-limits. No one needed reminders or rules to stay away. The moment you stepped past the boundary, you could feel it.
The air changed.
Heavier.
Quieter.
Like something was breathing just beneath the surface.
Tonight, that feeling was stronger than ever.
Aira stopped at the edge of the treeline, her eyes fixed on the darkness ahead. Her pulse wasn't steady anymore. It had a strange rhythm to it now, something close to anticipation.
Because she could feel it.
That presence.
It wasn't just powerful.
It felt wrong.
"…this isn't natural," she muttered.
Behind her, a small group of students lingered at a safe distance. None of them dared to step closer. They didn't need to see it yet to understand the danger.
They could already feel it.
The ground trembled.
Slow at first, then heavier, like something massive was shifting beneath the earth.
Then it stepped into view.
The forest seemed to fall silent around it.
The creature towered over the trees, its body wrapped in black, molten-like scales that shifted unnaturally, as if they weren't entirely solid. Faint cracks of glowing energy pulsed beneath the surface, leaking out in uneven waves.
Its eyes burned a deep crimson.
Not wild.
Not empty.
Aware.
Aira's chest tightened.
"…it's looking at me."
Not the group behind her.
Not the academy in the distance.
Her.
Footsteps approached quietly from behind.
Ren stopped beside her, his gaze locked onto the creature.
"This isn't random," he said.
Aira didn't answer, but she didn't need to.
She already knew.
The pull in her chest wasn't reacting to danger.
It was reacting to something else entirely.
To the creature.
To its magic.
To the idea of consuming it.
The monster moved without warning.
It didn't hesitate or test the distance. It lunged straight at her.
Aira barely raised her arm before the impact hit.
The force threw her backward, slamming her into the ground hard enough to crack the surface beneath her. Pain shot through her body, sharp and immediate.
"…fast," she breathed.
Faster than anything she had faced.
And stronger.
Before she could stand, magic exploded from behind her.
Flames, lightning, shards of earth. Dozens of spells collided with the creature at once.
They vanished on contact.
No damage.
Not even a mark.
A heavy silence followed.
"…we can't hurt it," someone whispered.
That realization spread quickly.
This wasn't something they could fight.
Aira pushed herself up slowly, ignoring the ache in her body.
Something inside her was waking up.
The Devour core pulsed hard, almost painfully.
Hungry.
Her fear didn't disappear.
It twisted into something else.
"…good," she said under her breath.
The creature attacked again.
This time, Aira didn't try to move away.
She stepped forward.
Reached out.
The claw tore into her side, drawing blood instantly. Pain flared, sharp enough to steal her breath.
And then—
the Devour responded.
The magic flooding into her body was overwhelming. It wasn't clean or controlled like before. It was chaotic, violent, almost unstable.
Her vision blurred.
"…too much…"
"Take it."
The voice was louder now.
Clear.
Commanding.
It didn't feel like a suggestion anymore.
The creature let out a distorted roar as its body began to shift. The energy within it destabilized, pulled inward instead of exploding outward.
Toward her.
Aira's body trembled as the power poured in.
Her muscles tightened. Her bones felt like they were being forced to adapt in real time. Her senses stretched beyond what she could handle.
She could feel everything.
The students behind her.
The residue of magic in the air.
The pulse of something deeper in the forest.
It was too much.
And still not enough.
She moved before she fully realized it.
Faster than before.
Stronger.
Her hand closed around the creature's arm.
She pulled.
The limb didn't tear the way flesh should. It broke apart like unstable magic, dissolving as it was consumed.
Gasps echoed behind her.
"She's… eating it—"
"That's not normal…"
"That's not even magic…"
Aira didn't stop.
She couldn't.
The hunger had taken control.
Every movement was sharper, more aggressive. Each strike devoured more of the creature, breaking it down piece by piece.
For the first time, the monster reacted.
Not with rage.
With resistance.
Its core flared violently, the energy inside it becoming unstable.
Ren's expression changed instantly.
"…it's going to explode."
Aira didn't back away.
She stepped closer.
The core detonated.
But instead of releasing outward—
it collapsed.
Straight into her.
The light vanished in an instant.
The creature was gone.
Completely.
Silence followed.
Not the kind from before.
This one felt heavier.
Aira stood alone at the center of it, her body trembling slightly. The air around her warped, bending just enough to feel wrong, like reality itself was struggling to adjust.
No one moved.
No one spoke.
Because now, it wasn't just her power that terrified them.
It was her.
Her breathing grew uneven as she turned her head slowly.
Toward the students.
Toward Ren.
Magic filled the space around her.
Everywhere.
Close.
Reachable.
Her fingers twitched.
"…no…"
Before anything could happen, Ren was in front of her.
Close enough to block her view.
His hand closed firmly around her wrist.
"Look at me."
Her gaze snapped to his.
Sharp blue eyes held steady, cutting through the chaos in her thoughts.
"Focus," he said, his voice lower now. "You're not a monster."
He paused, just for a second.
"…unless you choose to be."
The hunger surged again.
Louder.
Closer.
Telling her to take more.
To take him.
To grow.
Her body leaned forward slightly.
Then stopped.
Her nails dug into her palm.
Pain grounded her.
"...I'm still me."
The words came out strained, but real.
Slowly, the pressure inside her began to ease. The darkness in her vision faded, and her breathing steadied.
The Devour quieted.
For now.
Ren didn't let go immediately.
His grip stayed firm, like he was making sure she was still there.
"…good," he muttered, before finally releasing her.
Far below the forest, hidden deep underground, a figure watched through a glowing screen of magic.
"…subject successful."
"…adaptation rate exceeds expectation."
A brief pause.
"…prepare the next phase."
Back above, Aira stared at her hands.
They were still trembling.
Still glowing faintly.
"…this wasn't random."
Her eyes darkened slightly.
"…someone sent that thing."
For a moment, she thought she was the hunter.
Now she understood.
She had always been part of the hunt.
And whatever was watching her…
wasn't done yet.
